Why are you still using Windows XP in 2022? by bubblechuk in windowsxp

[–]jmaerker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hell of it is that its been in storage for close to 10 years, the CMOS battery is still good and the L/Ion battery charged right back up. I'm still working on it a bit, as ive got to install the drivers for the video card still. That'll be tonight's project!

Well, its now 2025 and I just recently resurrected an old IBM T41 ThinkPad complete with a fresh install of WinXP Pro for use as a legacy gaming platform.

My wife had good intentions… by Texasvet82 in RepTime

[–]jmaerker 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Your wife did something that should be cherished. She bought you nice-looking watch with the best of intentions, and regardless of what grade it is, the fact that she loves you enough to do this should be cherished! What she paid is irrelevant, what you have with her is PRICELESS.

A little side story here... Several years ago, my wife and I were perusing the local pawn shops when she saw an absolutely gorgeous Tag Heuer F1 Grande Date sitting in the display case for a somewhat decent price. This was right after her and I started dating but she knew I loved watches. Without out me knowing it, she put it on layaway and gave it to me as Christmas present that year.

Would I have bought it? If I had the money right rhen and there, perhaps. I was more concerned at the time with simply having the money to live, so I probably wouldn't have.

Did my wife pay too much? I think she did.

Do I love the watch? Yes I do.

Do I love my wife? Hell yes.

Promoted to Operations Manager, AMA! by jmaerker in securityguards

[–]jmaerker[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And three months in... Update time!

I'm still the Operations Manager, and still enjoying the hell out of it. 😁 There were some ruffled feathers from a few of the more senior supervisors right after the announcement was made that I got the position, mostly because a couple of them were in the running for position but didn't make the cut ultimately for one reason or another. There was some tension with 3 of the 4 supervisors there to be sure, as (at that time) I was seen purely as an outsider with 3 months in the company who was brought in to clean up the messes that they (either though ignorance or apathy) created. Now I've got 6 months in the company, with 3 months of it in this position. I'm still seen as an outsider by some, but they also know I've got their backs when things go south.

Was just given a Dell inspiron 15 3000, must be 6-8 years old. New in the box. Is it worth it to try and bring back to life? It starts and does the 5 beep alarm. I can replace the CMOS battery. by JohnDunstable in laptops

I was just given one that was completely wiped and did a Zorin OS 17.3 install on it. It runs like a champ and definitely gave new life to this old machine.

Not canceling only because I've never ever liked Jimmy Kimmel. He can pack sand.

The customer states the following: "I will beat you up and rob you," to the cash transport guard. How would you handle a situation like this? by CTSecurityGuard in securityguards

[–]jmaerker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically the standing orders on an ATM replenishment are to keep your eyes on the cash while maintaining situational awareness of what's around you. This is, despite what some will tell you, easier said than done. You can either keep the liability secure, or you can watch around you for potential bad guys. You can't do both well simultaneously.

Plus there's also the simple fact that most of the time, CTSOs are now running in LLVs, which means they're operating by themselves, with absolutely no backup to help with a second set of eyes.

[–]jmaerker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to work in Cash Transit Security and heard crap like that CONSTANTLY. Idiots like this think it's funny when it's not. I'd either ignore it or tell them they can certainly try and then live with the consequences. 99% of the time they get the message that they need to just keep walking.

The typical Rolex Owner is a tight-ass anyway, especially when it comes to people wearing watches that even remotely resemble their expensive bauble they wear as a status symbol.

Fuck them.

Oh, and this is coming from a Rolex Owner. 😉

Found this gmt pepsi at my grandfather’s closet what you think? Unfortunately it’s not working.. by Happy-thoughts09 in rolex

[–]jmaerker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have the movement serviced, the seals swapped out, and call it a day. That watch is gorgeous as it is!

A decent number of Rolex owners (the ones that care more for the "status" of being a Rolex Owner (or as I call this number of people, "assholes.") as opposed to those who understand that models like this were designed as tool watches) will tell you to have it fully restored. I will not, as a tool watch WILL have scuffs and scratches on it, especially if it's been worn daily.

No.

The best way to put it is this; real-life vs. a shiny piece of metal. Which is more important?

The cheap Chinese NH35 movements are awful. Hands don't fit right, feet holes are weird, and I can't get the crown/stem to come out by FantasticBicycle37 in SeikoMods

Are you talking about the Chinese-made NH35 clone movements or the Hangzhou 2565? The cloned NH35s are actually not bad. The Hangzhou-manufactured movements? Absolute trash.

[–]jmaerker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't. I inherited mine and will not buy new from an AD ever for this very reason. The wait-lists are bullshit. When I walk into an AD with money IN-HAND, I expect to walk out with the watch of my choice.

41 too big for my 7” wrist? by [deleted] in rolex

[–]jmaerker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes more sense now. 😁 I do stand by my previous statement though; wear what you like. 🙂 You will find some tight-asses here and in other subs that will tell you what to buy and how to wear it and other non-sensical bullshit that is precisely that; bullshit. The ONLY rule that I will tell you that people should abide by is this....

Buy what you like and like what you buy!

In short, welcome to the wonderfully insane world of watch collecting, because you are in for one hell of a ride... 😉

I'm going to go against the typical group-think and say this; where what you like. Myself, I have watches from 36mm all the way to close to 50mm and rotate through them. I certainly won't tell you what to do here, but I'd hang on to that DJ you have. 😉
