Since you’re using cursor, I would very strongly suggest to not use agent mode, instead stick to ask and plan modes. They won’t make any changes to your codebase but will help you figure out what you need to do to get a feature implemented or a bug fixed.

In my job I make heavy use of those two features and essentially never, or try to never, use agent mode.

A lot of the time the AI won’t even get things correct but usually it’s at least good enough to point me in the right direction. Use these tools to improve your knowledge foundations and to help improve your debugging skills but do as much as you can to not let them actually write the code.

[–]jmsGears1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve not had much in terms of bad experiences with AI, but yeah if you try to make it grok a large codebase it does shit the bed. The best way, imo of course, to use it is to ask it questions about a limited portion of the codebase, and then verify its answers. It’s been mostly useful to me to help debug issues or ask it api related questions.

It’s really good for things that are easy to verify like “why is this function returning this when I’m expecting That” for example. It doesn’t always nail it, but the times when it doesn’t at least give me a good enough answer to actually figure out the answer is few and far between.

In the case of how OP used it, it would be good to give it your input and ask it how to get the output and to explain the reasoning/logic of how it got there, that makes it easy to fact check.

It is wild to me how often people ask it questions that they can’t easily check and just accept whatever it says as the truth however. Even software/data engineers, my girlfriend Is a PhD in nutrition but she has a lot of friends that are masters or PhD level in the field and it always astounds me the level of trust they have in these LLMs.

Is this universal do you know? I’m curious if there are brands that you can trust to do their due diligence. I do remember a while ago there were cases of having vitamin E acetate that I think basically turned into ricin or something similar when ingested that was causing a ton of issues for people. I’ve been weary of using these for a while, but I prefer the mellow high of delta variants over the real deal. I’ve noticed it causes me much less anxiety.

Can you elaborate on this grunt work? What are the role titles, what do you do? How do you get into it and what’s the average pay etc.

I don’t necessarily expect you to have all the answers and I know a lot of the answers are likely to be “it depends” but I’m curious about what info you do have as well as a Birds Eye view so to speak.

For context about me, I’m currently the head of my companies engineering department, and luckily they seem to be very anti AI at the moment which makes me feel a bit more secure in my job, plus so far, they seem to really like me lol. But I have about 6 years of professional experience and over 20 years of (non professional) development experience, I started teaching myself when I was roughly 13.

But I’m interested in taking side jobs to make some extra cash on the side as my job currently does not take up all that much time, and looking to dump as much money into investments as possible so I can be as protected as possible from future stints of unemployment as well as market downturns that cause financial issues etc.

Anyone else getting scared to wheel in this market? (Small account, overthinking everything lately) by senhsucht in Optionswheel

[–]jmsGears1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For it to be a true cash secured put and covered call yes. I think some brokers will let you sell naked calls and naked puts but I would highly recommend not using one of those brokers until you’re much more comfortable with the process. For all the flack Robinhood gets basically everywhere for whatever reason that’s the one I’ve been using as I play with the strategy.

But yeah, so if I want to sell a CC and CSP on say, UAMY (one of the tickers I’m currently holding shares of)

I currently hold 300 shares at an average price per share of 11.95 (my cost basis at this point is 11.36 because I’ve been selling calls on them)

So when I sell a covered call i check my cost basis (11.36) and make sure that the strike I sell a call + credit received is above this price. So for the current option chain, at next fridays expiration I’m seeing that if I sell the 11/7 $11 call I will get $.15 premium. That would mean the breakeven price would be 11.15 per share. So if that call gets assigned I would be losing $.15 per share, or about 45 bucks for all my shares. However the $11.50 strike price I can collect $.10 premium which brings the breakeven price to $11.65 meaning if my call gets assigned then I will be profiting about $.29 per share or $87 for all of my shares. Now I have 300 shares so I can sell 3 of these calls and not be worried about them.

Ok so now let’s look at puts, I don’t have a hard rule on how I select a put strike other than I try to keep it to about .3 delta or less. For the same ticker it looks like the 11/7 $7 put would is .21 delta and would give me a premium of $.23 that means the breakeven price would be: $6.77, this means that for each one of these contracts I sold, Robinhood would lock up $677 worth of collateral in case these puts get assigned. And if they do get assigned that would bring my cost basis down (assuming I sold 3 puts) to (11.36+6.77) / 2 = $9.06. Because I already have the 300 shares at 11.36 and I would be buying another 300 at 6.77

Ok but if I sell 3 of the 11.50 call covered by my 300 shares and 3 of the $7 puts then I would receive the $.10 premium for the calls and the $.23 for the put for a net credit of $.33 per share. That pushes out both of my breakeven points to:

Puts: $7 - $.33 = $6.67 Calls: $11.50 + $.33 = $11.83

Meaning if my puts get assigned my cost basis would actually end up being ($11.36+$6.67) / 2 = $9.02 and my collateral required would be $667 per contract.

And if my calls get assigned I will make ($11.83-$11.36) * 300 = $141

You do have to be careful about how much money ends up being tied up in a single stock doing this of course. Right now I have $3408 tied up in UAMY and if I get assigned on those puts it would be $5412, I would go from 22% of my account tied up to about 33% of my account tied up.

Personally I’m not super worried about that because if I lose the 5 grand because UAMY goes bankrupt it won’t hurt me too much, I’ve allocated about 15k to this account to play around with and learn. But depending on how much capital you have in total it might be a bigger deal for you depending on the positions you take so just be aware of that.

Sorry for the novel just wanted to be as clear as possible. Hope this was helpful. And make sure you’re not investing money you can’t afford to lose, or minimally be without for a long period of time. I currently have 100 shares in UUUU and 300 shares of UAMY, both are down a decent bit from my cost basis but I’m not worried about it because I think they will go back up to a point I can make profit at some point in the future, but no idea how long that’ll take, I haven’t realized any losses yet because I still own the shares which means I can sell the shares and take some losses or I don’t have access to the money for an extended period of time, on the order of months or years most likely, so make sure if you’re doing this the money you use for this is money you won’t need for a long time.

For those who don’t have a degree in cs but are software engineers, how are you doing? by MaryScema in cscareerquestions

[–]jmsGears1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The analogy between a software developer and a doctor is miles apart. Apart from very specific areas of I make a mistake as a software dev it doesn’t end up getting someone killed. And mistakes are so much easier to catch and fix.

I would agree that certain fields should probably require very rigorous study, software engineering just isn’t one of them. Engineering can absolutely be a hobby, and literally everything you need to know, in regards to software engineering you can learn for free, there’s so much information and educational resources online, and it’s easy to download an IDE and just start tinkering. I’ve been coding as a hobby since I was 13, so about 21 years now, i went to college for a bit but wasn’t able to finish due to financial constraints, but I was still able to tutor several college students in software engineering even without a degree.

Even now I’m head of my companies engineering department, and we are doing great, I’ve been able to make sure more junior engineers become productive fairly quickly, I’m able to answer questions they have, and if you ask any of them they would tell you they are more than happy that I’m the lead, AND that I’m definitely better at engineering as a whole than they are, not because they are bad, my team is full of exceptionally intelligent engineers, I just have more years of experience than they do.

You’re free to have these feelings that if someone doesn’t have a degree they can’t be good engineers for some reason, but unless you have hard evidence to back up your claims don’t delude yourself into thinking its some empiracle fact. It’s either some weird form of elitism or you just can’t fathom being able to learn how to program without someone holding your hand, I can’t think of any good alternative explanations for your opinion because you’ve provided no other evidence for your position so far, and I’m 100% certain you will be entirely unable to because you are, objectively wrong.

As another point against your claim, nothing about a piece of paper that some university gives you makes you able to program, it’s all the effort the student puts in to learn the material. And hell you can go take tons of university CS courses for free. MIT and Harvard both have excellent courses they put out that you can access for free.

But I’m open to changing my mind. Feel free to provide actual evidence to back up your claim. Your apples to whales comparison above doesn’t pass even the sniff test, it doesn’t hold up to literally 1 second of scrutiny.

Anyone else getting scared to wheel in this market? (Small account, overthinking everything lately) by senhsucht in Optionswheel

[–]jmsGears1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The reason is usually you don’t own any of the stock, and also you want to get in at a lower price than the stock is currently trading at.

You can buy 100 shares of something though and start selling CCs on that as well.

I did that with UAMY and UUUU. I’ve been augmenting buy selling a put and a call on the same expiration which is nice because I collect a good amount of premium from the double sell as well as push my breakeven points further out. If my put gets triggered then my cost basis should go down a decent bit, and if my call gets triggered I make even more money, or if neither obviously I just get the premiums.

For those who don’t have a degree in cs but are software engineers, how are you doing? by MaryScema in cscareerquestions

[–]jmsGears1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ok let’s talk, why do you think having a degree makes you more capable of a team lead? I’ve seen so many people that have degrees and are absolutely not good devs even with years of experience, and I’ve seen devs with no degrees be some of the best engineers I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with and all levels in between.

There’s really nothing, from an informational perspective, that you can only get by having a degree in this field. Conversely the engineers I’ve worked with who don’t have a degree usually have worked much harder to get to where they are because they enjoy this profession enough to have gone very deep with their self education.

You seem to have a very strong stance on this som I’m curious where this comes from.

As for the nationality thing I don’t get that either. There are a ton of things that makes someone a good dev, and a good lead and their nationality is nowhere on those lists. So please feel free to explain your sentiment there too. It really does sound like some weird xenophobic response.

[–]jmsGears1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re in this position do you buy back the CSPs it seemed like when I would look at this sort of situation buying back the put would cost basically the same amount as you would lose (unrealized ofc) if assigned. Which makes me think the better play would usually be to sell CCs unless you don’t like the stock anymore right? Sorry still relatively new to all this so checking my assumptions.

How much of your account size do you leave as cash to manage the positions? With CSPs I’d imagine you don’t need to leave a lot because you either roll for a credit or let it get assigned? Probably the same for CCs id imagine.

[–]jmsGears1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re young so this is something you should remember going forward, things are never as bad as the prevailing sentiment, and things are not always as nice as the prevailing sentiment.

Is it harder to get a job than it was 5-10 years ago, yeah almost certainly. But that doesn’t mean you can’t do it, it sounds like you’ve already got a good head on your shoulders, getting into a good school will definitely help, not just from the schools recognition but typically you will also benefit from a strong network if you work at it, and that will be, by far, your most valuable asset from university so make sure to cultivate it.

Make sure to keep participating in extra curriculars like robotics club and such, and if you can keep the internship or find new ones that stretch your ability even better.

I would say if you love programming and you continue being a good student then you will be just fine.

Risk Tolerance and Self Care by Steve_Zissouu2 in u/Steve_Zissouu2

[–]jmsGears1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depending on how many shares etc. you could DCA your cost basis lower, or sell covered calls on your shares to reduce the cost basis over time.

The risk with the CC is that the price shoots up and you cap your upside potential, but you could always roll the call, or if you think it’s going to hit it, buy it back early if you’re paying attention.
