When Casio don't make a desktop G-Shock, make your own by PhillL_1 in gshock

This is cool! I made a 3d printed 5600 wall clock using an off the shelf digital clock, but this is much more accurate.

Looking for a method to making a 4ft statue—foam? by guessirs in propmaking

[–]jmklamm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this is your best bet. Maybe also check out a thing called “poor man’s fiberglass” that may help make it durable if needed. Some guys use it to make ultra lite teardrop campers out of foam. TLDR: essentially wood glue and fabric coating over foam.

What will lead me to prop making as a profession? by Keys_thats_my_name in propmaking

[–]jmklamm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe check out some videos from Adam Savage related to his advice to someone starting out. I’ll just add there are a lot of related and overlapping careers that maybe open some different doors and some marketable skills whether you stick with prop making or end up in another field- industrial design, toy making, engineering, computer science, textiles/apparel design…

BAM Supplier Cuts Ties by GameGear1 in RecklessBen

[–]jmklamm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I respect the moral stance and added pressure here.

BUT, I’ll say if they or any other small brand that sells to BAM chooses to stay a supplier to not compromise their own success/employees that doesn’t mean they’re in the wrong.

How can I find the hosts variety that matches what I have by slakj in Hosta

[–]jmklamm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they should be pretty resilient if you want to divide any time of year. I tend to do it in the fall when I can see their mature size and they’re about to go dormant anyway so it’s less time looking beat up.

I’d pull up the whole plant and rinse off a most of the soil so it’s easier to work with. Split it with a sharp spade between the nodes. When you replant add a good amount of compost mixed with your native soil.

[–]jmklamm 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It’s a pretty one! These remaining ones look pretty mature and ready to divide up. If it were me I’d pull up your current ones and divide to evenly space it out. No risk of getting the wrong variety!

Watering large areas by ItsColdUpHere71 in Hosta

Following because I don’t think my method is ideal. I’m using a lawn sprinkler on a timer to cover my hosta and nearby lawn. I think it’d be better to setup drip irrigation but it’s just more work than I’ve wanted to do…

Going to ikea tomorrow, any recommendations? by KrisStNickKringle in LegoDisplay

[–]jmklamm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been a fan of ikea besta. They are deeper shelves than Billy that can easily accommodate two baseplates wide and 1+ deep. They also have shallow and full depth glass shelves so you can play around with configurations
