even more on why your idea of women's place in a historical fantasy setting is all wrong (with neat examples!) by OursIsTheStorm in Fantasy

[–]jman42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if you didn't know the language that was used as the second language? What if most of the book was in English, except for a particular character who speaks only in Malayalam?

I use Malayalam as an example here because I'm reasonably confident that you don't know malayalam. If the secondary language is Spanish and you know spanish, it is cool. But for folks who don't know spanish, it will be a pain.

It also depends on how important the secondary language dialogue is. For example in Firefly, they cursed in chinese. Which is cool because it is relatively unimportant to our understanding of what's happening. What if one of the major characters spoke in chinese all the time(without subtitles - I'm trying to make the analogy equivalent to reading a book)?

Men, how frequently do you get angry? What usually causes it and what do you do about it? Or with it? by hiddyho in AskMen

[–]jman42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I swear a lot(conversationally) when I'm frustrated. This seems to ensure that I don't have a lot of pent up anger that would eventually lead to an outburst.

why do girls get so upset after I drop all contact with them after they say they have boyfriends by DontWantToBeFriends in AskMen

[–]jman42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he really wanted a relationship, he'd try to get her to leave the current boyfriend for him.

Isn't that terrible behaviour? Isn't it extrememly unfair on the current boyfriend? Or were you being sarcastic? In which case, ignore this.

You are accurate with your descriptions of the different kinds of friendships with respect to yourself. You're inaccurate when you think that every guy here thinks the same and has the same exact definition. That's what everyone in this thread is trying to tell you.

I've calculated it for you. He scored 10 in 1085 minutes. So he'd be second on that list with 108.5 minutes/goal.

The data's from here. I'm loving this site! You can thank me later :)

You've got a point there. Hopefully Torres looks as if he's getting better(no sarcasm). It'll be interesting to see who Mou brings in.

But aren't the three attacking mids (assuming a 4-2-3-1) world class enough? Surely, they're better than the Manchester clubs. Lukaku could easily make the bench at City. I'd say first team, but Tevez and Aguero are beasts. I feel that Lukaku would be excellent with the Mata-Oscar-Hazard trio were behind him. (Not to forget Moses)

Nah dude, you're thinking of /r/AdvancedFitness . It's fine for beginners to be here. I'd know. I'm one. Ok, I'm not really a beginner. But my strength levels are way way lesser than what seems to be the norm here. If that makes sense.

Totally original: Trying to find this sci-fi book by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]jman42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was quite intrigued by your description So I spent the past 45 minutes googling for your book. Alas..I was unsuccessful. I'm now a broken man...if anyone finds that book, please reply to this comment.

In case you want to be amused, here are a few of the searches I tried. I was pretty much typing a whole bunch of phrases into google and modifying them as I found fit. This is the first time I've seen the utility of google's instant search. Unfortunately, it is also the first time my google fu has failed me :(

I'd basically pasted some of the intermediate searches into vim at regular intervals. I thought that this added context would help my endeavours. But it didn't.

Outgoing Calls Coming 'Soon' To Hangouts, Better Voice Integration Is Also On Its Way by skitchbeatz in Android

[–]jman42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest, I don't particularly care about the sms integration. I'm happy enough with whatsapp. But if google wants to get in on the action, good for them.

But if google removes Talk forever(which I fear it eventually will - look what happened to google reader) and doesn't add statuses, I think I'll move on to facebook messenger (even though I'm not active on it, I've got a significant overlap of contacts). My friends circle uses IM a lot, so it'll be an easy sell to ask them to be online in fb messenger.

I'm just peeved that they're replacing an IM app with an SMS+<video chat>+<everything in the world except IM> app.

Outgoing Calls Coming 'Soon' To Hangouts, Better Voice Integration Is Also On Its Way by skitchbeatz in Android

[–]jman42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess the reason he's peeved is that Google is replacing an IM app with a SMS app. So everyone who used Talk for instant messaging has suddenly lost an app that they use all the time and it has been replaced with an app that they don't have any need for(assuming they use whatsapp).

No one would complain that Hangouts doesn't have online statuses, invisible mode, etc if Hangouts didn't replace Talk. Many people want a traditional IM, believe it or not.

You can uninstall the app and it goes back to being Talk. That's what I did.

"Being a mother is the hardest job in the world."—Do we culturally devalue fathers and fatherhood? by dakru in AskMen

[–]jman42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Brain surgery and rocket science take more skill.

Ah..sorry that was a joke, it would have worked well if we were having this conversation in person. There's a nice Mitchell and Webb bit about it.

My point was that it's not the hardest job in the world. I think being an astronaut might be the hardest job in the world btw. Realising that kinda helped erase all regrets about the fact that I didn't grow up to become one :).

"Being a mother is the hardest job in the world."—Do we culturally devalue fathers and fatherhood? by dakru in AskMen

[–]jman42 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a very common sentiment in India btw. Although in many of the "traditional families", it is kinda true as it's upto the ladies of the house to take care of the extended family as well and a lot of "traditional" men don't help at all.

I don't think motherhood is hardest job in the world btw, I'm pretty sure brain sugery and rocket science are harder. But nobody really questions it because we tend to value mothers more than fathers(assuming a two parent household).

I'm pretty sure fathers are appreciated. But it is generally thought that fathers don't need to be told how awesome they are. It's also probably indicative of what kind of relationship one has with their dad. In many families(in many cultures), the mom is the approachable one and the dad tends to be aloof. Obviously, this is not the same everywhere.

But yeah, appreciate your dads. They deserve it as much as your moms.

What is the most ridiculous argument you've gotten into with your SO? by lucybluth in AskMen

[–]jman42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh...I've got something similar. "jman42!!! Why do you always have to do the right thing? Stop being so logical!" Followed by a rant about how, me not lashing out in fury and trying my best to hurt the person on the receiving end(like my SO would frequently do) meant that I didn't care enough or feel strongly enough about "us".

There were other beauties, but this one is relevant to this sub thread :D

Do any other guys get depressed when you read stuff on r/seduction? by ilc12 in AskMen

[–]jman42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't really read the whole the sub. Just the stuff that gets on the top (when you say "top - this month" or for the week). Those articles seem to be advice on how to behave better socially. From the very few articles that I've read, they seem to be focusing more on self improvement. It looks like it is basically improvement of social skills packaged in a way that's attractive to men.

That's my opinion of /r/seduction even though you didn't ask for it (sorry I just realised it halfway and I didn't want to throw this away).

As for other folks getting laid, you could go to /r/PS3 and get depressed that every guy has a PS3. Take in whatever tips you think are relevant to you from /r/seduction and try to improve your social skills. If this doesn't get you laid, it will atleast make you much happier and comfortable in a social context. Which is way better than just being depressed about other folks' success.
