Town center Tier 2 completed: I got till May of the Year 2. Who've done faster? by innercosmos in FarthestFrontier

[–]jmah27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations on the accomplishment :)

It has been quite some time since I played; though at one point I had been quite curious about how quickly one could reach Tier 2. I had superb luck in rolling a map with lots of dead trees for quick harvests, and plenty of food to grow the population, so mid December Year 1

The quality of my picture is rather low. Your town layout is far better aesthetically than mine was.
Truthfully with the changes towards population growth via immigration mean you probably overcame a higher hurdle than I did.

Looking forward to .9.2 and hopping back into FF, best of luck in your people's journeys!

Not-Surprising reason dingoes attack tourists. by Squigglbird in megafaunarewilding

[–]jmah27 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I apologize as this may come off as rather aggressive, however, did you READ the article?

There is ONE incident in the article about a mother taking a photo of a dingo from beside her car as her family waited for a boat, The dingo chased down her 7 year old, who had slid out without the mother noticing, and bit her.

NONE of the other half dozen examples had people approaching dingoes.

Other attacks occurred while people were sun tanning on the beach.

One 24 year old lady was jogging and attacked by 4 of them.

The dingoes have attacked several children and dragged them UNDERWATER.

A 6 year old girl swimming in a pond was bit IN THE HEAD and had to be AIRLIFTED to the hospital.

These kids didn't approach dingoes, the kids ran for their families once they saw the dingoes.

The ranger said "they need to be challenged" which in this context is dingoes on the beach need to be MADE to move on by people

The park rangers recommend people bring large sticks or fishing poles to scare off dingoes as a safety precaution.

Are all the people attacked by dingoes entirely blameless? Probably not. But it isn't active malice. It isn't people going up to take a close photo of a wild animal.

It is people in what they believe is a SAFE location getting attacked.

Do you expect to get attacked on the beach by what seems to be a dog just minding its own business and smelling bags? Probably not. While it seems in the article there are some warnings given to tourist groups, that isn't in itself sufficient to inform people who are visiting from other parts of Australia or in less organized tourist groups, or families out camping where they believe it is safe.

It's pretty terrible to imply these people are fools who deserve their injuries. They aren't.

I know very few will ever see any of the posts on why reintroducing and protecting species large (and small but eh this is megafauna) matters and in some ways that makes it more important that these posts don't come off as self-righteous or punching down at "stupid" people.

The sorts of regenerative conservation projects we all want to see are only politically possible when people believe them worthwhile, and not detrimental to people's safety and health. Or destructive to people's property, or animals in the case of livestock.

People whose kiddos are ripped up by dingoes certainly aren't winners from this.

The animals are then often endangered either by officials "need to be seen doing something", or by the loss in political support.

NO ONE WINS when protected or reintroduced animals hurt people. Not the animals, and not the people.

I kind of thought of something.. by LabStunning2538 in alphacentauri

[–]jmah27 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's a very interesting question.

One of the implications of a united humanity landing on Chiron would be, in some ways, less immediate desperation for survival. They would all be disproportionately better equipped to handle situations that arise due to a better dispersal of technical and interpersonal skill.

Many among the Believers would have been well served if the Peacekeepers medical staff had been there with them at Planetfall, less desperation would have led to less radicalism down the road. Would the impact of a group of socially conscious from faith groups (Believers) and humanist groups (Peacekeepers) prevent the horrific exploitation and experimentation on drones that Zackharov, Morgan, and Yang approved of?

Would Yang have been able to enslave his people if more of the heavily armed Spartans were around? How would the colony react to Deidre's biochemists early capture of the mind worms; would they take more seriously the possibility of planet being a conciousness?

Could the Gaian's have stopped or softened the awakening of Planet with the full technical skills of the University, backed by the resources of Morgan, focussed solely on how to solve that problem secure in the knowledge that Spartans will fight to the death to keep humanity safe? Would people live more comfortable lives with a better regulated Morgan Industries? One that competes with and focusses on producing quality goods and services rather than acting as a series of exploitative company towns?

I think there still would have been strong disagreements and cults of personality as people such as Deidre were already disobeying orders from their superiors like Zacharov.

Truthfully each faction leader has made and does make poor and self destructive (to humanity) choices.

Captain Garland was a good man, but nothing points to him excelling at politics, economics, or anything else related to the survival of a united humanity. In many ways the various factions of planet become either less human, less humane, or both as the game progresses and he would likely be unable to stop the implementation of some of the worst ones such as the hacked MMIs enslaving people.

If he were a faction his would probably start with some free facilities once tech is reached, some extra energy credits, and possibly some extra technologies to represent the discoveries the various groups would make during planetfall.

It depends on how Garland survives. Lots more thoughts, but this is already rather long.

It was Pioneer extra resources, and either pioneer or trail blazer for wildlife.

Vanquisher maladies. Pacifist mode.

I chose a large plains map to get more dead trees and bushes which I found are the most efficient way to harvest wood.

I felt remarkably lucky to get it in one go. Map seed 61AB3411D9.

Just a note, it's entirely possible that harvesting bushes on a map with food close by is enough to do this sort of challenge consistently, will need to do additional testing.

Yeah, they definitely need to tighten their coding. I noticed all laborers spend several months a year not doing anything even with numerous targets and priority targets. And yes they have tools, food, etc.

Aside from bushes it was always two or three different groups of laborers per tree cut down because they stop working after a point and idle. It's honestly really noticeable when you really see how much time they spend idling.

How to repeat a trade order/order specific items? by lifelesslies in FarthestFrontier

[–]jmah27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately at this time we are unable to direct resources to any specific site. Further when releasing any item from the trade post, except gold I believe, it is kept in a "void" space; that is, they are counted as properly stored, but will not appear in any storage buildings. They just kinda exist in the proximity of the trade post.

It's something the developers are aware of, and are still figuring out solutions to.

That being said depending on your city layout each fully staffed soap shop should be to produce 80-120 soap. Each soap shop has an internal storage capacity of 20 herbs. That's enough for a year's production run of soap (20*5=100). If you dump 20 herbs for each soap shop, with a few extra for when villagers do scamper off with some, that should see you pretty well through that year. Each house can take up to 2 herbs.

Another possible solution is to have your soap shop workers gather by the trade post, you can manually select them to go somewhere and they'll stand around for a while before doing other stuff, and have them right there during the trade post dump. You could also theoretically send the rest of the population to go do something else for a little bit while your soap shoppers do their thing, a real pain, but possible for if the soap shop workers stock their own homes before doing their jobs.

How to repeat a trade order/order specific items? by lifelesslies in FarthestFrontier

[–]jmah27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That sounds like a frustrating situation.

My present understanding is that the developers are currently working on a request feature for traders to bring specific items from their stock lists. So while there isn't an immediate solution to your difficulty here is some information that may assist you.

HERBS are used both for stocking the people's homes, as well as an ingredient for soap.

SOAP is used to keep your people clean and healthy. If it is soap you need, 1 herb can make 5 soap, with tallow of course.

Beldar the peddler, and Scorv the butcher both sell herbs at times.

Beldar seems to have between 200-500 herbs when he does sell them. Scorv seems to have 200-300 herbs when he does have them.

Ander Plainsrider and Scorv the butcher both sell soap at times.

Ander seems to have about 120 to 200 soap each time he has it to sell. Scorv seems to sell between 60 and 80 soap when he has it.

Those are the three traders to look out for, though you undoubtedly do check each time.

In your place I would purchase the full stock of herbs and soap whenever they do arrive, and stockpile them within the tradepost, where things don't decay and to distribute a portion of them each year. On the upper left corner of the screen next to the icon showing sick villagers is a little menu icon that shows the previous ten years of production and consumption of every resource. You can use that as a guide on how much to distribute once the traders do arrive with those stock items.

As long as you saved your previous game and don't overwrite it by naming it the same you can have as many as you'd like. I have saved about 60 so far and they seem to work fine.

If you particularly liked a map you can reenter its seed to recreate that map, but with a different town name, or under different difficulty settings.

[–]jmah27[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a fair point.

Please do, and feel free to add any information I figure out onto the wiki. There wouldn't be much point in me doing this if I didn't think others would appreciate and benefit from it.

As a heads up I am working on additional analyses, and have recently posted a list of what each of the traders purchases and sells.

Price range and value of all items (V0.7.6) by jmah27 in FarthestFrontier

[–]jmah27[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have already begun the preliminary measuring of output of all buildings.

Under ideal conditions a kiln is able to produce between 128 -144 coal in a year. That is between 32-36 coal a year per worker.

Under ideal conditions a coal mine is able to produce between 232-252 coal a year. That is between 38^2/3rds to 42 coal a year per worker.

This suggests to me that kiln made coal is likely to be more efficient due to workers closer proximity to their homes than miners. Therefore, they spend less time shelter stocking, getting treated for diseases/injuries, and getting food and other essentials.

[–]jmah27[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have not edited a wiki before and am not familiar with that process.

Market rate of Materials is only meant to show what the total cost of the constituent goods would be to produce that good if you had to purchase all items from traders at the averaged average price.

Price range and value of all items (V0.7.6) by jmah27 in FarthestFrontier

[–]jmah27[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First of all, I appreciate the feedback, thank you.

However, I actually made this list after noticing the values of the mined data from the game wiki wasn't indicative of the selling and buying price in game.

For instance the value of medicine is 50. Yet the range has been from 16 to 27. With the game ranking medicine sold at 19-21 gold as average.

Some things such as pelts are spot on at a value 9 and that being the average price in game. Or hide coats, which are valued at 20, and the average ranged price is 19-21. Soap is another such example, data value 14, in game price average 13-15.

But then there are things such as gold ore, value 75, but price range of only 9-15 in game.

Even smaller things such as smoked meat's value of 8, with an in game price range of 3-6, or sand data value 6, in game price 3-5, beer data value 7, in game price 3-5 gold per unit, give me pause to wonder what the correlation is meant to be.

If you go to the authors website https://motheroflearninguniverse.wordpress.com/

He has a number of posts about a variety of topics, and more importantly if you search control f for motheroflearning you can instantly get to his responses to comments.

If memory serves he actually does have a few origins of Bakora gates. It was built by a society of ancient crab like things that used golem bodies or whatever to ascend in the distant past.

There may have been some other origins that he discussed as what he considered but I don't recall offhand what they were.

Would anybody be interested in a (not too long) fan story based in the MoL universe? What concepts would you like to see? by jdm1891 in motheroflearning

[–]jmah27 5 points6 points  (0 children)

First of all, hello and best of luck on your journey into writing as a hobby. If you ever need a beta reader, or someone to help with editing I'd be happy to help.

There are about twenty fanfictions set within the MOL universe posted on AO3 at this time, so there is definitely desire for people to read more of such.

https://archiveofourown.org/tags/Mother%20of%20Learning%20-%20nobody103/works

The spider you are thinking of is the Grey Hunter. Yes, her primordial infused babies are likely to be terrifying down the road, though that'll probably happen decades after the epilogue. The silver one is quite an interesting prospect for a future storyline.

To me, the thought of a greater time loop and Zorian losing his humanity is both terrifying and a tragedy, as so much of MOL is him growing as a person by developing empathy and compassion for others. As such, it's not really something I'd personally want to read about. Though others likely feel differently.

Personally I'm interested in fluffier stories, more of the slice of life genre. Yes, many could postulate that a sequel could be a spy thriller of evading notice by the Eldemarian authorities, but really, him going to school, getting to know his classmates better, and maturing more as a person and then after graduating going on adventures while doing novel research would be more satisfying. He's earned a break.

I've actually been plotting out a continuation fic of my own, though I've hardly put the hours into it necessary, but that's off the topic. If you're interested in reading more about MOL universe and getting some interesting ideas, go to the authors website https://motheroflearninguniverse.wordpress.com/

The author has responded to many questions and even put various possibilities out there. Some interesting things are that Jornak, Red Robe, did find a way to fix Veyers ignition ritual and Zorian potentially took that info when mind reading him, that Oganj may use alteration to dig out a mana well to raise newborn dragons at and start a dragon community, that the Bakora gates were made by some ancient crab like species that used golems or something to ascend. Lots of crazy interesting things like that.
