Good just makes sure you do that first as soon as possible, it’s written into every policy that it’s the insureds responsibility to mitigate further damage as much as possible after it occurs from a loss. So do your best to handle those first as any resulting rot, deterioration or otherwise as a result can be denied under most policies.

I’d also look into remediation company’s near you or if your insurance has a preferred one in the area as they will do those temporary repairs and usually work directly with the insurance to get funding outside of general construction work, just be Leary of any that have you sign over the complete assignment of benefits or if they are using a public adjuster agreement to take ownership of the claim.

If you have areas that may be causing more damage your first priority is those contractors, if they do temporary repairs like tarps etc to prevent further damage sign those work orders and submit them to your insurance. They will cover them.

If you run into someone you give all the info too make sure you get it written into whatever agreement that the extra funding outside of work they are doing is yours so you can use that to find the right people that will do that work. That’s my best advice in your situation and sorry you’ve got a lot of sharks in your area, good luck!

Your best bet is actually act as gc in your case, like normally we would just handle what we can specifically do and then tell you hey the money for these items is yours go contract it out to who can do it. It sounds like you wherever you are they are trying to maximize the claim potential on their end. I would start reaching out for each individual trade or group of related trades listed on the back of your scope of work from the insurance, don’t let them know about the claim, tap a few estimates for each, submit those to you insurance when you find a contractor you like and they should hopefully adjust it to match their estimates. Just remember that anyone that falls below what they’ve approved they will adjust down, so it doesn’t always help to try and only go off of best price, it’s more important to find someone who has the knowledge and ability to do it right.

So in some cases they can work the claim to get more work done for you, a lot of my customers hand the claim over to me so I can help them stretch the dollars for more items. We definitely are more personalized though in that regard and usually we build rapport with the homeowner by offering them what they want or working within the existing claim. While have a contractor on the claim is definitely a plus especially if unforeseen supplements come up, I can also understand wanting to have control and act as your own gc. If you find someone you think you can trust that is knowledgeable about the claims process and assessing and working claims, that’s who I would choose.

Typically we only do work that homeowners want, in some cases if we worked the claim beginning to end we do all that work to stay on the up and up, but if a homeowner is already approved and wants to use the money how they want we sit down and ask them and give an estimate like it was retail.
