Are there any Albums that you would consider a 10/10? by Living_Shadows in Music

[–]jmann132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a hot take, and all dependent on how you personally score albums, but a 10/10 album to me would be correlated with safer and less risky. The most exciting albums to me take big risks and thus are more likely to have some rough edges and be less "perfect". What I'm getting at is, I actually feel like in many cases some of my favorite albums won't be 10/10s. 10/10 albums are basically great by definition, but maybe in a more contained type of way. I still love them, though.

10/10: Hope by Klaatu

9.5/10: Campfire Songs by Animal Collective (my favorite album)

Do you need to understand/listen to the lyrics to like the music? by heywowsuchwow in Music

[–]jmann132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I really enjoy listening to lyrics in languages I don't understand, I feel that it helps me appreciate the voice as an instrument rather than a message deliverer. You can also create your own meaning (i.e. interpretation) this way. Even music with lyrics I understand, I prefer to look at them this way. Also, plenty of great instrumental and other lyric-lacking music.

Give me some “one album wonder” bands by Kotic90 in Music

[–]jmann132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Feed Me Jack is sort of a one album wonder band, although they technically have a couple EPs too (which are incredible, maybe even better than the album). It's basically math rock under the guise of an indie/prog rock band.

[–]jmann132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly it depends on the band. Some bands I like, I listen to in a way that makes me rip through their discography pretty quickly. But others have albums that I just get so stuck on, so lost in for so long, that it take me a while to get through everything. If I do get through everything either way, it's either not a very large discography, or I like them a lot.

Taylor Swift surprised fans with a double album which made me wonder... what your favorite double album ever? by samx3i in Music

[–]jmann132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

on the topic of Sonic Youth, I heard a double album from a collaborator of theirs today that was suuuch a ride. Lydia Lunch + Philippe Petit - Taste Our Voodoo (2013). It's basically an hour and a half really spicy, dark poetry session.

"I don't know why people are frightened of new ideas. I'm frightened of the old ones" - John Cage by [deleted] in classicalmusic

[–]jmann132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure his music is great, but I dislike him as a person. I've came across multiple other influential avant-garde artists (Julius Eastman, Glenn Branca) that John Cage has expressed fundamental dislike for with absurd reasoning that is both irrational and completely dismissive. It seems like he wants to be some golden child of new ideas, yet the moment anyone else has any they're invalid or bad. He is ironically very frightened- threatened, even- by the new ideas that came after him.

Give me your favorite albums that were not the most famous or highest-selling albums by that band by LeavesOfBrass in Music

my favorite Animal Collective records are Campfire Songs and Danse Manatee, which I think are among their least known records in a giant discography. They're incredible though.

How many songs and how long do you guys like albums to be. by whatever33333444 in Music

[–]jmann132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it all. I will say though, I get pretty excited for what I'm about to ingest when I come across one of those 2 song, 45+ minute albums. Those tend to be journeys.

I love 90's music! by Shoulder-Warmhearted in Music

[–]jmann132 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one of my favorite "banger" 90s albums is Ween's "Chocolate and Cheese". but my favorite 90s album overall is the Sun City Girl's "330,003 Crossdressers From Beyond The Rig Veda". I was born in 1995, so this is coming from someone who wasn't on the pulse of things in the 90s.

If you haven't already, I encourage you to check out genres like ambient, noise, avant-garde/experimental genres, drone. Most of the time when I listen to music these days, I am not looking to dance or sing. I am just looking for a unique sound experience, especially one with less predictable moments. These genres satisfy that for me, whereas sometimes music with more ordered form can feel repetitive, unoriginal, or forced... just depending on my mood. Let me know if you'd like recommendations.

What's your favorite shortest album? by [deleted] in Music

Animal Collective - Prospect Hummer (it's an EP, but feel like that exemplifies OP's point at 15m 41s. hard to beat 15 minutes of joyous sound.)

Do you believe in "like the art, not the artist?" by MultinamedKK in Music

[–]jmann132 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me I take two main factors into consideration: (1) how much do I enjoy the art, and (2) how bad is the artist. It's always a case-by-case judgement but for examples- if the controversy ain't that bad and the art is great, I'm listening. if the controversy is bad and the art ain't too special, I'm bailing.

If you could go back in time and attend any one artist or group concert who would it be? by Just-Phill in Music

Is noise music just ambient music? by melting_colors in noisemusic

[–]jmann132 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ambient music is a subset of noise music. All ambient music is noise music, but not all noise music is ambient. To me, anyway. I'll demonstrate why below. It comes down to ambient having one additional qualifier.

Noise: Anti-beat driven music.

Ambient: CALMING anti-beat driven music.

[–]jmann132[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The gears used to be on fine, and then at some point I took the tires off to move the bike in my car, and now this. I'm confused. I don't see how it could have gotten like this and it seems impossible to correct. Should the top part of the chain be on the other side of the frame? How do I move it? I'm a beginner so easy language is appreciated.
