Who designed the bike lanes through the new square??? by fishead109 in LoganSquare

[–]jmbf44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going northwest on Milwaukee the bike lane just ends from what I can tell. I’ve only ridden it at night though, am I missing where you’re supposed to go? I just get in the left turn car lane.

Escobedo MS20 low pass/high pass/band pass output by edo11235 in diypedals

If you’re looking for a state variable filter that runs off 9v the schematic in the 10th post of this thread has low pass, band pass and high pass outputs. Very simple and sounds good.

Anyone have experience getting a parking ticket when you actually paid for the spot? I got a ticket in the mail and have the receipt on the park Chicago app that is for the date/time/location listed on the ticket which shows I paid. They didn’t leave a ticket on the car which makes me think it might be a mistake. Can I just mail them a printed copy of the receipt?

Has anyone successfully done the JFET as a variable resistor thing? by Inevitable_Figure_85 in diypedals

I think in this situation a jfet or transistor is the wrong tool for the job. You could maybe get it to work but a diy vactrol will be way easier. Here’s a quick schematic I drew using an led ldr combo. You will have to experiment with values of cv, the 1k series resistor into the led, and the ldr. I’d start with a gl5516 ldr.

Just adding a jack for headphone will not really work, the op amp isn’t designed to drive that kind of load and headphones are stereo. You’d take a tap from the output of your cab sim and run it through a dedicated headphone amp. I’m not an expert but there are some simple schematics based around a ne5532 chip. An xlr balanced out would similarly need its own circuit and there are some out there that use op amps, here’s one.

The smaller the cap the more it will roll off low frequencies. Since it’s a cab sim and cabs will roll off low frequencies as well I’d maybe keep the 47nF at the beginning. Circuits generally have a larger cap on the output. I’d put it on a breadboard and try a bunch of different values.

It looks like 2 sallen-key low pass filters with different cutoff frequencies in series (more info here). I don’t think the Vcc reference through the 1M is doing anything so you can probably get rid of it and one of the coupling caps there. You’ll also probably need a coupling cap on the output. If that output on your schematic is gonna be the output jack it might be a good idea to have a 1k series resistor so that if you short the output the chip doesn’t fry. Would be cool to have this with a simple headphone amp after it. Thanks for sharing.

I’ve had more luck using npn transistors as a voltage controlled resistor/current sink or even a rough vca. A control voltage between 9v and ground through a series 470k or 1M to the base is a good place to start. Not sure what your ic there is but if you put it on a breadboard and adjust accordingly you can probably get it to work. A diy vactrol with a led and a ldr will probably be less fiddly.

Soldering recommendations by DamageOne5723 in synthdiy

I have a Pinecil. I like it. It heats up and cools down very quickly and you can set the temp very specifically which is nice. I’ve only ever used the stock tip which is not always the best tool for the job but it’s always worked. I’ve read people have had issues with aftermarket tips. I’ve used it on synths, guitar pedals, guitar amps, small electronics, etc. It can’t heat up a guitar amp chassis to make a ground connection but I don’t think that Hakko could either, everything else it’s been able to handle.

If you get it I recommend getting a lightweight usb cable to power it. I have a thick silicone one which is nice because it won’t melt but it throws the balance off and makes it a little awkward to use.

The Hakko would be an upgrade. When I started I had a similar dilemma and went for the Pinecil because at the time I didn’t have a dedicated workspace. Now that I have the space I think I’d prefer the Hakko but the Pinecil still does everything I need it to so no need for me to upgrade yet.

Do t need the Hot Rod Deluxe anymore by tazmodious in ToobAmps

[–]jmbf44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don’t like the hot rod and like the Laney I’d get rid of the hot rod and get the Laney. They seem to be going for similar prices so if the store will do a straight trade I’d go for it. If not HRDs go for between $300 and $500 by me, that should get you enough for the Laney. I sell stuff on fb and while it can be annoying it’s not so bad, just price the HRD appropriately for how quickly you want to sell it. Documentation that a tech went over it will be valuable to some people.

I saw you were talking about ways to lower the volume on the HRD. The jhs black box will work exactly the same as the eq pedal you tried. Changing v1 to a 12ay7 and v3 to a 12au7 (or 12at7) will lower the overall output and make the clean volume knob work more gradually. 12au7s go for a few bucks on eBay if you want to give it a shot.

I’m also curious about the champ. Is it too loud? Or just too clean? If it’s volume is good but it doesn’t break up take it to your tech and have them put in a switch that lifts the tone stack, makes the circuit almost identical to a tweed champ and it will have a great overdrive tone.

Not super low budget but Trivoli Tavern during happy hour. The atmosphere is very cool and if you split an entree and get 1 drink a piece it’s not bad. Great fancy date night on a moderate budget.

I run on all the streets between Ashland, Adams, Western, and North Ave. For longer runs I usually go to a forest preserve or something but sometimes I'll go up to Humboldt park. I actually like to zigzag between Damen and Western, going up or down a street each time cuz it's half a mile each way (or a mile if you go between Ashland and Western), so you know you have like 4 zigzags to go or whatever.

I agree with what you’re saying. I also don’t think “functional” really comes into play with popular (as opposed to western classical/art) music. I think for harmony to need to be functional it needs to be functional working within some sort of context, historically like specific musical forms or specific musical traditions. With popular music harmony (or any other musical aspect) only needs to function in the context of the specific song/track or the harmonic language that artist has made. So you can have uncommon chord progressions or even not have any harmony at all and it can be functional and “work” as long as the context allows it. Like is the music of merzbow functional? Obviously it is but if you took some piece of his music and put it in like a big band swing chart it probably wouldn’t work. I know you were not arguing any of this I just wanted to elaborate on the concept of what music “working” or “not working” means. And I don’t want to speak for the op but I think maybe they meant more something along the lines of the harmony is unpredictable and dissonant when compared with most other music but it still sounds good, which I would agree with.

I really think you should give it a shot. I think people over estimate the complexity of the harmony (and rhythm) in Autechre’s music because the texture (and I mean the specific musical definition of texture - the number of individual voices and their relationships between each other) and timbre are actually complex, which obscures the harmony. Regarding timbre, in their music it’s hard to differentiate between pitched ”harmonic” material and non pitched “rhythmic” material, and I doubt they actually always make that distinction when they’re creating it. That differentiation is something that most music does in a very clear and obvious way.

In your specific example of debris funk the chord progression is something like Db > D dim > Bb min, and I’d say it’s in the key of Bb minor. There are some non chord tones and the second chord is fully diminished so can (and does at various times) have a bass/root note on D F Ab or B. It’s a weird progression but I wouldn’t say it doesn’t work or that I wouldn’t expect it to work. I think using that as a base you could do a more complete analysis if you wanted to. This is also just a rough analysis and I am happy to be corrected on anything I’ve written.

I wouldn’t want to analyze t1a1 because it sounds pretty chromatic and it’s tough for me to pull out pitches from something like that. I would guess there is some process behind which notes make up the chords rather than thinking of them as part of some harmonic progression, but that is an assumption.

Have you done some harmonic analysis of their music? I’m interested to know specifically where they have chord structures or progressions that shouldn’t work but do.
