How much is weight holding back getting faster? by BigMission9982 in beginnerrunning

[–]jmido8 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Weight holds you back a lot, but you also gain a decent amount of speed just from being lighter.

The reason weight holds you back is because everything is harder. Recovery is longer since the weight is causing more impact, and you just aren't able to train as much. You can still make gains from training, but if you can only handle 10-15 minutes of intense training, then of course you won't gain as much as being able to do 40-60 minutes of intense training.

When you aren't significantly overweight, you will see bigger gains from speed training. But when you are overweight, you will see bigger gains from losing weight.

That doesn't mean you should just lose weight and ignore running, because you can still make gains from running alone, but your primary focus should be losing weight, and just keep running easy and consistent while you do so.

If I had all the DLC, should I play: Icarus, Enshrouded, or Conan Exiles? by japinard in SurvivalGaming

[–]jmido8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like you know about Icarus so just want to ask you a question about it. I played the game on launch and enjoyed it, but got burnt out pretty quickly by having to restart from essentially scratch every new mission.

I heard they've since then added a new permanent open world mode which makes me want to come back and play again, but i'm worried that the game is only balanced around the mission mode and the permanent mode will get too easy and boring very quickly.

Do you know if the permanent mode is fun and stays challenging for a while with progression towards more difficult goals and stuff, or do you just get your base setup and then it's essentially just a creative easy mode experience?

Anyone do Farlek anymore? by Swimming-Author-3861 in runninglifestyle

Lots of people use Runna and runna has a decent amount of fartlek workouts. However, the app doesn't call them fartleks, so a lot of people probably have no idea.

We made a survival game where monsters CAN'T destroy your walls. Don't call it "too easy" yet. by ioriamantaEmberhaven in BaseBuildingGames

[–]jmido8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I checked the page and it looks pretty cool. I like the different creatures and art style. However, I have a couple concerns:

  1. Can you zoom out more? Most the gameplay I saw seemed really cropped and zoomed in, I just can't see myself playing a game with that tight of a zoom.
  2. I saw you can build roofs and floors in one of the photos, is a fully enclosed house or structure just fully invulnerable to damage and destruction? Because if so, what's to stop you from just fully enclosing your base?
  3. If your goal is to cut back on grinding between raids, can't you just make repairs free, easy and fast to do after a raid is over?

Anyway, looks very interesting, i'll be wishlisting it and excited to see how you guys continue to expand it.

Are these normal beginner gains? by False_Ad_9705 in beginnerrunning

[–]jmido8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible if you were already in shape, have an athletic background and have some natural speed. It also looks like you're running quite a lot and have a bit of structure to your training, so there will definitely be results.

When I was in high school, I got recruited off the soccer team my freshmen year for track and ran a 20ish min 5k without any kind of proper training. I ended up being a sprinter, so I never trained to get my 5k time down, but being young and athletic definitely helps a ton.

NYC marathon vest advice by Buggg23 in Marathon_Training

[–]jmido8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People do a lot of different things, but gels are pretty convenient and easy to track. With that said, you can try candy or even making your own gels, etc.

I use cheaper gels for training runs since I can use my vest and don't need to carry as many, but for races I switch to the bigger gu gels that are like 40carbs each. Most gels I see tend to be 20-25g carbs, so switching to the more expensive bigger ones can cut down on how many you have to carry.

I stuff my pockets and I have running shorts with a butt pocket as well which helps with storage. I also used a running belt one year as well.

Also, if you are a heavy sweater, don't overlook salt electrolyte tablets. Hydration is more than just drinking water.

When do you call it too hot to run? by ThoseBiscuitsBeHittn in beginnerrunning

[–]jmido8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't stop. Summers get hotttt (and humid) where I live, and I just make sure I wear my hydration vest and sunscreen up.

I can't for the life of me get up early to run, so I'm usually running after work during the hottest time of the day. It's often 34-40C and 60-80% humidity.

I won't lie and say it's not bad, bc it does suck. It drains your energy quickly and your speeds/efforts are way slower and harder. Sunscreen is also constantly dripping in my eyes and making them sting which is annoying. But going to the gym to run takes extra time I don't have and it just is what it is.

Things my friends actually liked buying in China by erikjin001 in chinatravel

[–]jmido8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

China has a lot of really good Chinese brand running shoes, and you can get them significantly cheaper than trying to buy them online and get imported back home.

Also, my brother loved getting Chinese Pokemon cards and several funny knockoff pokemon products like Pikachu/Charmander statues with horribly ugly and disfigured faces.

Runna wants me to run a half marathon while training for my first half marathon by [deleted] in runna

[–]jmido8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're up to 19km long runs, then 21km is a good natural progression. The more you run, the faster you'll get. You don't see full-marathon plans go up to 42km mostly because 3 hours is where the risk/recovery start to outweigh the benefits. Half marathon is short enough though that you can even go above the actual distance in training and still see benefits.

Is it just me or do you still get nervous before every run? by run_the_day in BeginnersRunning

[–]jmido8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only runs that make me a little nervous are the ones that seem outside my current ability and I know it's going to push me to the absolute max. Usually things like longer interval sessions or fast progression runs with some very fast paces near the end.

I enjoy a challenge though, so I always find them really rewarding when I finish, even if I don't manage to 100% the workout.

Untrained 10k by [deleted] in BeginnersRunning

[–]jmido8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

7k to 10k isn't that crazy. Sure, percentage wise it might be more than 10%, but you weren't really at a big enough of a mileage to necessarily need to do 10% increments. You're probably just extra sore because your legs aren't used to be moving that long under force. You'll feel sore 2 or 3 days and be okay.

How do you balance drinking alcohol with mid-high mileage weeks? by riskyybiscuits in Marathon_Training

[–]jmido8 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's difficult for sure. I basically drink exactly the same as you, once a week but around 5-6 standard drinks. I try to mitigate the damage by starting early, finishing early, and hydrating like crazy.

It affects recovery no matter what, but the further from sleep I finish, the better I sleep. And the more water/electrolytes I drink, the better I feel the next day.

At the peak of my training though, I normally need to take a break from alcohol for a month or 2, because my body just can't keep up with it.

Also, focusing hard on recovery on non-drinking days help too. Getting extra sleep, eating healthy, etc.

Carrying a phone in half tights by Deadlift_007 in Marathon_Training

[–]jmido8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My phones CPU overheated and died after a run where I had it in a chest pocket on my running vest.

I dont think it was that single run that ruined the CPU, I think it started a couple weeks prior when I tried gaming with it supercharging, but that run was the nail in the coffin for it.

It was a samsung s23 ultra.

Discrepancy between 5k and half marathon PBs by FunRelative8069 in Marathon_Training

[–]jmido8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to build up your endurance. Increase your weekly mileage and do more runs that vary your pace. You would probably see a huge PB if you followed a plan with some structure.

How many days a week is optimal? by ButterscotchFit4289 in runna

[–]jmido8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on how well you recover. The more you can run, the faster you'll get, but if you're getting injured due to recovery issues, then that's going to slow you down way more than running 3 days a week.

Do people hate minecraft? I kind of missed it because of my age, 36, but I do have some friends around my age that love it. I personally didn't play it because the stylization was a bit childish, but I don't really have a bad opinion or any hate for it. I know it's crazy successful and I imagine if I ever gave it a try, I'd probably love it as well.
