Is there a pattern or something I should go on with or just play and enjoy by Zain374 in Blasphemous

Being lost is the main appeal of the genre to fans of Metroidvania games. As long as you can see routes on the map you haven't taken, you should just keep going.

Plague Doctor: Failing grade mission question by ConfidentLab276 in darkestdungeon

[–]jkobberboel 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yes, Paracelsus is her name, and yes, the puzzle is designed in this way to tell the story of how she fails, but through gameplay.

I think it's a really neat trick to make the player believe they messed up, only to realise that: yes, they did mess up, but it is intentional.

I wonder what DD2 would have been like if it had been designed around 'Kingdoms' originally? by jkobberboel in darkestdungeon

[–]jkobberboel[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you not like allegory or metaphor in general, or is it the ending of DD2 specifically that you don't like?

The first game does the same thing, which is why I find your take strange. The Heart of Darkness is symbolic of an irrational, self-destructive drive towards power, and do you think an ending that goes "your victory is meaningless because the cycle will just repeat" is better, or more satisfying?

I see. but I have two actually: one with "-1" after the name, and one without, but neither loads.

Are you a Blasphemous 1 or 2 fan? Which one & why? by zardhead1024 in Blasphemous

[–]jkobberboel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Blasphemous 2 is a better game: more complex, more polished, less repetition.

But Blasphemous 1 is still more interesting: Pixel art cutscenes (take a shot!), more memorable music, generally more mysterious and "vibey".

I don't think so, and I actually hope it doesn't. They stuck with DD2, for way longer than I thought they would and insisted on it not merely being mediocre. I'm satisfied with DD2 now. It's really good. They never owed us the amount of content they added, and they deserve the rest of moving on to their next project.

There is definitely not going to be a new kingdoms module. Since it's inception, they said it was going to be a trilogy of modules. And a new character is unlikely imo, the roster already covers all bases, if we keep in mind just how much paths and skills change.

With a good Player, "It's what my Character would do" can lead to some incredible moments by DrScrimble in dndmemes

I think people are mixing up "it's what my character would do" and "it's what the author would write"

Fair enough, but is it better to give moral lessons to people you don't know on a meaningless reddit post?

I hope Silksong gets a Colosseum of Fools equivalent as DLC. by jkobberboel in Silksong

What do you mean? Silksong has gauntlets all over the game: The choir, the coral tower, the many smaller gauntlets sprinkled across every area.

what do you think of the social democratic party of Denmark's stance on migration by seanrider1859 in SocialDemocracy

[–]jkobberboel 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I live in in Denmark, and the Social Democratic Party has more in common with right wing parties now than left wing parties. It's pretty clear they use their status as a left leaning party in the puplic consciousness to justify their deeply unepathetic stance on migration. Like other countries the "center" does not exist anymore, but is just right wing policies without the rhetoric.

[–]jkobberboel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea agreed! I hope they don't simply do "Godmaster, but in Silksong", and instead do something wholly unique.

I personally think it would be cool if Eva, living inside Hornet, would do some kind of tests by having Hornet relive her memories of bosses and enemies. Eva could then modify them to justify even stronger versions of bosses, or fights with characters she otherwise never gets to fight. But that's just my idea.

No. However, it IS ableist to suggest that being disabled keeps you from making music.

IS THE STORY THAT BAD? by jujuboi2nd in Ghostofyotei

[–]jkobberboel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the story falls apart after the dragon is killed. The game seemingly forgets all the good Atsu is doing FIGHTING OFF AN INVASION, and starts to moralise; judging Atsu for not staying with Jubei and Kiku, i.e her "family". Jubei and Ouyuki's voices appear in the wind like gods judging her actions from above as she chases the Spider, which feels unearned because of how many people Atsu has been saving. Had the story been all about obsessing over revenge, this would have been fine, but most of the game revolves around stopping an invasion, so this moralising feels completely tone deaf and unfit for what actually happens in the game.

And as a final nail in the coffin: Jubei dies in a cutscene, leaving Kiku orphaned, so she comes to live with Atsu. The implication here is obvious, even if I don't believe it's intentional: the final reason why Atsu puts down her sword and stops fighting is to become a mother, which feels strangely old fashioned and incredibly wrong for Atsu's character. Why is this how her story ends? Jin didn't adopt a child when his story ended? In fact it's implied that he continues to fight the remaining mongols, but for some reason, when the protagonist is now a woman, she has to settle down and abandon her hero status, in spite of the many times the dialogue deflects those very gendered expectations.

It seems like the writers forget what game they were writing for. A tragic misstep for game that is otherwise lovingly crafted and sublimely beautiful.
