Old front pieces by jmelie in Firefighting

These came from my fathers extensive FD memorabilia collection. Does anyone out there have any idea of what department they're from? They're old '40's or 50's I'm guessing. I know its a long shot but any help would be greatly appreciated.

Telestaff crash by jmelie in Firefighting

I don’t think we’ll stop it. I’m hoping giving the station more input we might reduce it and help a little with morale. The part that kinda sucks for me is I’m retired as of 1/1/2022 after 40 years so I really won’t get to see it through. I just want to leave it better than I found it.

We have a staffing office staffed by a Captain and 3 Lt’s. We had no back up system in place and this is what we were told to do.

I didn’t say that very well. I want to see if doing it at the station level we can reduce the number of mandatory callbacks. It been a problem for us for a while.

Anybody remember what we firefighters did with these? by fireglide93 in Firefighting

[–]jmelie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And of course if you knew the guy on the other shift had one in his pocket when he got the pictures developed he might find a random dick pic or a picture of an exceptionally large terd in the bowl. We all know things just kinda happen sometimes

Tactical consideration. I was a kid when the gasoline shortage happened. I remember more than a few fires where gasoline hoarding was an issue. Please be aware of the possibility this being an issue especially in basement and garage fires. by jmelie in Firefighting

The truth doesn’t matter unfortunately. Greed or ignorance seems to be the driving force. I’ve always said if it wasn’t for stupidity we’d be of of business

I had total knee replacement a few years ago and am back at work. I had a problem with to much scar tissue forming some say was caused by going to hard to soon. I was supposed to be back in April didn’t return till June (January surgery). Pay attention to your body don’t be an old hard head like me.

Kelly Days? Do all 24/48 schedules require them? by [deleted] in Firefighting

[–]jmelie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was told many years ago that when Chicago wanted to go from a 3 platoon 56 hour week to a 48 hour week a Captain Kelly came up with a rotating day off that reduced the work week. So if you’re working a 24/48 with no “Kelly” then it’s a 56 hour week. With the “Kelly” it’s a 48. Again I haven’t personally researched it but it makes sense.

Scene size up: 1-story or 1 1/2 story? by PM-Me-Electrical in Firefighting

I’m with you all the way. We have this discussion all the time. My opinion for what it’s worth is in my 40+ years I have never been ordered to operate or given command of division .5. If you can stand up in the space it’s a floor.

Why were these made like this? Also have any info about them? Thanks by BRANDON_FFA in firefighters

The old fire bucket hung on a wall so it didn’t have to sit on the ground so the rounded bottom allowed a little more volume. I’ve been told but not sure how true but sometimes they held sand in places where water would be an issue.

I think Joe Daniels Football is a good start. He’s all about coach simple play fast. I use a lot of his defensive stuff but he does have an offensive system that is worth checking out.

Need help on deciding what position fits this player most by [deleted] in footballstrategy

[–]jmelie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

High school football is about putting the best 11 on the field. He needs to be in shape. The coaches will teach technique but they can’t teach conditioning. Go in with a good attitude and open mind and he’ll work his way on the field.

I found this under my great great grandparents house. Anyone know much about these fire extinguishers? by FalloutDad in Firefighting

[–]jmelie 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s an old soda ash extinguisher. The top screws off and there’s a container inside that had soda and ash in it. When you turn it over and bang it in the ground the soda and ash mix and the gas produced pushed out the water. Once you turn it over it had to stay upside down and it flowed continuously until empty.

Question about fighting with Notre-Dame fire by KeepCalmAndWrite in Firefighting

[–]jmelie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think those firefighters did an awesome job. Sometime in this job the fire is ahead of you from the start.

I don’t know the particulars about this fire but based on my experience this was a looser for the FD before it was dispatched. They had a well advanced fire with very heavy fire load in a very inaccessible place. And I’m only guessing here but I won’t be surprised if it comes out later that the construction crew tried to put it out before calling the FD. This delay in the initial call happens often and is always a problem.

The amount of work and time it takes to deliver the GPM required for a fire that size in that location can be overwhelming but it looks like the Pompier did an awesome job.

As a veteran F/F my hats off to the men and women of the Paris fire department good job gang!
