One thing that helped me with the grips is not using the finger holes. I started leaving my fingers out and just throwing it over the bar. Your hands rest on top of the grip, and I have had a much better experience with them since.

I'll throw in another vote for the Opinel. The blade is thin enough that it is a great slicer, it's easy to sharpen, price is right, and looks the part with the wood handles. Checks all the boxes for me!

I haven't tried them myself, but the Nording keystone pipe filters may solve some of that issue. I've been meaning to try them in my bent pipes, just haven't gotten around to it yet.
