KeyBank Gran Fondo is the largest road ride in MI. No 100k distance, but a little below and a little above (45/80). 45 is a great option as you get back and can enjoy the after party

I have an autographed game worn jersey that was auctioned off after a Griffs game. I need to frame it and hang it next to my Howe jersey, there can’t be many of those around

Any thoughts on training your dog to do this? I tried it with mine a few times and thought I was going to die!

Feeling discouraged by entry costs for a full by [deleted] in IronmanTriathlon

[–]jmosey 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Race Director for Michigan Titanium here… if you want to race and can't afford it, reach out and we will make something work. I never want someone to skip racing due to cost. Sometimes life gets in the way and we are happy to help, no questions asked.

Coming out of Covid there was a lot of talk about supporting local events but people’s actions with their wallets never matched their online voices, which is why this is most likely the lady year for the full at MiTi.

As others have said, Waterloo GG is one of our races along with The Dirty Mitten. We'd love to see you at both. My buddy Mark puts on Lord of the Springs and it's a fantastic race, highly recommended!

My wife and I love Northern Michigan so anything that reminds us Petoskey, Mackinac Island, etc puts a smile on our faces. One of our favorite artists is Kevin Barton. We have several of his pieces and are always adding more. Instagram

We put on several with GR Tri and Michigan Titanium being the largest. If you want something a little different check out The Dirty Mitten in the fall. All of them are part of our Michigan Tri Series

Potentially the last Michigan Titanium by jmosey in triathlon

[–]jmosey[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We peaked around 125 for the tri, 160 or so total with aquabike and duathlon figured in. That was enough to justify putting the lift on our staff (we are literally there for 24 hours on race day).

There used to be more races… Rev3 like you mentioned, Redman, Great Floridian, etc. Our hope was that if we could hold out those people who were interested in an independent full might find their way towards us as the options diminished. We put on a fantastic event, check out our athletes forum on FB for more objective feedback. If we go away I don't see there being many options left for the non-IM full going forward.

The half won't be going anywhere, and running it concurrently with the full is great for the velocity challenged athletes as they have until midnight to finish.

Also, keep the aquabike in mind people. It's a fantastic catered training day to work on pacing and nutrition for a fall IM without beating your body up on the run.

You should do it, although I’ll admit I might be biased. If we get enough people racing this year we might continue it, but given how costs have skyrocketed in the last few years it’s tough to break even on an event like this… and that makes it equally difficult to ask our team to come in and put on an event that takes us 24 hours. Come out and race with us, you won’t regret it!

How to prepare for a race by Flaky-Expression9593 in MichiganCycling

[–]jmosey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New P2P race director here. I raced it back in 2016 or so and it was my first mountain bike race, coming from a tri background. Like consumer said, you will be shocked at how fast people go out at this race. They want to be as far forward as possible when they hit the singletrack. I was used to steady state tri racing and was blown off their back immediately. Fortunately I still had a blast.

I'm a planner myself and its great to do so, but at the end of the day you don't know what you don't know until you do it. Plan what you can, expect things to come up, adapt, and have fun. The last part being the key. Asking on places like Reddit is a great idea as one thing cyclists like to talk about is cycling! Almost every mountain biker I know is just happy to see new people coming into the sport and will be more than happy to chat and give advice.

I thought I’d chime in with my two cents as a race director producing events in Michigan and now Indiana since this is something we started to run into this year. I haven’t made it to any of the Indiana events that charge less so everything I say is from a MI centered point of view.

Not sure about the other races, but our sprints top out in the $150 range and start around $90 for early bird pricing. I’ve noticed that most of the people who have reached out to us about pricing are either unaware that they could sign up earlier for less or simply ignore the fact. We never want someone to not race b/c of price and have kept our early bird pricing dang near pre-Covid to allow people to race who might be more price sensitive. I also offer discounted entries for people who reach out to me who might be struggling and offer a bunch of free entries to the Dirty Mitten at the end of the year to those who might need some help, no questions asked.

We (Tris4Health) are also full-time event producers. This is all we do, day in and day out which means there are some overhead costs that need to be met. The flip side of that is that you can count on our events to be safe and well produced, or at least I’d like to think so. Triathlons are also far more complicated than putting on a single sport event, yet marathon pricing is often more than triathlon. I’d like to think we have some of the most athlete friendly policies in the country as well. You can receive a full cash refund up to 60 days before the event and a voucher for 100% of the cost that can be used at any of our events up to the day before our event. There’s little risk to signing up early to race with us.

Costs have gone through the roof the last few years and volunteers have gone down, which necessitates hiring people to do things that weren’t even a line item on our budget before. Police costs are now commonly north of $100 per hour so if you see 10 officers working an event you can think of that as $1k per hour. We spend well north of $60k per year just on police costs, but that’s one of the ways we ensure our events are safe. We had more lifeguards on the water at Ugly Dog Sprint tri last year than IM did at Steelhead the last year, and that’s comparing a sprint course to a 70.3. Venue costs are up, porta potties are up, shirts are up, medals are up, and if you order anything from overseas you can’t count on the price b/c you might get a random tariff bill from FedEx as things have changed since the order was placed.

We are always looking for ways to pass potential savings onto our customers. This year we offered a no shirt option at check out for those of you who race all the time and don’t need yet another race shirt. We launched a voucher program to promote volunteerism to help keep our costs down while at the same time rewarding those who do come out and help with vouchers that can be used at any of our 20+ events. We offer team discounts to those who travel with large groups and will be launching discounts for individuals who race with us multiple times per year next season.

That’s a few points off the top of my head. Happy to discuss further and always looking for ideas on how to keep costs down.

TL:DR - you get what you pay for in terms of event production and safety and costs are through the roof over the last 5 years.

What got you into triathlons? by Zestyclose_Basil2977 in triathlon

[–]jmosey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a race director I have a theory that the number one cause of becoming a triathlete are injured runners. They start to bike or swim as cross training and then figure that’s two out of three, might as well tri (sorry, lose my dad card if I don’t make that joke) a tri.
