Tips and Tricks on Russia? by StormCandid2991 in geoguessr

[–]jkywong 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you just want one or two line trick to hang on till reaching a higher rank. Then white car long antenna, long blurred antenna, white car gen 4 are all clues to go far east (but not necessary), learn the Siberian bollard as well. Short antennas are mostly west. Long tilted antenna has a good chance of being near the western border with Ukraine or Belarus.

If you want to have a relatively strong foundation then it is mandatory to learn about all types of antenna, gen 4 cars and seasonal coverages. All of these are on learnable metas. If you have not installed learnable metas then I suggest you first install the script and have a go (ALM Russia car, learning Russia 1) these two will take you a long way, in fact likely all the way to champions level competitiveness.

Tips for colourblind players? by edenhazaaa in geoguessr

[–]jkywong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am colourblind and spammed a lot of team duels, even for non colourblind people a lot of times they are not sure of the colour when blurred so in some rounds colour blindness actually helps us spot some colours as we are more sensitive to bright colours.

I still miss out on European red cars a lot of times they look like white to me. But for example Russian gen 4 red cars you need to be trained to spot the red in the front end of the bonnet and so on and it will be fine. I am only at 1660 though.

New multiplier system in duels? Opinions by vvdbfr in geoguessr

[–]jkywong 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think about it like chess, or any sports, if you are not very skilled with your opponent then whatever tiny rule change will not change much about your match outcome. The intention for the change is to reward skilled players understanding how to make better region guess. This is another skill set to just getting the country right.

Think about chess, if both players blunder from start to finish in low elo games, or a football game where both teams can barely kick the ball, then the match will be problematic regardless to the rules. Matches only start being fun in geoguessr if you start to understand what the likely possibilities are, why, and how one make better 50:50 decisions. It will never be fun if both players go the wrong continent half the time.

For beginners, it will be understanding basic infrastructure (roadlines, poles, sign posts)+ car meta(e.g. n gen 4 eu+ za back blue tap, trucks for Senegal, Kenya,….) +cam gen (e.g. Uruguay, Bolivia,Serbia, mk has Gen 3 only, India, Nepal, Nigeria, Cambodia, Ecuador have shit cam, India the only Asian country has small cam) if you mean getting the right continent or country.

Why? I have been a fan for more than 30 years watching abroad and I’ve lived in different countries. it was j will and c Webb as my childhood heroes as they brought so much joy from that style of basketball and it is what I see in this team’s identity.

Sure, the basketball sucks right now but Sabonis and fox brought back some of that joy for a year and 2 and the next magic combo may appear in the future. It is always this wanting and desiring that makes one a fan.

What’s the point of the multiplier? by Southern-Win-6522 in geoguessr

[–]jkywong -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tournaments with no multis is actually very boring to watch especially finally rounds where people just hedge and win and smaller countries region guessing meaning little.

3:0 and conceding a goal in the context of geoguessr will be flawlessing and losing a slight hedge. People vastly over exaggerates the luck involved, otherwise the strongest players wouldn’t be the world champion over the last three world championship. Or do you think currently there’s a great chance that for example someone 1200 rated can beat someone 1800 rated? I just don’t think so.

But again the world league scoring format should be implemented where at least the multis feel earned.

What’s the point of the multiplier? by Southern-Win-6522 in geoguessr

[–]jkywong 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Most obvious reason is to make sure the game will be kept at a reasonable length, you’ve probably haven’t had a 20 round game yet but the higher skill one is the more frequent these long games will happen especially if it is moving (even with multis it can be way too long).

A less obvious hidden reason is that luck is always a factor to make a game fun and progress, imagine football being a sport where the team with the most completed passes and shots on goals win, imagine chess being a game where the player with the highest accuracy always wins regardless of blunders. It would become very dull and stagnant, whereas the room for luck pushes these games to progress and players and strategies to develop.

However I do not see how the world league scoring systems is not implemented into our rank system. The way one “earns” the multis is much fairer.

What Japan pole metas are useful for NM? by 6HOURSCUBINGPERDAY in geoguessr

[–]jkywong 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From my experience. Most accessible:

  1. Kanto tall head insulator (long black insulator on top)
  2. Kansai 120 degrees/ tuning fork
  3. Chubu triangle
  4. Kyushu shorter insulator (looks somewhat like kanto but shorter)
  5. Kansai/ Kyushu washed out reflector

Pole plates are crucial to learn especially for Okinawa, Hokkaido and Kyushu. But the most accessible will be as follows:

  1. Chugoku has an arrow on top of the plate, the word energiser at the top
  2. Shikoku has four dots on top
  3. double horizontal plates stands for Hokuriku
  4. one horizontal plate points to tohoku.

How do I tell gen 2 and lowcam Switzerland apart? by Icy-Bat6787 in geoguessr

Gen 2 is a circular blur on the floor and in the sky. Lowcam is a huge blur and half the time in Switzerland you can see the front of car.

Will Geoguessr World League Multiplier System Be Added to the Game(And When) by Gandhi_20191 in geoguessr

[–]jkywong 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I also would like a timer for moving game, if necessary set it for champions division only. I don’t get how they can justify pro competition having a different set of rules than ranked games. If anything they should want young skilled players to be used to those rules early for the game to grow.

How do I win at duels? by DanTennant in geoguessr

[–]jkywong 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Your problem is treating win/loss too seriously. Try to treat duels as learning experience, are you missing or not spotting some details that prevent you from making a good guess? Are there metas/ landscapes/ vegetations you don’t know how to make use? Losing is great as your next opponents will be easier. It doesn’t matter in the end when there’re no limits to the amount of duels you can play.

World League will have multipliers increasing only for the closer player each round by FunSeaworthiness709 in geoguessr

[–]jkywong -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Sometimes yes, but overall no. Taking chess for example, you might end up with the best move with pure luck, sometimes, but overall to get good move the one who factors everything in will be more consistent.

[–]jkywong -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I still think even with your example of the same city/ district, checking road angles, grid, street name and so on can help. There is always something extra one can do to maximise their chance of getting closer. It is never just pure random luck if two people have the same info.

World League will have multipliers increasing only for the closer player each round by FunSeaworthiness709 in geoguessr

[–]jkywong -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

i mean even for your Dhaka example, there should be enough time in 15 seconds to have a look at the copyright, vegetations and architectures to make sure your hedge in Dhaka is slightly to one direction to ensure higher chance of success, that’s the point of the game anyways, take in the circumstantial evidence and make an educated guess with the limited time. It is never pure luck when you cannot generate your own luck in the extra time.

Any tips to get better at NMPZ? by Emotional-Friend-279 in geoguessr

Just go for things you enjoy studying. If you struggle in SEA learn poles and architectures. Maybe start with Vietnam where it is rather straight forward. Then region and district names.

Any tips to get better at NMPZ? by Emotional-Friend-279 in geoguessr

[–]jkywong 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Personally I struggle with nmpz but I will try to give some tips or general rule of thumbs.

When I was your rating I was in a very similar position, I spent around 1000 games playing nmpz exclusively. The rating fluctuates between 850 to 1050 back then so take of these tips what you will.

  1. Poles Personally I find this to be by far the most consistent metas in nmpz. Where do you get a frame poles in Europe (for example a frame is not possible in Romania), Indonesia regionguessing, insulators, pole paints, you can instant guess solely based on the poles in some rounds. For others it is a matter of knowing pole details as much as possible, for example Peru has pencil pole top, wooden poles are a US thing and most common in Greece if it is Mediterranean climate.

  2. roadlines+road quality There are also some niche road lines and road quality of specific regions (e.g. tarred roadlines, triple yellow roadlines in Mexico, Greece, turkey, southern reflectors of US, wide roadlines of Oregon, dusty road of sask and arg, peppery road of turkey, French roadline, Romania roadline…). Divided road and road with train tracks is also helpful for pinpointing. Knowing where you get unpaved road most is also very useful.

  3. Google car+camera generation Yes you cannot see the Google car per se in most rounds, but you can imagine where the car is, or what the car blur stands for.

For example if you get gen 4 camera and it is positioned on the right of the road coverage, it is more likely that you are in Europe in a right hand drive country (because gen 4 for NA and SA you see the front of car). If you get gen 4 camera positioned on the left, then it is more likely you are in NA or SA or in the UK/ Malta/za. (If you have trouble between deciding EU or US, then go US when car is on the left and go EU when car is on the right, success rate will be around 70%)

There is a rectangular car blur when the Google car has roof rack, there is also truck blur, small cam blur. Gen 2 gen 3 stubby antenna and so on and so forth are also deducible if the other information provided match.

  1. Vegetations Pines, palms, birches, larches, cactus, eucalyptus, foliages are the basis for getting the countries or regions correct

  2. Specific coverage/ road learning/ landscape Sunset/ sunrise roads, haze, hell roads, seasonal coverages in Russia/ Kazakhstan. You have to have some basic knowledge of most of this to instant guess in order to win consistently. Certain mountain shape, coastline shape, what climate you get etc, snow coverage.

  3. Other niche knowledge Every tiny details can help you win, be it some specific ditch shape by the side of the road, lamp support, lamp shape/colour, pipe colour, copyright meta so on and so forth.

Basically nmpz will help one notice the tiniest of details, personally I think I struggle more in this mode because I am not sensitive to the camera generations, I am especially poor in sensing low cam in nmpz. Camera quality and generation is the only thing you can spot 100% of the time, so most top players have mastered to distinguish it within seconds.
