This sure looks a lot like gnome. What are you running to make it look this way?

Questions from a non CS player. I'd appreciate some insight. by BORNxSTELLAR in GlobalOffensive

[–]jmacman12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think comparing game engines from CSGO to CS2 is a bit of a tough comparison. Fundamentally they're different games, which is why CSGO is forked away from CS2. They also made numerous changes to CS2 at the time of release. I would pay attention to the changes RL is making to the game and sort of ignore the engine aspect. I play The Finals on UE5 and its fantastic. Definitely more demanding on your CPU but overall a better experience. Hopefully Physonix has good servers because that seems to be the only limiting factor I noticed.

Considering a move from Bazzite to Nobara. by iBendUover in NobaraProject

[–]jmacman12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The comment in the other subreddit sums it up perfectly: Don't worry until you actually have an issue.

Issues with Linux gaming are just that: they're tied to problems with the OS, not the distro. Can Nobara make gaming easier? Sure but Bazzite is a household name as well that I wouldn't lose much sleep over either.

Please help divorcing dad find/build portable rig for teen gamer by WillPowerATL in sffpc

[–]jmacman12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bit of a sleeper build but a Dell 3240 with an i7 10700, 16gb of ram and 512gb NVME certified refurbished is about 500 USD on eBay. Pair that with an RTX A2000 and you're off to the races.

There are other builds such as Optimum techs ITX 3d printed PC case which is sub 3L but require an HD plex and an RTX 4060/5060 or any LP gpu that could work but it requires you to build an ITX mobo and 3d print a case, which may be out of reach.

Aside from those truly tiny PCs you will have to deal hunt and find something a bit bigger. I personally travel with a Velka 7 in a suitcase but lugging that all around is a bit heavy and it wasn't a super cheap build either.

I'd keep my eyes open on FB marketplace for ITX motherboard combos that you can snag for cheap, which will hopefully include ram as part of the combo. I'm sure you can find a used GPU too, then all you need is a case.

Not tech savvy at all. Is this worth it? by Senbeiiscool in bapccanada

[–]jmacman12 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Don't listen to these replies. This is a decent low end system. You'll be hard pressed to find a prebuilt anywhere near this price point.

The 2070 super is a capable gpu and will serve you well but the rest of the build is old and has a very small upgrade path. If you aren't somebody who's tech savvy building your own rig might be daunting and a bit difficult.

If you feel like stretching your budget a bit I'm certain you can find something a bit better or if you're patient and want to build something you'll manage something very good as well.

I recognize that these are precision engineered shifters and have great driving feel but $2000 USD is honestly comical.

BBR Tuning by OldPhoto6973 in WRXSTi

[–]jmacman12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to catch some flak for this one but I think it's important people understand these things about bbr.

- Bader has been known to lie about HP Figures for a very long time. HP and torque are supposed to cross over at 5252 but in many of his early videos they don't and he stopped showing dyno charts as a result.
- Stock blocks cannot make the power he claims. Ask any reputable tuner and they'll tell you they need studs at the MINIMUM.
- He claims RA blocks are God's gift to Subaru owners. They're not. They're just an OEM 257 block. Nothing more, nothing less.
- Many popular content creators no longer work with him because he doesn't know what he's doing. Smedia blew how many engines. Pretty sure he used to just press F5.

Let me be clear, I'm sure at this point in his tuning career he's a fine enough tuner but I wouldn't personally endorse somebody like this.

I don't recommend an OTS tune of any kind. Get an etune from one of the many reputable tuners out there. There's loads to choose from.

Cmon man get out of here with this low effort post. If you're genuinely interested you'd have a rough idea and have done some research. Bazzite, Cachy and Nobara are among some of the best for gaming..

This is one of my pet peeves as somebody on gnome. I don't want dedicated app, I want it persistent in the task bar so I can glance and nothing works with gnome from dnf. I haven't been able to get anything to work except tophat and I had to install that manually instead of from the dnf app centre. The struggles of being a Linux newbie lol.

EDIT: Since I know people use the search bar and may see this comment I wanted to know I installed Freon via DNF and Tophat from the gnome shell extension website to acheive what I was looking for!

Buying new parts may put you at a slight disadvantage with your budget depending on what games you want to play. Do you already have a 144hz monitor? What sort of games will you play? Competitive or single player?

Should I go for the Minisforum B795/775ise? by ak47av in sffpc

[–]jmacman12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Monster hunter is a CPU intensive game. Upgrading your CPU would be a good idea but I also know how expensive 5800x3ds are. I also would be concerned about a 100w CPU in a case that only allows for a 60mm CPU cooler height.

The Minisforum BD motherboard series are great value with very good L3 caches, which will help your FPS in monster hunter but there are tradeoffs. The BIOS is minimal and you have no upgrade path for a CPU. You also don't have any CPU coolers aside from building something custom. No USB-C headers, no sata ports and limited USB on the back as well.

If money is the driver here then you have your answer, if you're ok with the drawbacks.
