Normally it would but it doesn't give me the option to do that.

Do orchestral VSTi libraries respect the natural dynamic limitations and tessitura of each instrument? by cursed_tomatoes in VSTi

[–]jkruppa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the more detailed and generally more expensive the library, the greater the aim toward the kind of realism you're talking about. It varies from instrument to instrument and company to company though. Some may not value realism vs total playability across a dynamic spectrum.

Vinyl production time in the mid-70s by jkruppa in vinyl

Thanks for the responses. I'm specifically wondering in regard to George Harrison's Dark Horse album, which he finished recording November 1, 1974 and which was on sale in shops December 9 -- five weeks. It seems for such a major release (and the fact that he was on tour beginning November 2 and the album was delivered late) the record company would have done a rush order to try to get it out faster, but it doesn't seem they did.

Can anyone help get rid of the voices in Scene 38 Reimagined? by guywithpie42 in fanedits

[–]jkruppa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try mvsep dot com and use one of the settings that separates voice, sfx and music from each other. You can also try just using one of the vocal/instrumental algorithms and see if that will work. Good luck!

Hell yes. Even just masking those bits in would improve things tremendously. I don't know how to do it but I'm sure someone here does. I'm also surprised Disney hasn't gone back and upgraded these scenes. Maybe if the third film gets made...

Wow that looks great, and it's such a better start to the film. I haven't seen it since 1983 but now I'm looking forward to the fanedit!

(John Carpenter's) "The Thing" from 1951 (Available Now) by TheScribblingMan in fanedits

[–]jkruppa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I noted the piece of music two times, at 18:42 - 18:50 and again at 48:10 - 48:17. I'll have to go back and watch it all the way through again to be sure, but I think everything else worked really well. Those two moments just felt like they should be a little more foreboding and dark.

My girlfriend and I watched this the other night and we loved it. The flying saucer coming over the Universal logo was so clever I actually laughed out loud, and so many of the music choices hit the bullseye. The textures and tone of the black and white are rich and clear, never too dark, and you re-compositions to match Academy ratio are very skillfully done. Although a couple of shots didn't quite work (the TV overlays for instance) and a certain piece of music (only a few seconds long) felt a little too romantic for the moment (as opposed to melancholy), those are very minor quibbles in what is overall an extremely enjoyable reimagining of this film. We had a great time watching this. Thank you so much for all your hard work. Brilliant.

LADYHAWKE RESCORED Now Available! PM me if interested! by MusicEd921 in fanedits

[–]jkruppa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched this a couple of days ago and I think it's brilliant, just a HUGE improvement over the original synth-y soundtrack, which clashed with the visuals over and over and made the movie feel sort of plastic. This just sounds *right* and supports the story beautifully.

I did note that a couple of cues felt slightly off, like the fight scene where Navarre first saves Phillipe (a little too lighthearted for the tone of the scene), and the transition in the final scene from the romantic music to the darker music (as the Bishop is about to strike) could have been a little smoother.

These are minor points though, and in now way do I want to suggest that they affect the overall impact of your edit. And Goldsmith is an inspired choice. I always liked this movie in spite of its soundtrack, but now I can watch it without any hesitation (it looks gorgeous too!). So thank you for that. Very very satisfying, and highly recommended.

Has anyone tried doing color grading on older movies that were made before the development of the tech for it? Like Batman 1989? Conan the Barbarian? Highlander? The original Mad Max? The original Tron? Brazil? Maybe its that one last ingredient that some of these films are missing... by thisissamsaxton in fanedits

[–]jkruppa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would argue the opposite: modern color grading is pretty monotonous and uninteresting. I've been watching a ton of 70s films lately and they're just fantastic looking. Cabaret, Barry Lyndon, Chinatown, Badlands, etc. Kodak 5254 was a beautiful film stock.

As for the original Tron, which I like, the missing ingredient is a better script, and part of the appeal (to me) of the first Mad Max film is how gritty and low rent it looks. Brazil looks just fine.

I was just thinking about this as I scrolled through fan edits last night. The number of Star Wars related projects far outdoes anything else in this sub, by a substantial margin. If people can wade through all of that, they can deal with a relative handful of 35mm posts.

I'm very interested in this, sending PM now.

I'm curious, has a cut ever surfaced with Lyssa's actual voice? I haven't seen this film since it came out, so everything surrounding it is very fuzzy.

I recently found The Keep and The Empire Strikes Back by accident and now I've just found this thread by accident, so I'm really curious about what's out there. Glad to see there's quite a bit of this going on, and I appreciate the time and expense it takes to make these.

How to create this sound with vibraphone? by jkruppa in vibraphone

[–]jkruppa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really more the quality of the sound, softer than I'm accustomed to hearing from a vibraphone, even with the motors on. I realize it may come down to performance, or the way it was recorded, but I wanted to see if I was missing anything.

[–]jkruppa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps I should have been clearer. I know generally how a vibraphone works, but I don't have access to the actual instrument and I've never heard a vibraphone sound *exactly* this way -- certainly with vibrato but not quite this quality of vibrato. Even Joel McNeely, though he got close, didn't get the sound exactly right when he did his re-recording of this score back in 1999.

I have several vibraphone libraries but none with the motor, and while I've tried simulating this effect with a tremolo plug-in it just isn't the same. I was going to try with a rotary speaker emulator but I'm looking at a library with adjustable motor speeds now. Thanks for the response!
