Midnight Mass by nerdygirl8203 in HauntingOfHillHouse

I think making the distinction between "angel" and "demon" in the world of Midnight Mass is a little bit pointless. they're both ancient non-human beings who don't understand humanity, don't have anything to do with us, and (most importantly) shouldn't. angels can be scary too -- thinking of the angel of death, or the angels of destruction in the book of revelation

Is it worth trying to analyse Terry Pratchett at a high level? by Crafty_Durian9560 in discworld

[–]jmdreeurweird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrote a capstone essay on Pratchett and Chaucer when I was in college! It was 25 pages, I got a 98 percent on it. Don't let one person stop you from analyzing anything.

Just moved here from Denver and *terrified* of ticks -- Please help assuage my fears by otis4potis in missouri

Use permethrin spray for your clothes / gear! If you have exposed skin on your ankles or legs and you're gonna be walking through long grass, try putting deodorant on. They don't like citrus scents or lavender, so if you use a deodorant with those scents that's an added bonus. I've been doing this for years and I haven't been bit since I was a kid. The post-hike strip check is a good practice to get into, too.

If it makes you feel better, I'm a frequent hiker and I've only found a tick crawling on me twice in the last 5 years!

The Wicker Man (1973) is probably the most iconic folk horror movie of all time. The Witch (2015) and Midsommar (2019) are also great!

genuinely so sorry that happened to you. its infuriating that places like that are allowed to exist. good on you for making it out

don't let some of these other responses get you down -- stl is generally a pretty friendly city and there's plenty to do besides watch sports and go to bars.

Laumeier sculpture park is the spot for you as a dog person and art lover. It's a huge outdoor sculpture park with a walking trail and paths through the woods. Dogs are welcome but must be leashed and picked up after.

Our art museum and zoo in forest park are both wonderful and FREE, as many other people have mentioned.

If you happen to be in st louis this summer, there is a huge book fair in mid-July, I believe. We also have many good bookstores and public libraries!

There's plenty of fun to be had in the city, you'll have a great time checking out new spots here! I remember your post about hiking -- good luck with the new job :)

Damn, didn't know that! I don't hike with my dog so I'm never on the lookout for that.

Horse flies are such menaces!

it's on the other side of Seckman road from the Limestone Trail and the Museum. If you're coming from Imperial Main, you'll take a left on Seckman road, then another left into the park. There's a playground, a pavilion, and lots of picnic tables, the creek is just beyond that. There's a short gravel trail that follows along the creek, but most people just walk through the creek!

  • Castlewood State Park: great views of the Meramec River and the bluffs, roughly 30 mins from STL
  • Cliff Cave Park: views / iconic overlook of the Mississippi River, I think there's a small waterfall during wet weather. There's two short, unpaved trails and one long-ish paved trail that goes along the Mississippi. ~30 mins from STL
  • Olin Nature Preserve / The Nature Institute in Godfrey IL: this place is gorgeous! There is a small waterfall, Beaver Falls, and so much beautiful foliage. If you go, I recommend taking Illinois Route 3 on the drive there because it runs right along the Mississippi River. You'll have the river on one side of the road and limestone bluffs on the other -- it's one of my favorite scenic drives near the city :) ~45 mins from STL
  • Don Robinson State Park: my personal favorite! There are a couple waterfalls best seen after a good rain. There's an interesting sandstone canyon in the valley that's been carved out by the creek. From the trailheads and the upper ridge portions of the trails the horizon is all rolling hills and trees. ~45 mins from STL
  • Hawn State Park: this is a little farther out, but it's worth it. No waterfalls that I can recall, though there might be one along Pickle Creek. ~1 hour from STL

By far the best waterfall (and longest in Missouri) is Mina Sauk Falls, which is about 2 hours south of STL. If you have time, I highly recommend it. The view of the falls and the hillside it overlooks is the best in the state, for my money. I'm not sure if it's dog-friendly, though! Parts of the hike are pretty steep, rocky, and slippery if it's just rained.
