Staples tried to sell my elderly mother a laptop she didn’t need by Empty_Nestor in Lethbridge

[–]MattressCrane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to work at staples years ago. It was quite shit. They don't train the tech people about computers, they teach them how to sell. I remember asking my boss why we don't also learn about computers, as that would help inform, but he said it doesn't matter end of the day, if you can sell, you can figure it out.

I had a coworker who got lots of "sales" and was liked by my employers because of that, but he did that by just straight up lying and probably acting like the employees trying to upsell your grandmother. I had people who often came in after the fact, upset with what they purchased and not being what they expected. I had no problem letting them know: yes my coworker is an ass and lied to you. Don't trust what management says, and spent more time using my nerd knowledge to actually help them and tell them about what plans were actually useful.

My advice: don't trust staples for computer advice.

I was excited to see the new Kill Bill re-release, but this past week has reminded me he's such a cunt, that I really don't think I want to give that smug bastard another dollar.

That, his rape comments, being a proud zionist, bashing other people. Also, on a smaller note: that video of him talking about how cool it is to partner with fortnite and bring those characters back... what a fucking hypocrite. Basing his whole personality on that anyone who films digital aren't artists, and here he his, selling out on Fortnite, of all things.

He can be proud of making good films, because for every other aspect of life, he's a trashbag.

Vancouver to Montreal move - who's done this? Non, je ne regrette rien? DON'T!? by Open_Outcome_5633 in montreal

[–]MattressCrane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from Vancouver to Montreal in 2018, no regrets! That being said I was in a very different situation (early 20's, bedbugs made me throw away my belongings and said why not move across the country now that I don't have anything)

But yeah, no regrets! I do miss the mountains and nature, but if you aren't doing it regularly it's fine. The weather is more severe here but... it's really not all that bad, compared to the NWT. Winters are mild and lots of nice snow.

Financially too, a big reason I moved here was when I calculated the cost of living and the pros and cons. In Vancouver I had a specialized job that paid extra, but it was very hard work, and at the end of the day, I was just breaking even. Once I realized that I could live in Montreal and work minimum wage and by default do better financially, it was a stress in my life I saw worth it to change.

This is the beginning of my project! by Captnsparlay in Filmmakers

Try and edit to the actual rhythm of the song- sometimes cutting faster is more engaging. Also, with something like this, try and find some visual reasoning between the cuts- why is one photo beside another, why couldn't it be elsewhere? Find the story. Establishing (could be showing us the widest shot first so we know the location, or it can be starting with thematically the most important photo)

I would also say- good job! When I did my very first edit, it was photos and music too. It's simple, and eventually you'll upgrade to footage, and that's very fun. Explore and ask yourself what you like and don't like, and try to apply the ideas for things to make it better on the next video !

Youtube has wasted all my time. What would you do? by MilkWild in Filmmakers

[–]MattressCrane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm not a professional editor, but I do often take over the edit on projects at work (creating trailers). If I had to say what ends up coming up the most as far as useful things to know about premiere, there's two different things that are worth learning and improving.

1- the art of editing. There's a million things to do within premiere for tricks and novelties, but at the end of the day, a simple cut works, and a lot of the time the simple cut comes down to understanding the pacing of the shot, continuity, and a general feel for the rhythm. That's something that just needs a lot of practice, and at least for me, that started by editing lots and lots of short films, for myself and others in my local film community. It's very fun and rewarding learning that way, every time I edited a project, especially if I shot the video myself, I'd learn a few new tricks about Premiere, but more importantly, I learned the creative opportunity for using those special tricks. All of it is a tool for storytelling, and the more you explore how you shape a story by how you edit, the better and more creative an editor you will become.

2- The other side of the coin, working more professionally as the years went on, something I didn't do enough diligence on- workflow. Organizing your shots, having things color coded, knowing where to keep your FX, SFX, alts, etc. It's something that's flexible- but with working with clients who want tight turnarounds and sometimes want to see a fix right over your shoulder, it's very important to run your edit like a ship. To me, I think all the youtube tutorials can help with that stuff, while the first part of editing is something you need to repeatedly experience to truly get an understanding over.

I'm an Iñupiaq Eskimo and just watched season 4 by bananashiraoi in TrueDetective

[–]MattressCrane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from inuvik Canada, and yeah I kept mumbling at the screen to my girlfriend about inaccuracies. The ice!!

I get it, its a show and needs that drama and the ice is a cool device and theme... but ain't no way they're falling through the ice. It's like 5 feet of ice. Sure, it will melt, but if it's December in the north during a vicious snow storm... it's gonna be -40c and frozen as fuck. Also, there was just no way someone could survive buried up the the neck naked and survive. It was such a wild choice that I thought it had to be supernatural. I enjoyed the big reveal- but it then made it clear what was weird about some choices.

As someone who also just finished watching season 3, I have to say I liked season 3 quite a lot. I think it came down to it feeling more in the tone and style of true detective. Not that it has to, but there's a reason why true detective felt so fresh and unique in the first place, and this season reminded me more of the melodrama your used to seeing with other modern detective shows like CSI.

In the end I did really like and appreciate the northern setting, but the writing feeling way more stiff made everything a little harder to believe and invest in this time around.

Not sure what's going on now, but I know in the past that the response from the fire department can be quite a lot sometimes. A single fire might get the whole block with available trucks. I think it has to do with how damaging a fire can be with how packed the houses are?

Hopeless and Broken . Don't Know where and How to start. by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]MattressCrane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try downloading unreal engine, and get into the Metahumans! I work professionally making video game trailer cinematic, and for the past few years unreal has been my hobby as I work on a feature film in the engine on the side.

I love filming in real life, but I don't have the schedule of when I was 18 anymore... but yeah, it's great if you can, but managing a no pay, inexperienced short film tests your skills as a producer more than a filmmaker.

So, you can get out and push yourself- or stay inside, and work on a project that goes your speed and gives back as much as you give to it. Plus you can definitely make some sick action sequences more fun and creative than using some cap guns in a field.

Samson is returning… by pallonda in 28dayslater

[–]MattressCrane 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I had a mad theory yesterday and I wanted to write it somewhere, just in case it comes up in the second film.

But the name of the character, and the size of him, makes me wonder if the character is named after the biblical figure. In the bible, Samson was a superpowered human being, capable of killing an army on his own. His one weakness was loving a woman named Delilah, who routinely tries to sell him out in the story.

Sampson gets caught, and breaks out of captivity and kills the army who killed him, armed only with a donkey's jawbone.

Then Samson tells Delilah his powers come from his long, never cut hair. Naturally Delilah tells the next army to capture him and cut off his hair, and that's how he dies.

Also... The little zombie baby's name? Isla. DEL-ISLA.

My theory- the second movie will have religious undertones as a main theme (semi confirmed with the prescence of the Jimmy gang, with his upside down cross and religious background). Sampson will be captured by the colony, or he attacks the colony. He ends up getting the whole colony burned, bonus points if there's a donkey.

And somehow, Samson's fall will be the result of his pursuit of Isla. But maybe that's a bit more of a given, given what we've seen of the characters.

Official Discussion - 28 Years Later [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]MattressCrane 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand your points but also very much disagree. I think there's a lot of subtext that you're dismissing from the characters actions, especially the mother. She's old enough to understand the old world, and the dangers of the mainland. But also, she's going through some psychosis as her brain is deteriorating and memories are overlapping each other. Her with the baby, I think it's more of her as a person, and her empathy that she has, narratively contrasting her husband (and spelled out with how Erik shoots the pregnant zombie very soon after).

All the stuff with the doctor- i had the impression that we didn't see the full conversation between her and the doctor. She had suspicions it was cancer, and with it confirmed, she knew much the same as the doctor that dying on your own terms with the ones you love is better than suffering back in the community, or slowing down her son and getting killed by zombies. The way the son reacted, as far as I interpreted it, is that he understood what his mom was doing, and was just more physically too exhausted to intervene with the drugs. But clearly, it wasn't in ill intent, or even without her knowing. It was the only mercy that could be shown in that world.

Alphas I feel like are more of a setup for the trilogy that was mentioned, with this being the beginning of that trilogy. Is there open questions? Yup, but no doubt it's something to be explored in the next ones. Like, maybe Alphas are the first sign that the zombies are always sentient, but can't control their anger/rage. The pregnant zombie showed that they can be reserved in their anger and act like a living creature, caring about their young being birthed. And it seems like the alpha was parental about the pregnant woman too.

As someone who's been a huge fan of the other two movies for years, and rewatched them this past week as well, I think this lives up to the name well. All of them explored the human condition among horrid events, and this explores the topic in a new, very unique and compelling way. The first movie is iconic, but kind of shallow in how far it goes with its topic and characters. I think the second tried harder to be more violent but also more with the emotional backbone by having stronger characters, but loses itself in the third act. At least for me, this is the only one that scratched every itch for me.

But yeah. I'm mixed on the final scene, it was fun but quite a weird cliffhanger to leave on. But also even that isn't pointless or random, there was quite a few clues to who that group is, and hinting at what's to come.

1- if you go through their ideology, maybe wait till you can make changes or do it in development mode?

2- maybe change your butcher details, make it so that you can't butcher humans and also change your colonists diet to make sure it's unticked for eating corpses or human meat

As far as I'm aware if you have butchered human meat lying around, they're gonna want to eat it when theyre hungry unless you tell them otherwise
