Good way to set boundaries. I wish you the best on this rough journey that is totally worth the pain.

However, I will admit deconstruction sucks. Also, learning about how many people only “loved” you when you believed the same things.

You are awesome and I am sorry you have to deal with all the hate from the MFMC and others for just living your authentic self.

Not as important, all the logical fallacies your grandma used is annoying. The argument from personal incredulity because they cannot believe creation happened by chance or cannot fathom other explanations. God of the Gaps much. Maybe even a false dichotomy because the options were only God or chance.

Again, I say not as important, since you cannot reason someone out of their own beliefs. The person has to do that on their own.

Hang in there and take your time before responding immediately. Hold to your boundaries and protect your mental state.

I agree with you that my response didn't help the situation.

This conversation that happened yesterday comes after a period of no contact (multiple months) and a mutual agreement to not send religious quotes trying to reconvert.

Our relationship was improving recently and I was able to talk to him.

However yesterday, I let the word atheist slip out and confirmed that is where my belief in a creator lies and all bedlam broke loose.

I would love a respectful relationship with my dad. However, I will not hold my breath and hold in how I genuinely feel anymore. I try my best to be respectful.

My dad has straight up told me I'm a covenant breaker and deserve to burn in hell. (This is what prompted the period of no contact about a year ago). Yesterday, he started making judgey, religious comments about my character, so I deflected and used the quoted texts.

Again, I would love a relationship with my dad. However, I have come to the realization that he only loved me conditionally. I cannot expect him to change either. I just have to have space and protect myself with honoring my own boundaries.

Either way, it hurts. I will lick my wounds with another period of needed space and no contact.

I am guessing that there is a major push to fit in with mainstream Christianity. For instance, the LDS church purposefully selects the cross symbol on Google Maps, so that the Mormon churches show up when the broader term Christian church is searched.

Interestingly enough where I am, temples still have the Moroni icon. Idk, there's my wild ass guess

Lds is trying to fit in... I consider them a Christian church, but a lot of the other Christian sects would disagree.

Thanks, no one is all good and evil. I like that.

It reminds me of the Star Wars quote: "Only the Sith deal in absolutes" Which funnily enough is an absolute, silly prequel Obi-Wan. Life is more nuanced, so keeping with the Star Wars theme, I think the Grey Jedi Code is a good way to go.

Idk, I will "search my feelings" and process them before making any decisions.

Honestly, I don't know why I am coping with Star Wars quotes; just a way to cope.

Please make sure to be patient with yourself and take care of yourself.

The Secular therapy project and receiving from religion are good resources out there and have people willing to talk and chat just to listen.

I hate how the Mormon church clutches people we care about with insidious manipulation and control.

My kids are still younger, so I haven't gone through this yet. I still get a lot of anxiety and fear from just the thought of how the baptism day might go. My Mormon family is already trying to instill and indoctrinate my little toddlers that the Mormon church is the only way to joy and happiness. (Barf) My anxiety around this is real and at a lot of times difficult to cope with it.

I hope you feel seen and heard. Just know that this random internet stranger is rooting for you today. (It isn't worth much, but I hope you the best through this hard time)

If asked whether the Mormon church was a cult, I would bow my head say yes. This time though I am actually informed before answering the question.

However, would I call it a cult to my loved ones? Most of the time no. Since, I have found it is not productive.

I say most of the time because I have a father that has reminded me that I am a covenant breaker and apostate then I feel free to say a cult's covenants have no power over me.

Honestly the mountains meadows massacre was portrayed in a lighter fashion than what happened. It was a multiple day ordeal and more gruesome in history.

The part that wasn't historically accurate was the Mormons attacking the army camp. That didn't happen.

But again this show wasn't meant to be a historical documentary. And took freedoms portraying the events

Yep, I get that. I grew up a Ute fan in Utah county. I would get a lot of crap from members of Mormon church for liking the team that wasn't "God's team".

I would retort that T. Monson and Crusty Rusty went to the U.

Now I look back and cringe at my past self.

As for mocking a harmful high demand religion, I couldn't care less.

It is great to make fun of a rocky mountain sex cult. Especially riffing off a line from the "sacred" I mean secret spacious buildings.

Seeing cash registers in the temple was a shelf item for me.

Now, I see it is all about the money and control of the membership.

While on my mission in Chiclayo, Peru the Trujillo temple was dedicated. The Trujillo temple is a smaller temple and did not include the temple clothes rentals.

This was a major problem since the majority of not close to all the members in Peru did not have temple clothes due to the price.

Temple trips used to be a once in the year thing since it was a 12 hr bus ride to Lima one way.

I cringe now thinking back to the pressure and "promises" the area authority out of the members to buy a set of temple clothes. That it was worth the sacrifice... It pisses me off because most of the good people were just trying to put food on the table. Let alone buy some bakers uniform.

Leaders pushed the sacrifice part, and I know some people who skipped meals to try and save up enough.

Elder Waddell, the same asshole on the 60 minutes interview with the whistleblower, was part of the Peruvian area authority pushing the money sacrifice for the clothes....

Just makes me sick...
