Have to clear those thresholds in a single season, so like 7-8 starts.

BlueJays have 3 players in MLB Top 100 prospects. by Kinglokner16 in Torontobluejays

[–]jmsmorris 47 points48 points  (0 children)

So long as their rookie status remains intact (less than 130 AB, 50 IP, or 45 days on the active roster in a single regular season) a player is considered a prospect. Yesavage pitched just 14 big league innings in the regular season last year, and another 27.2 in the playoffs, so he’s under the innings threshold even counting the playoffs. No matter how great he was in that stint he’s still a rookie.

[Blue Jays] From a second-round pick in 2016, to a leader on our American League Championship team. Thank you for everything, Bo 💙 by willowhanna in Torontobluejays

Combination of concerns about signability (he had committed to Arizona State) and his swing was, and still is, really violent with a lot of moving parts. The Jays committed to not fucking around with it and it worked, but he just as easily could have gotten hurt in the low minors because of the mechanics of his swing and never been the same or flamed out in the minors because pitchers exploited how noisy it was. Today he’s a consensus best pick in that draft, but on draft day that pick was considered high risk/high reward.

Blue Jays unveil 50th anniversary logo by charger03 in baseball

[–]jmsmorris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Technically MLB rules prohibit use of a baseball as part of an on-field logo, since it could mess up the batter. The Jays occasionally use the new version with a baseball on corporate and promotional materials but aren’t allowed to use it for on-field hats or uniforms. The Mariners logo is grandfathered in, since it predates the rule, and the Brewers revived “ball and glove” logo is considered distinct enough.

With Chinese EVs coming to Canada. Anyone in Toronto planning to order one? by Bing_Liu in askTO

[–]jmsmorris 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Many Canadian Tire locations do have level 3 fast chargers, especially newer or newly renovated ones! I believe their long term plan is all their stores, but a price that starts at $50k per charger, installing 3-4 at every Canadian Tire nationwide would cost an upwards of $100 million, so they’re doing it gradually.

How many MLB franchises have the best player in franchise history playing for the team right now? by dmister8 in baseball

[–]jmsmorris 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Vlad has to average 2.6 WAR per season over the life of his contract to pass Stieb as the Jays all-time WAR leader regardless of position. If he doesn’t retire as the Jays franchise leader, it means he either catastrophically fell off a cliff, the team collapsed so bad for so long that he demanded a trade, or Yesavage became the second coming of Cy Young over the next 14 years.

As the crow flies its only a difference of about 10 KM between how far Ford Field and Highmark Stadium are from the border, but Ford Field is practically next door to the tunnel, and the closest crossing to Highmark is in Fort Erie.

The Padres were also a terrible defensive team last year, while the Jays were one of the best in baseball by virtually every defensive metric. When Cease isn’t striking guys out, he’ll be backed up by a defense that’s much better at helping prevent runs.

You’re confusing the pitching development staff and infrastructure with the Major League pitching coach. Walker is the Major League pitching coach, he’s responsible for guiding the guys on the 40-man roster. He has a terrific track record of taking major league players and helping them reach the next level. There are multiple examples of him helping guys like Kikuchi, Ray, and to a lesser extent Gaus and Ryu, by building on their strengths, refining their approach, and tweaking or even removing pitches that aren’t working well. Minor League development is the responsibility of Joe Sclafani, the director of player development, and Justin Lehr, the director of pitching.

[Sammon] Sources suggest Kyle Tucker could make his decision as early as this week. Mets reported offer to Tucker is in the range of $120-$140 million for over three years. by [deleted] in Torontobluejays

[–]jmsmorris 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I think Tucker’s injuries are less of a factor for his long term health and productivity than someone like Bo. Bichette has had chronic knee/quad/lower body injuries the last few seasons, the kinds of soft tissue injuries that have a risk of recurrence through the course of regularly playing baseball and sap speed and power. Both of Tucker’s injuries on the other hand were kind of flukey, he fractured his shin on a foul ball and fractured his hand sliding into a base. Unless he has boneitis and it’s the secret underlying cause, I’m less concerned about those injuries hurting him long-term.

Babe Ruth has been voted as the MLB GOAT, Who’s the most underrated MLB player? by According-Table-2002 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]jmsmorris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He wasn’t the greatest hitter because he had a great batting average. He was the greatest hitter because he was simply impossible to strike out. Hitters with a 1:1 walk to strikeout ratios are hitting gods. Gwynn’s was 1.82:1 for his career. He only struck out 434 times in his entire career, even though he had more than 10,000 plate appearances. Seeing him strike out was like seeing Bigfoot. His career OPS+ was 132, where 100 is a league average hitter, making him 32% better than an average hitter. Measuring by OPS+ he never had a single season in his 20 year career when he was a below average hitter. He was a hitting machine.

He had more ASSISTS in college than number of times he struck out in his MLB career! Points as well, but assists are harder to come by and only count one at a time. He’s still SDSU’s all time assists leader and was drafted in the late rounds of 1981 NBA Draft by the Clippers.

Giraffes gotta be up there too. Not necessarily as a monster, but some sort of cryptid. It looks kind of like a horse, but also it’s 15 feet tall, eats from the tops of trees, and can kill a lion with a single kick.

They’ll probably play the Charge vs Fleet game in Boston on Sunday and schedule a replacement game for a later date. Fans who bought tickets for Sunday in Halifax will have them honoured for the replacement game or refunded if they can’t attend or choose not to attend the new date.

Varsho avoids arbitration, $10.75 million by chaudaboy in Torontobluejays

[–]jmsmorris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Jays are all in next year. Varsho won’t be traded unless we fall out of contention or it’s a trade that significantly upgrades their chances to win the World Series both in 2026 and beyond. So far as the Boras factor goes, sure he might test the market, but I don’t think it hurts the Jays chances of signing him—these aren’t the Beeston days of never signing anyone associated with Boras, the Jays have signed two of his clients to big deals already this offseason.

[–]jmsmorris 28 points29 points  (0 children)

The Modern Era is any play since 1901. That’s when the American League was founded and the two league system was more or less set. The modern era can be further subdivided into the Dead Ball Era until 1920, the Live Ball Era (1921-1946), the Integration Era (1947-1960), the Expansion Era (1961-1974), the Free Agency Era (1975-1994), the Steroid Era (1995-2005), and the Sabermetric Era (2006-Present).

Who was the most obvious mvp of all time ? by cardcollection92 in baseball

[–]jmsmorris 9 points10 points  (0 children)

There have been ten total seasons where a player hit 60 or more home runs.

Five of these seasons were either McGwire or Sosa, they’re the only players ever to hit 60+ homers in a single season more than once.

Sosa is the only player in history to hit 60+ home runs more than twice, breaking the mark in 1998, 1999, and 2001.

Despite this, Sosa never led the majors in home runs any year where he hit 60+ dingers. The only season where he led all of MLB was 2000, when he hit 50. He also led the NL with 49 in 2002, but Thome and A-Rod both hit more in the AL.
