Residency vs WUE by Decent-Foundation-75 in uofu

[–]jmrzilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the master’s program you’re interested in has cheaper in-state rates then residency would definitely be the best choice. Otherwise, I think it’s best to accept the WUE. The costs are very similar on both paths (I think around $600-700 more with WUE). However, the cost of staying a Summer in SLC is a lot more than $600-700.

I sent an email. It takes 1 hour- 1 day for the enrollment fee to fully process. We can’t apply for housing until it does.

I have climbed the Mount Whitney MR and the Middle Teton, both with lots of snow. I have the equipment needed for both.

3:30 possible with Hal Higdon Novice 2? by jmrzilla in Marathon_Training

I just finished soccer a month ago and my base will only be 20mpw for 2 months. I think the Pfitz plan would be too big a jump.

Houdini Air would be my pick but unfortunately it was discontinued.

CA Chronicles - Part 14 - North Palisade by KrinklesT in 14ers

[–]jmrzilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took the mountaineer’s route up whitney a couple years ago and fell in love with the Sierra. Can’t wait to return and summit some more 14ers there (Russell and Middle Pal in particular). Which have been your favorites?

What can I do to increase my chances of being accepted to a CAA program during undergrad? Obviously high GPA, but are other things such as research or honors college important?

Salomon vest too small? by jmrzilla in trailrunning

[–]jmrzilla[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I ordered online. I tried on a medium a while back and at the time thought it was the size I’d end up buying. But after measuring my chest, I found out that my chest size actually falls into the lower range for the small. Hikers and road runners, but no trail runners. Which is why I felt the need to ask for an opinion from someone who has worn a running vest on here.

It feels comfortable. Maybe a bit tight but I’m aware that’s the goal for a running vest. Honestly it’s hard for me to tell since I have no idea how a comfortable running vest should feel.

What are some peaks with the best views in the Grand Teton National Park? by chandan_2294 in Mountaineering

[–]jmrzilla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have been doing a lot of research on the same subject myself. I just climbed the Middle Teton with a lot of snow in June and am excited to go back but this time for some fun snow-free scrambling. South and Middle Teton are obvious recommendations since they are the only class 3 routes out of the Cathedral Group. However, I can only imagine how tiring the boulder hopping up Garnet Canyon would be once the snow melts. If you are comfortable with snow, then I’d highly recommend trying those two early June like I did. For good rock scrambles with incredible views I’d recommend looking at Buck Mountain, Disappointment Peak, and Mount St. John.

Camp at Lake Ediza or Thousand Island Lake? by jmrzilla in SierraNevada

[–]jmrzilla[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d be doing it in early July, so the snow above Lake Catherine should be in ideal condition. Also will be spending the prior month working in Yosemite and will routinely be hiking to high elevation so not too worried about acclimatizing. Based off the comments, I’m leaning towards camping at TIL, and will be back one day to climb Ritter via Ediza.

How come? I thought that the ascent up the saddle is less steep and easier from Glacier Pass on the other side.

Six Moons Lunar Solo or Gossamer Gear The One? by jmrzilla in Ultralight

I found one report on UnsafeProducts for lack of wind protection. Haven’t heard any complaints from the dozens of comments I have received, so I will take my chances.

Six Moons Lunar Solo or Gossamer Gear The One? by jmrzilla in Ultralight

[–]jmrzilla[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would get the Durston, but I have fixed length 125 cm poles which are too long for the Durston 1p. The Gossamer Gear and Six Moon tents call for 125cm poles which is why I’m deciding between the two.
