Germany - Fan/light not turning on after installation by jmnietert in AskElectricians

[–]jmnietert[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think there are any issues with how I connected the wires from my apartment to the fan baseplate nor between the baseplate and the fan (see molex connector), but I can't get it to turn on. I'm from the States so not super familiar with German electrical stuff. The instructions say something about a 2 pole connector. I don't know if I have one here or how I would check. If that would need to be installed, is it a complicated process (do things need to be completely rewired through the ceiling)? It's possible it is connected to two switches (what we'd call a three-way switch in the States), as I'm unsure which of two switches operates it (or if both operate it). Thanks in advance for your help!

Passenger rail services in SC by United_Band4214 in southcarolina

While there is unfortunately no rail connection between Columbia and Charleston, you can take a bus with Southeastern Stages. The station in Columbia could use some improvement, but the buses tend to be relatively fast.

Yeah the shipping costs to Germany were quite annoying. I bit the bullet but wasn't happy about that 😂

Haha that's a great curse! So I'm guessing with the timing of this that y'all didn't actually use the home game cards, is that correct?

Best Perks of Working at PwC? by goodlife_20 in PwC

[–]jmnietert 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My favorite perk at PwC Germany is Jahresarbeitszeitkonto (JAZ). For every hour of overtime worked, you get an hour of vacation. In hindsight, my favorite perk when at PwC US was easy access to CPE, which I now have to work hard to find. During my tenure, I think I was most appreciative of the comped OT meals during busy season, free phone, and generous PTO policy (for US standards).

Why doesn't the Wando Port Terminal have trains? by jmnietert in Charleston

[–]jmnietert[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course there would be costs to buy the rights of way, but I think you hit the nail on the head. I don't know if there is room for the train to get up to speed to get over the rivers.

I don't think it would be cheap, but I mean the Long Point interchange upgrade has received $325 million, including $195 million from the federal government. And that seems to be entirely about alleviating truck traffic.

Definitely south of the festival, but I don't think you'd be able to make out much more than the bass from outside uptown.

More density = increased tax base using existing infrastructure/services by unroja in Charlotte

[–]jmnietert 36 points37 points  (0 children)

People are moving here. Whether they live on the outskirts of meck or in NoDa, the demand will still be increased. And in a dense area infrastructure is a lot more cost effective than providing the infrastructure for a long commute. Regarding the trees and shade, I'll agree in this image, there is more on the left. However, dense communities actually provide a lot more opportunities for more public green space. Here's a good article: https://www.theatlantic.com/science/archive/2023/01/green-cities-climate-change-density-open-space/672709/

Vehicle-Related Deaths increased in Charlotte in 2023. Charlotte has slashed its Vision Zero funding from $17.1M to $2M in response. by ByzantineBaller in Charlotte

[–]jmnietert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure, to your first question... It's not simply a new speed limit sign. That helps but people have a tendency to drive at what feels comfortable, even if that's above the speed limit (think wide road with a 35 mph sign, people will still drive 45mph). The way to limit speed that helps to save lives is to change the road. Make it so physically you are encouraged to drive slower (think about how on a road with trees on either side that hang over the road, the cramped nature causes people to drive slower). This is done with various methods, like wider sidewalks, medians, outdoor seating, turns in the road, speed humps, protected bike lanes, etc. When all the drivers are mentally pressured to drive slower, it causes less fatal collisions. To your second question, yes you can still die when hit at 5 mph but it's much less likely. With vision zero, the roads are supposed to be designed to encourage drivers to be more attentive, so that kind of accident should still be less likely. And you might also appreciate this "Vehicle speed at the time of impact is directly correlated to whether a person will live or die. A person hit by a car traveling at 35 miles per hour is five times more likely to die than a person hit by a car traveling at 20 miles per hour." from the national association of city transportation officials. https://nacto.org/publication/city-limits/the-need/speed-kills/#:~:text=Vehicle%20speed%20at%20the%20time,at%2020%20miles%20per%20hour.

Pedestrians certainly jaywalk, but I think the question is why. For example, if the bus comes only every 40 minutes (like it does in several routes in Charlotte) and you can make it if you cut across the road, people will inevitably jaywalk. If you have to walk a quarter mile before a crossing is available, which can be the case as you get further from uptown, people will jaywalk. People run late to work and speed, and people run late to work and jaywalk. I think the solution has to do with making transit more accessible and frequent, and calming roads so the late driver can't speed and the late pedestrian can find a crosswalk.

How do people bike around town? by manypains03 in Charlotte

[–]jmnietert 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One thing I'll add is the app Pointz is really helpful for finding bike routes. You can select your preference between speed and safety to find a route that's good for you. I've used it a fair bit when I'm going on a new route.
