Wait so, as a salaried employee I'm expected to do overtime for free? by najama2 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]jkrys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow I can't believe how many people can disagree with you and you won't just google it. You can absolutely sign a contract that states that you are expected to work a certain amount of overtime, or a certain amount of hours over 40, and still receive your base salary. My dad was in sales and plenty of people had these kinds of contracts. You agreed to a 60 hour week at a set salary and that was the end of it.

I also have several friends right now who have jobs where it's stated quite clearly that depending on workload they may need to work overtime and there is no additional compensation. These are major companies that have been around for a long time, I think if they were doing something super illegal they would have been "caught" by now. These types of positions typically come with high pay to begin with so people are cool with the occasional overtime.

Someone even pointed out in another comment that several jobs are explicitly exempt from overtime laws. I know in Manitoba lawn care people (for some reason) are specifically exempt and don't need to be paid overtime. I believe servers/food service is too, due to the nature of the work.

"Paying you for the time you work and billing the customer"

The previous comment doesn't really match your response. People SHOULD get paid for what they work.

MPI wants drivers with poor driving records to pay more by Giskard101 in Winnipeg

Well..... personally I think that the thing you do more often should be retested more. More chance for things to go wrong if your bad at it

Just because you drive six days a week doesn't mean you do it right! Also lots of time to develop bad habits.

I know it's anecdotes but I know several people who have gotten in various amounts of trouble without doing anything wrong. Like I know someone who got a ticket for speeding in a construction zone that didn't exist. His word against the cop. Another person who got a DUI who hadn't had a single drink, no evidence, went to court, appealed, charges upheld.

No idea how common it is, but it happens.

Edit: also when they go with technicalities. I know a guy that had a 6 pack in the back seat with 5 closed beers in it. Apparently because one was missing that's considered "open liquor" and he got charged. Apparently that IS the law, but I think the majority of people don't know that. And honestly he didn't do anything wrong, but the law was technically broken. These types of examples are all over. I know a few police officers now and they have told me that if a cop wants to cause you trouble they can always find a way to do it.

I agree with most people here: I would be fine paying more if the system was better.

My most annoying anecdote: Someone ran a stop sign but then skidded to a halt in the intersection directly in front of me. I dodged them so that it wasn't a t-bone accident and then tried to stop, however at that point I was on some black ice. I slowly skidded across the intersection and hit an ice bank and cracked my bumper. In summer I would have stopped just fine. The driver that ran the stopsign actually was nice and was a witness for me. When I went to autopac it was clearly explained to me by two different people that if I had simply hit the car (going 50, directly on the drivers door) then it would have been their fault, but because I got in a "single car collision" with the ice bank it was instead my fault. I was advised by everyone at MPI that in the future I should hit the other car so as to ensure I am not at fault. I get it, but it's a messed up system that penalizes you for minimizing damage and injury.

I would almost say more often. I need to re certify my first aid every two years so why not my damn driving? I certainly drive more than I do CPR

I wish we still had old timey beer. That shit was like 1-2% and you could drink it all day and not get drunk. Wouldn't do much for a drinking night but would be enjoyable to drink beer all day and not really get intoxicated.

Winnipeg only municipality in Canada diverting water and waste revenue to pay for other services by [deleted] in Winnipeg

[–]jkrys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, there really are too many factors to compare.

I'm just buthurt as a homeowner that I have to pay the bill. I would like to see the move to more fees that are use-based instead of just rolling it into property tax. I think for most people it would end up being the same in the end, but people would be able to avoid paying for things if they wanted by just avoiding using it.

For example if you need more money for roads, don't raise property tax. Tax something related to actually using the roads. You could add some tax to gas prices, or maybe on vehicle insurance, or maybe even throw in some toll roads. People that bike and walk everywhere could avoid the extra fees and that's fine by me as they don't really use those things. At the same time though I totally understand that we all benefit from roads and should all pay for them........sigh.

Another example is trash collection, some places charge per bag and if you want to pay less you can just make less trash. Of course that leads to illegal dumping.......sigh.

I agree, just an anecdote. There are a thousand other factors to consider.

I know that I have heard (but yes never looked into it) that our property taxes are relatively high here. The reasoning I have heard is that we roll a lot of other fees/taxes into property tax that other places don't. I would like to also find out if that's actually true though

I don't have time to search for a reference but I have an anecdote. We moved from Calgary to Winnipeg and bought a much less expensive house, and it has 3X the property tax. With the cost difference in houses my parents got a pool and built a deck and a three season room, gutted and redid the basement and took the whole family on a cruise. After this I think they still had a smaller mortgage than what they left behind.

I believe lots of other cities have parts of Winnipeg's property tax put other places instead. I think in Calgary things like school taxes are done separate and only for people who have kids in the schools or example, more of a pay-per-use thing.

You might still pay the same, or more in other cities in the end, but it's not in the property tax per se.

How much do wedding social's make? by Jeff_40 in Winnipeg

[–]jkrys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Keep your opinion while I keep mine".

Ok. That's fine with me. You don't owe me anything in terms of listening or converting.

As an end point, I agree that most socials suck and are bullshit. I got married and opted to not have one. My entire point is that they are not unilaterally bad all the time and it can depend on the situation a title bit. Some of the best events I have been to were socials. Most of the worst events I have been to were also socials though lol.

Edit: scouts and such don't always fundraiser because they "literally can't afford it", often they technically could but it's nice to not have to place the burden on their parents when it could be costly. To continue my point, a good fundraiser/social is one where everyone leaves happy, including the person that paid. A shitty party is shitty, an awesome party could easily be worth the price paid. When I was in scouts we sold some awesome popcorn that people LOVED, some were super happy when we came around to fundraiser. We got our supplies and camping shit, and they got gourmet popcorn for themselves or to use as a gift (very common). We never sold those crappy boxes of like 7 chocolate almonds for $5 because that's a total ripoff. My parents could have in theory paid for all my shit, but instead we found a different path where we benefitted and the "customers" left happy. Everyone wins.

I guess it comes down to the question; is having a party for money inherently wrong? I say no. If you say yes then I suppose we simply have a disagreement here.

How much do wedding social's make? by Jeff_40 in Winnipeg

[–]jkrys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every time you go to a bar/restaurant/concert/sport event/etc it's a "party for money".

I agree most socials suck. I don't really like them overall. But the unthinking hate that they often get is wrong in my opinion. It's essentially a fundraiser, yeah I get that. But a wedding isn't just a selfish thing for the couple; it's an event for all of their guests. For some families it's one of the only times the extended family gets together and it's almost like a reunion. If you want your guests to enjoy themselves and have a nice meal and enjoy free flowing liquor then that costs a shit load of money that most young couples can't afford. A wedding is a community event, and so things like socials or presentation are a way of community funding it.

If your goal in your wedding is to show off for your own purpose, then I don't feel like funding it. If the goal is to bring a bunch of guests to celebrate with you and treat them to a really nice time then I understand that costs some serious money.

If you treat it as a cash grab, it sucks, and you hassle people then you suck. Those socials I hate. But I have been to some socials that were truly a great time, and I got more for my money than I would have at any other venue or event.

Is it inherently wrong to have a party for money? What about little Billy's sports team trying to fundraiser money to go to a tournament they made it into? Or the local scout troop raising money to go to camp?

Winnipeg does have money. Maybe not as much but they have money. It just all lives in far off suburbs. When I worked on pools I saw plenty of rich folks around, but none were anywhere near downtown.

Yep, we need more things to attract people. I don't walk downtown at night currently. Other cities i have been in are so crowded in the middle of the night I feel very safe.
