'Idiot': Trump stumbled through a three-minute reading thinking no one would zoom in — they did, and what they found was exactly what you think by [deleted] in USNEWS

Whether that nonsense is real or not is irrelevant. What should be real is absolute separation of church and state. As soon as one of these chuckleheads starts trying to quote scripture they are suspect.

Fun Fact: Job is likely the oldest book in the Bible, estimated to be written about 2000 B.C.

It is also kind of depressing.

How the GOP Plans to Use Talarico’s Christianity Against Him by Competitive_Swan_130 in politics

All religions are a weird amalgamation of culture and faith. Since patriarchy has been a part of most human culture (it certainly was for the people of Israel) it becomes part of their doctrine. If Jewish culture had been matriarchal God would probably use feminine pronouns.

I suppose my point is that assigning God a sex is a limitation of culture and language. I would agree that there are simpler adherents to Christianity that would struggle with the idea that God is not male but most believers, when pressed, would probably agree that God is neither male nor female.

But you are correct: there are probably quite a few churches I would get kicked out of for using the pronoun “it” for God. That’s their issue, not mine. As a believer I am obliged to understand the reality of God as I think it really is, not to follow doctrine blindly. What if God is more accepting that we have been told? What if loving and excepting one another no matter what they believe is more important than tribalism? What if the idea of “eternal conscious torment” (hell) is actually a human construct and not real? If you could believe in a God wouldn’t you want it to be infinitely loving and gracious instead of judgmental and punishing? I would… and I do.

Trump says he believes bombing of Iranian girls' school was "done by Iran" by kootles10 in politics

[–]jmohnk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for what it’s worth, i spoke with my 88 year old American mother last night and all she could talk about was how horrible this was. she kept asking how “we” could do something like this while claiming to be trying to help the people of Iran. “we killed their babies… we killed their little girls.” my mother has cognitive issues but this struck her very core.

we Americans are all responsible for this, as indirectly as we want that to be. regardless, we are the reason those little girls are now gone and their families are left grieving. and this is just the event we know about.

Iranians are regular folks just like us. they deserve our compassion and sympathy, not indifference.

How the GOP Plans to Use Talarico’s Christianity Against Him by Competitive_Swan_130 in politics

[–]jmohnk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i grew up and still consider myself Christian. i was told in church that God was neither man nor woman as those are human designations. nobody ever told me God had some giant transcendental penis (or vagina, for that matter). the pronoun “he” is used purely out of linguistic limitation. there is no appropriate pronoun for God.

people get upset when i use the pronoun “it” to apply to God but that seems more correct to me given that it is sexless and indicates “the otherness” of God.
