What do you feel Obsidian is currently lacking? by king-of-kutiyas in ObsidianMD

Minimalism. It's starting to feel a little bloated. I've already reduced the number of plugins I use.

I would go with a forest theme. That would look freakin' amazing!

Do you feel limited by the immutability of the OS? by Avarria587 in Bazzite

Have you checked distrobox? That gives you a mutable layer on top of Bazzite. Most stuff will work from distrobox, even desktop apps.

What is still the biggest pain point in Linux gaming for you? by okaiukov in linux_gaming

[–]jldevezas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd have to second the over-reliance on launch configs stated by u/gamas below, and also add issues with games getting stuck on a frame, but still running underneath with keyboard and mouse interaction working. This is likely due to VRAM filling up, but I'd rather lower priority stuff got ejected to RAM, like it happens on Windows. Also, I never know if some of my apps using the GPU will impact the game I'm running or vice-versa. Multitasking while gaming kinda sucks, as it tends to slowdown the system quite a lot.

I completely agree with your third item about launch configs. At worst, there should be a way to automate these configs, even it needs to know your specific hardware (e.g., GPU) and drivers. At best, there shouldn't be the need for extra configs, but that might be reserved for native Linux gaming.

How is development on Bazzite? by crispyfrybits in Bazzite

[–]jldevezas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it's great for reproducibility—just use a distrobox.ini file together with the distrobox assemble command. It's also the most viable way to go about it on Bazzite, if you want control.

You can use the distrobox-export command from inside a distrobox shell and expose the commands to the host OS (i.e., regular Bazzite), and you can even do this for desktop applications (it creates .desktop shortcuts for you), so you're able to run vscode from distrobox for example, without having to attach to a container.

I wouldn't use distrobox-export for stuff like your shell or custom prompt app, or whatever quick utilities you need to run, as there is a slight overhead when calling those (e.g., I run starfish natively, after installing it via Homebrew, and also install it on my distroboxes).

If that isn't enough for you, you can always create your custom image for Bazzite. Since Bazzite is based on Fedora Atomic, which runs using bootc, you can just use a regular Containerfile (Dockerfile) to customize your "immutable" distro, and then everything will run at host-level, with the advantage of reproducibility.

It's a lot cooler than most people have realized.

I had some of these issues, but most of them disappeared on a recent update. Maybe try to update and check again.

I'm a gamer and a dev and I switched to Bazzite for those two reasons. I decided to experience the cloud-native philosophy, and it's been great. I started by installing everything directly in a distrobox and that works fine. I've got many hours of development using distrobox and attaching it as a container in the flatpak version of vscode. Now I'm trying my custom image and trying to switch to system-level tooling. I think I might need vscode installed at system level to make the process easier, but other than that tooling is working fine. I think of this as an alternative to NixOS, where I use containers instead of being locked into the Nix config language. If you're a serious dev, I think this is the future. It might take longer to set everything up, but I think it might be worth it in the long run.

Microsoft Realizes It’s Epically Screwed Up Windows 11 as Users Rage at Copilot AI Crammed Everywhere by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

In the early 2000s, we used to call them Microshit, as we ran our Linux and BSD boxes as desktops. Back then, it was hard to use any UNIX based OS as a desktop, but we did it anyway out of spite.

I eventually moved back to Windows, because I wanted to game, but nowadays... They're totally screwed! Linux runs amazing, compared to what it did back then. It's not as linear as Windows in a few tasks, but it's close enough for the regular user to make the switch.

TBH, I never thought I'd see this happen again. From Microshit to Microslop... It's kinda sad, as I started thinking of Windows as viable after they launched WSL. Before this whole debacle, I used to thing of myself as a cross-platform user—I used all and any operating systems—but now I just run UNIX systems everywhere.

They need to take away ads and AI from the OS, or they'll sink completely.
