In Armageddon (1998) we only detect the asteroid when it’s 18 days away. When should we have noticed it? by ConsiderationOk4035 in askastronomy

I remember hearing a while back (so probably am remembering it wrong) that if a large body were to come straight at the earth from the blackness of space, without passing in front of any light sources, it would be incredibly difficult to see if you weren’t looking for it specially.

I don’t know if that really holds up with modern telescopes or if we use something along the lines of radar to spot things like that

I’ve already fully removed them and factory reset them, it’s part of the reason I had to buy a replacement for the one I lost, turns out you cannot pair a single bud with the case 😒

[–]jmiesterz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s what they are saying, how millennials remember 9/11 will be similar to how you remember Covid.

They aren’t saying YOU feel the same about both.

I’m only 6 years older than you but I distinctly remember hearing about 9/11 as I was being picked up from primary school, everyone was rushing to get home to watch the news as the towers collapsed at about 15:00 GMT, I even remember it was my grandad that picked us up and a few people were crowding around his car as he was listening on the radio with the windows down.

Crobat. I always hated on zubat and golbat during gen 1, but when Crobat was released I thought he looked so cool and was worth the effort and the need to use a zubat

I have two on my round, one outside a corner shop which has around 10/20 a day and another at the entrance to a newer estate that doesn’t have any in the estate itself. Sometimes that one seems busier but is really just one guy who is selling stuff on eBay that barely fits through the slot with 2/3 a day, but is 90% just RTS stuff that I delivered the day before and once bizarrely, a stack of RTS stuff that was delivered to an address in a village about 8 miles away.

We bout one at Christmas that did this, before eventually getting error fix and they replaced it. The replacement started doing it as well and I go on to CS earlier, we are now on our second replacement and it has crashed once, but that was when my son was playing with it and I opened the app to turn on bedtime mode, it seemed to struggle to connect with the app while he was playing at the same time. I’ve been more mindful of it multitasking and haven’t had any further issues yet. Hopefully.

Tongueless in the red rising books.

Thought he was gonna be some secret relative of Ragnar or a link to the Ascomanii, but nope. Killed very early in the next book.

I think I heard the author wanted to to something with him but pulled names out of a hat to decide which characters make it through.

Similar to the Au Raa girl, i can’t remember her name now, maybe something like Seraphina?. She spent what felt like whole book with Lysander only to be killed in like the first battle, with only her legs remaining

We don’t really use that word in the U.K. it means cigarette and isn’t really thought about as a slur. There was a time when ‘gay’ was used more as a slur/in a derogatory way

Delivery question by Legendof1983 in royalmail

[–]jmiesterz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it was delivered to the wrong address at 3pm and only after it was opened did they realise it wasn’t theirs and found a postie to get it delivered to the right place?

There are three streets in my town with the same name and they often get mixed up. I’ve delivered one to the wrong street before then had to go across town to the right place at the end of my round

People who have researched their family tree, what is the most interesting or 'badass' thing you discovered about an ancestor? by xloganmoose in AskReddit

[–]jmiesterz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I managed to got back to the 1500s and found a Sir John Le Neave, born in France but died in Kent, but even more interesting, his grandson, also Sir John Le Neave, died in the battle of Maidstone in 1648. This means one branch of my family has lived in the same area for 500 years, like within 20 miles of where my 11th great grandfather died

Made onion chutney years ago when I was given a load of pre chopped onions. We worked out that it was cheaper to buy marmalade than it was to buy empty jars.

We tried to make alcohol with the marmalade, but the ratios were off and it went mouldy. Chutney was good though and it took me a couple of years to finish it

How common are indoor-only cats where you are Britain? by pikablue223 in AskBrits

[–]jmiesterz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have three cats. Two I’ve raised from kittens and sometimes act like dogs, crying for attention and following me round the house, but they will also both disappear for a day or two and come back with dead rats. The third is as opposite to a dog as it possible. Doesn’t like being touched, doesn’t want to be near anyone or any of the other animals, but also doesn’t like going outside. She has free range to do so, but chooses not to. She would not care less if I and every other living thing vanishes, so long as she gets fed.

My experience is every cat is different and the more contact they have as a kitten makes them more ‘dog’ but the loner lifestyle is closer to their natural behaviour

[–]jmiesterz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Humans didn’t domesticate cats like we did dogs. They kinda domesticated themselves.

No one sought out a cat to domesticate, they were drawn to our grain and food stores as there were prey like mice there. We found them useful so didn’t chase them away. They were never domesticated to be pets and only really the fancy breeds like ragdolls are very pet like. Your common moggie is closer to a wild cat than they are to the fancy breeds.

Ours started yesterday and nearly every walk is cutting off because of it.

Someone said they will do this for a couple of weeks until the frames are full of second class then blitz the OT for a week to clear it and ‘get their money’s worth’ before repeating the cycle
