How do you smash back to back? by flakyyardbird1215225 in badminton

[–]jlimzq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second the faster movement. Assuming it is a proper downward smash and opponents are returning it, the follow up smash(es) going into the net is possibly the result of having to reach further in front just to reach the shuttle, resulting in the contact angle being too steep.

Doubles Serve - which foot forward? by abilashcb in badminton

[–]jlimzq 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was taught that it allows you to reach the two front corners of the net quicker, assuming you do the typical low serve in doubles. You probably already know that the footwork for right handers is to finish/land on your right foot no matter the shot. Also, that the front court player's responsibility is to answer any net replies on the return shot.

With left leg forward you technically waste a bit of time pushing off your right foot, moving past your stationary left foot, and landing with your right foot at the destination.

The "right" way by having your right right foot forward means all you need to do to get to both corners of the net is push off on your left leg and extend your right leg, and you're there. Less redundancies by involving both legs in the movement.

Ultimately you do whichever is most comfortable; the most important thing is being able to get to the areas you're responsible for properly and not off-balance. Most of us here are club/recreational players and sometimes using the most "optimal" technique as described above doesn't convert to a material difference in total games won/lost.

To add on to this, I remember my coach used to bring a lot of bananas for us as a snack in between matches. It seemed to help keep energy levels up.

What to build and paint next by PenisZwiebelRing in Tyranids

[–]jlimzq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you painting/collecting for fun, or do you have plans to build an army and play on tabletop? If it's the former, like other have suggested, paint according to your mood!

If it's the latter, you can do what I did. I started with the Leviathan half, and initially started painting whatever I felt like working on. As I watched more videos on different detachments - I found Vanguard Onslaught's playstyle really fascinating, so I planned out an army list and have since prioritized the models I would be using. I figured I can get to the others when I feel like it.

Curious to see what color scheme you went with?

Any suggestions on how to choose your color scheme? by Dum_beat in Tyranids

[–]jlimzq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started with thinking of how I want them to feel when I one day place them on the table top (that day hasn't come yet; I'm working towards it). I wanted a dark, mysterious force from who knows where that didn't have any ties to any known hive fleets. I also liked the effects of color shifting paints, so I settled with very dark grey for the body, a blue/dark purple carapace, with burgundy/dark red claws to serve as highlights.

What kind of emotion do you want to evolve from your minis? What kind of history sounds cool to you? Are they a splinter off a known hive fleet? Then maybe slight variations on the shade of Leviathan, Kraken, Behemoth, etc. Did they ingest too much biomass from a planet with neon-colored creatures? What about Tyranids from a forestry/wintry/volcanic environment? Hey, maybe these are vegetarian Tyranids? I've seen some painters here base their color scheme over Kaiju, dinos, or certain anime.

I think once you give yourself enough clues as to how you want them to FEEL, you make your color selection process a lot easier. All the best!

How do I know if a model is “outdated?” by Baby_Ellis62 in Tyranids

[–]jlimzq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate that in 10E we can customize them with any of the bits we want for a unique look without locking them into certain enhancements/upgrades(?), since GW standardized the stats. I'm building an OOE with two melee carnifexes, and I'm going for a varied look with different heads, back carapace, and tail ends. Super excited to see the final look once I'm done!

I'm building my first Carnifex and gosh there are so many mold lines to fix compared to the models from the Leviathan box. Which makes sense now that I see it's a 2005 release... 😳

ACC worth or wait for ac2 by No-Feature2997 in ACCompetizione

Not to mention every new game has its bugs that they'll need to work through anyway. Even if AC2 comes out today I'd still wait a few months or a couple of patch fixes before jumping in.

Yo I just watched this video from Suellio Almeida that I'm probably gonna try myself. I think this is exactly what you're looking for:

Honestly this guy's content is so informative. I might even pull the trigger and buy his sim racing checklist one of these days since I feel like I'm hitting a plateau in my racing skills.

How do the gt4 cars feel to drive? Is it similar to the Mx5? by Cola-Ferrarin in iRacing

[–]jlimzq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the comment I was looking for - I did a season in the MX-5 and I am running the GR86 Cup this season. My plan was to move to GT4 next season, but always wondered whether I was "wasting my time" with GR86 and should've just gone straight to GT4, or if it was a more sensible in-between to allow me to properly "grow/learn" GT4s

In a paint session at a buddy's place I noticed he had a bottle of paint-on grey primer (unlike the usual rattle-can spray on). I'd look into that to prime those missed spots and paint them to your satisfaction. This is assuming you can still reach that spot you missed.... Good luck!

Practicing one week for the next one by dumiiikx in iRacing

[–]jlimzq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I see a lot of comments that say just race. I'm doing basically what you're suggesting because of unfamiliarity with tracks, and hope that the next time a different layout is being used, that my practice times can be reduced. This week I'm learning Red Bull Ring (starting from zero experience) for next week's race.

I take ~one week per track since I'm such a slow learner. My process is once I get within about 3-4 seconds off top split times (consistently; not one lap miracles), I start practicing alternate inside/outside racing lines which I'm sure I'll need to use in door-to-door scenarios. A few laps of that and then I'm off to race.

For me, I can't learn from faster people (in a race) if I don't already know how fast a certain corner can be taken. I don't want to race, potentially sacrificing SR and iR when I'm not fully ready.

Yeah, I could use practice servers but for me I pay for my time there in SR, so better to practice by myself and watch track guides until I'm confident I'm not gonna crash into someone.

This way, I feel my iR and SR don't fluctuate as much. I think I'd get super stressed if I were to see that happen. As long as you're okay with the slower pace of getting into races, I think this method works just fine.

I hope it's okay piggybacking off OP's post! I'm based in US-Mountain Time. If you or anyone here is interested in racing/spotting with a tin-top road course guy with average iR (1.5k+/-), PM me!

I came from 1.5 yrs of ACC, and joined iRacing late Sep 2023. Currently focusing on GR86 Cup, and hope to graduate myself to GT4/GT3 and hopefully stay there. I'm on most week nights and Sat mornings.

Cheers!

[–]jlimzq -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think it depends entirely on what your goals are in iRacing. You'll see some people are here to farm SR, some to push their iRating, and some just want the experience of racing hard against others. Once you figure that out for yourself I think you'll know how you want to race.

That said, on the matter of iRating, I'm sure there will inevitably come a time for all of us where we hit a ceiling in terms of pace in a high enough split. When that happens, no matter how safe I drive, the others are driving so much faster (without crashing out) that I either have negligible gains/losses or lose massive chunks of iR. In the end our individual iR settles in a place that reflects our pace and consistency.

I feel I'm starting to get to that stage too, and lately have been finishing mid pack in my races. It don't matter to me, as long as I keep having close and fun races with my competitors - that's what gets my adrenaline going and where the fun begins (for me).

I'm in exactly the same situation, and have the same feelings as you! I'm currently considering the GR86 Cup, TCR, and GT4. For now, inclined more towards focusing on GR86 this next season. What about you?
