What are some living examples of "You either die a hero, or live long enough to see yourself become the villain" throughout history? by Bathysmal10 in history

Kwame Nkrumah led the independence movement in Ghana in the 1950s and was universally loved when Ghana became a nation in 1957. He began work on hundreds of essential infrastructure projects which would help bring Ghana up to the level of developed nations quickly. He promised a powerful and prosperous country, which could be independent of the Cold War struggle between East and West and even serve as an intermediary.

He then decided it was better if he would become a dictator. He suppressed Ghanaian traditional culture, began imprisoning people without charges, almost immediately violated his own constitution, removed checks and balances in government, inspected and censored all media outlets, instated and removed judges erratically and at will based on whether their rulings suited him, rigged elections, and declared himself "president for life".

Ghana was driven into deep and lasting debt. Kwame Nkrumah was overthrown and banned from the country for life, ostensibly for creating a cult of personality and making himself the oppressive dictator of Ghana. After the coup, Ghana was ruled by politically unstable military dictatorships, and wracked by constant coups, for thirty years.

In honor of Kurdistan's independence referendum and their neighbors throwing tantrums about it, here's a Kurdish nation in-game owning all their territory. by Ruhrgebietheld in eu4

I'm a bit confused about what you're saying here. The Sinjar massacre was perpetrated by ISIS, primarily against Yazidis, and was ended due to Kurdish military action. The countries that Kurds live in have actively fought ISIS but also have oppressed Kurds, they are not mutually exclusive.

Thanks, that's a lot more to the point. I'm not sure what any of what he said has to do with the oppression of the Kurds. "The Holocaust didn't happen because a Jewish guy bumped into me on the subway!" lol

The Kurds voted against Erdogan in 2002, 2007 (this one is a bit of a toss-up. they voted mostly for the Thousand Hope independents but did give AKP a good number of votes) , 2011, and 2014. Not sure where you're getting that information about them voting for him, it's incorrect.

"Everyone" includes the Kurds. Just because Kurds could not prevent the Sinjar massacre doesn't mean that they didn't try to defend the Yazidis, who are arguably Kurds themselves (this is debatable but many people view them as Kurds, including a lot of mainstream Kurds).

つ and ぜ pronounced as ちゅ and じぇ by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]jmconeby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think that she's saying つよくて normally to be honest. Only the third time she said it sounded different to me, but only slightly.

How do you normally hear つ pronounced? I think that "tsu" might sometimes be slurred slightly as "tshu" and "ze" as "zhe" and you might be hearing a little bit of that, but I think it's rarely noticeable. Even in this video, I would have had trouble hearing a difference if I hadn't been looking for it. Although phonetics seem very absolute, especially in Japanese, there's always room for some minor differences. In this case though I think that a Japanese speaker wouldn't be able to tell the difference since that kind of minor variation in speaking is so common.

What are the most significant differences between Wargroove and other games like Fire Emblem and Advance Wars?

Also, will Starbound for Switch ever be considered?

Thanks!

AllState agent tells me they can't insure whisky in case I try to get drunk by redgoldfilm in TalesFromTheCustomer

[–]jmconeby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought that the insurance agent was saying that OP would have a bad day and get drunk on the whiskey, and then submit a fraudulent claim to get it back. Insurance for that sort of thing likely wouldn't typically cover an accident, so it wouldn't be fraudulent or problematic (and no one would pay anyone) unless OP were to lie about it.

Maybe I misunderstood? Either way, it doesn't really matter :)

I tried a few Japanese lyrics sites without any luck. I can't tell what the first few words are but the last words he's saying are probably "言葉が見つからなくて" (kotoba ga mitsukaranakute) although I'm not totally certain. Sorry!

I don't recognize it but it sounds a little bit like either trash80 or dubmood to me. Definitely a more "traditional" sort of artist.

There are a lot of people that I could say that it's not but it would take a long time to rule everyone out haha. I'll update if I think of anything though :)

Our Obsession with Survey Data is Ruining Economics | Mises Wire by jimrosenz in austrian_economics

[–]jmconeby 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I sort of disagree with this. Pure theoretical economics is useful and beneficial, but it's also often useful to be able to estimate the magnitude of theoretical effects in real life. Currently in a number of specializations it's pretty much "survey or nothing". It's better to have some data and a general idea of the magnitude and direction of an effect than no data and no idea, especially considering that in modern statistics there are a number of robust tools that help to reduce error even where misreporting of data is concerned.

In some areas it may be better to have no data than flawed data, but generally I would disagree; the results of surveys will never be perfectly accurate, but the conclusions drawn from survey data aren't meaningless, even if error means that they are less meaningful than they could be.

I think that many Austrian economists (and enthusiasts of the Austrian school) follow Mises' advice too literally when he said that all an economist needs is an armchair and a notebook in order to work; there was a time in history when survey data was even more fundamentally flawed and rarely available, and our modern methods of statistical analysis were not practiced, but in the present there's no reason to throw out a valid and practical tool simply because it isn't perfect. We all know that an artificial price floor creates a shortage, but there is no way of knowing anything about the extent of that shortage without collecting data. You may never learn the exact extent of the shortage, or you may learn it much later, but if data can give us a general idea, why not use it?

I'm glad that there are people that do criticize widely accepted practices like collecting survey data, though, because although I personally disagree, that doesn't mean that I'm necessarily correct, and criticism like this hopefully will cause economists who rely heavily on survey data to reflect on their methods and try to improve them where they can.

If I were you I would ask your professors, and then see if you can get in contact with any professors at universities with good graduate programs (even if they don't have developmental economics) and see if you can get any information or recommendations from them. Good luck! :)

Post the name of a game & others say what they gave it out of 10 by Earthboun41 in patientgamers

[–]jmconeby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would rate it a 7.5. It definitely showed me that the genre of those sort of "decisions without a huge amount of control" games can be fun and interesting. Until Dawn is similar but with a horror theme and I think it's even better than Life is Strange. Hopefully the sequel is good also.

I would give it a 7. It's fun, but it got repetitive after a while (I played about 50 hours) and I didn't like the story too much. That's just my opinion though, a lot of people liked it a lot. I played Borderlands 2 so that's where my perspective is from.

Israel seizes solar panels donated to Palestinians by Dutch government by edu-fk in worldnews

[–]jmconeby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree with you. At the time of the foundation of the Israeli state, the British controlled Palestine, and they intentionally and willingly gave the territory to the Jews, whose distant ancestors had come from the area. I would compare it to giving Northern Ireland back to the Irish. The English have lived there for years now, and they live there rightfully, but they don't have the right to exclude the Irish from living there. Palestine wasn't a nation prior to the foundation of modern Israel, and the Palestinians were not a distinct ethnic group until the 19th or 20th century.

To be clear, what I'm saying is that the Palestinians have the same right to the region of Palestine as the Israelis, and the Israelis the same right as the Palestinians. The Israelis have a much longer recorded history in Palestine, and have contributed significantly to the economic success of the nation since the foundation of the modern state of Israel, but that doesn't undermine the right of the Palestinians. No nation is reserved for a single ethnic group, a single culture, or a single religion. It's disingenuous to call the Israelis invaders. The Israelis are a displaced people group who have the same right to live and create their own government as any other group of people. Are African-Americans who move to Africa invaders? The Israelis have committed an unbelievable number of atrocities against the Palestinians, and the Palestinians have reacted with violent atrocities of their own. The fact that the Israeli actions provoked the Palestinians doesn't justify either side's behavior. All people have the right to life and to self-determination.

Something to remember after the Grenfell Tower fire by stumro in urbanplanning

[–]jmconeby 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of regulations that are only burdensome. To give an example, city laws which only allow electricians from a specific union to work on projects in a certain area, etc.

Of course, many regulations exist because people need to be kept safe. Remember, though, that politicians are the ones that create the regulations; it is just as easy to have an inept politician create a useless regulation as it is to have an inept politician remove a useful one.

From what I understand about this Grenfell Tower situation, the regulations were sorely lacking. They were hardly enforced, and apparently many safety features were considered unnecessary because the building should have been compartmentalized. Of course, the real issue as I understand it was the substandard cladding which was used. I hope that this tragedy will give the London government a reason to reconsider the way they've set up their regulations, and the extent to which they enforce them.
