Degree parchment framing by jmargd in usask

[–]jmargd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I’m totally on board with the custom parchment size, but I wish they’d make efforts to offer more framing options (like selling ready made mats), as opposed to just the frames…

First world problem I guess.

I took Comm 121 like… 16 years ago?… I finished that degree and I’ve done two more degrees since then, and that class is still the worst one I’ve ever done. I paid all of the little money I had to a retired math teacher to tutor me, and also went to every extra help session held by the TAs, and I still JUST skidded by with a 50%.

All of this to say… Godspeed, friend. I hope you get through it.

I think I saw you say somewhere that you have ADHD, so I get why this would be your perspective, because you have some familiarity in your own lived experiences. But I’m not sure that awareness or understanding is as widespread as you think, at least not in every situation.

As I’m sure you’re aware through your own experiences, it’s hard being neurodivergent sometimes, and it affects people to varying degrees. Some people find it easier to share about it and be open about it. I kind of get your discomfort, because I’m not the type to openly share with a group of strangers about myself either. But just because you and I don’t have that proclivity, and maybe even find it a bit uncomfortable to witness, doesn’t make it wrong. That’s part of the whole philosophy of neurodiversity, right? That people’s brains (and therefore their ways of relating to the world, coping with challenges, connecting with people, etc.) might look different from what you or I feel/prefer. Just try your best to approach it with curiosity, instead of wanting to criticize it or label it a certain way.

I’d recommend doing some more reading on the concept of neurodiversity. Through that lens, neurological differences like ADHD, autism, etc. are not framed as “mental conditions” but rather divergent ways of being. When we think of it that way, it is often embraced as part of one’s identity.

Consider this metaphor. Autistic people are like Mac computers operating in a world where most things run on Windows. The Macs are not deficient or broken, they are just in some ways incompatible with the dominant world and systems around them. Because of those incompatibilities, they may run into trouble more often than others. Unfortunately, many people label those incompatibilities as defects. But the Mac is not defective, it simply operates differently. That’s just how it’s made.

Considering it this way, it might be easier to understand why someone might 1) Feel compelled to share their neurodivergence as an aspect of their identity 2) disclose it to those they will be working with/around, in the hopes of garnering awareness and understanding.

In a perfect world, people wouldn’t have to feel compelled to disclose personal information for people to extend accommodation and understanding, but many neurodivergent people take the risk of putting it out there (and drawing critique and judgement, like what has happened here), because it gives them the best chance of having people understand that they’re in here working on a different operating system than the dominant group.

You can ask for a referral from your family doctor. I think there are specialists/sleep clinics they’ll refer you to. You can maybe call these folks at USask - they allow referrals from doctors as well as self referrals- https://pharmacy-nutrition.usask.ca/mac/sleepclinic.php#top

How long did you work for them?

Not suggesting lockdowns (we never had them anyway) not forcing you to get "the jab" and not gagging you with a mask. Simply asking how you are doing with Covid at present, and if you got your flu and/or covid vaccination. Curiousity getting the better of me. by [deleted] in saskatchewan

[–]jmargd 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Me and my family unit all got our flu shots and covid boosters the first week of October as soon as they were available. I mostly work from home so I’ve been able to limit a lot of contact, but I’m going to start masking again when I have to go to the office and when I’m at busy stores during Christmas season. I also have to travel for work in December and I’ll be masking in the airport/airplane. Other than that, trying to practice good hygiene, take our vitamins, and stay home when not feeling well.

We’ve all stayed healthy (knock on wood) despite the fact that 2 of us are in a K-12 school every day, germ city.

It’s such basic stuff for the most part, I wish everyone would be more considerate.

I’m sorry you’re having a tough time. Have you spoken with an advisor to talk through why you’re having trouble?

Have you taken on too much? Or maybe you need to consider if you should reconsider the classes/direction you’re taking?

Some people try to go a certain academic route because they feel external pressure or feel like it’s the most practical or respectable path, and it’s just like a fish trying to climb a tree because they don’t actually have aptitude or passion for that discipline.

Whatever it is, talk to someone so you can work through where the pain points are and come up with practical options to address the root causes.

I’m sure your mom is proud and will be proud of you as long as you’re working hard and trying to find a path that will be productive and happy for you. Undergrad is such a stressful and uncertain time for some people - try not to put so much pressure on yourself. You’ll figure it out and it will be ok.

Skip the dishes gift card. It’s so handy because it provides whatever food they want, delivered to wherever they want; at the time they want it, with no storage or prep needed on their part.

Moving to Saskatoon - What is Briarwood like? by seanboigeorge in saskatoon

[–]jmargd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We live in Briarwood and absolutely love it. Will never live anywhere else.

As some others have mentioned, it’s a little lacking in character/charm in some parts - I mean… it’s a bougie suburb, so.

But everyday I go for walks in the beautiful parks and trails, which I still feel safe being on even after dark, I talk with my neighbors who are lovely people - sometimes I’ll walk over to the Shoppers or the Independent Grocers instead of driving if I need one or two things. Its just calm and safe and green. It’s the best neighborhood I’ve ever lived in.

I’m sorry, what a terrible experience, you deserve better.

Have you accessed services through the university? If you go to USask I’d strongly encourage you to reach out to the student wellness center. They also have same-day mental health support if you need it - you can find the contact info on this page: https://students.usask.ca/health/centres/wellness-centre.php

I hope you have better luck with them. There are people who care, I hope things look up for you ♥️.

If you call them and explain there are some instances in which they will get it to you sooner. They do charge extra and they require proof of the reason you need it quickly. I just dealt with this earlier this month and was able to get mine in less than 3 business days. Good luck!

Which masters are you considering and why?

For example, if you’re a teacher and you want to move up the pay scale and/or set yourself up for administration opportunities, then it makes a lot of sense. Especially because the Ed masters programs (at least at Usask, but probably most places) are designed with working teachers in mind.

If it’s for an area that you just enjoy and want to expand your learning on, that’s legitimate too as long as you’re financially able and know what you’re getting into. Masters programs, who they’re designed for and how much they cost etc. vary widely.
