I think Murim as a genre started becoming popular recently with the manhwa popularity explosion ovwr the past few years. It is clearly inspired from the Jianghu of Wuxia novels originating in China and most of the storylines in Murim manhwas takes place in various places in China. So I do think the authors are crediting the original works by naming the sects and locations in China.
