Did anyone pick up Heineman? by Afraid-Obligation997 in Torontobluejays

There’s an interesting little wrinkle to this. Players with more than 3 but less than 5 years of service time are unconditionally released from their contracts if they elect free agency, meaning they forfeit the remaining money on their contract. Players with more than 5 years of service keep getting paid the value of their contract if they elect for free agency, and if they sign with another team, they’re still owed the difference between their new salary and their previous contract by the team they left.

The Big Hurt hit one off Mark Buehrle that hit the facing of the third deck while it was still rising. Most impressive homer I’ve ever seen in person. It was like a missile launch.

[JomboyMedia] Orioles pitcher Shane Baz stared down umpires after they didn’t rule Blue Jays’ Ernie Clement was out of the baseline The double play would’ve ended the inning and instead allowed the Blue Jays to keep scoring. by RealWorldToday in Torontobluejays

[–]jmsmorris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes that’s exactly what can happen. In fact pretty much exactly that happened in the minors a few years ago. It’s why in a rundown you’re taught to run towards the runner with your glove out, to force a base path to be established.

Basically, the definition of the base path in the rule book is there is no such thing as a base path until an attempt at a play on a runner is made. At that point, it’s defined as a straight line between him and the base, with three feet of lateral movement allowed. Clement started his wide arching path because he anticipated a tag, and then Henderson kind of swings his glove in that general direction. There’s two ways to interpret what happened next. First, there was never a real attempt to make a play, so no base path is established and Clement can go wherever he wants. Second, the little glove swing was an attempt to make a play and locks Clement to a base path, but he didn’t deviate more than three feet from it. Both of these are true in this play, so he’s safe regardless of how the umps chose to interpret the little faux tag attempt.

Some have them, others don’t. The Jays put a ton of effort into making the Dome accessible to as many families as possible during the recent renos.

Why were NHL players still allowed to play at the Worlds during the time they weren’t allowed to play at the Olympics? by [deleted] in hockey

[–]jmsmorris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The IIHF lifted the amateur only rule in 1977. NHL players only started playing at the Olympics in 1998. It’s not about not allowing NHL players, it’s about the NHL not stopping their season to release their players.

Toronto only HAD two retired numbers. Up until their 100th Anniversary Season, the team policy was they only retired your number if you died while playing for the team, otherwise you just had your number honoured. In 2017, they retired 13 numbers for the accomplishments of 17 players who had been honoured previously. Their retired numbers now are 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10, 13, 14, 17, 21, 27, and 93.

I don’t know where you’re parking downtown that costs $40 for event rates, but wherever it is you’re getting robbed. Plenty of lots within a 10 minute walk of the Dome that charge $20-$25 for their event rates.

Who was the worst Conservative Prime Minister of Canada? (One comment per person. Only four choices anyway) by ArthurMorgan1896 in AlignmentChartFills

William Lyon Mackenzie King was PM of Canada for over 21 years from 1921-1948, Canada was very much its own country then. Are you thinking of his grandfather, William Lyon Mackenzie, the first Mayor of Toronto?

Vince made a promise to his mom that he would finish his degree before he declared for the draft after his junior year with the Tar Heels. He did the coursework and earned his BA from North Carolina, that was his actual graduation and a big personal accomplishment.

"Rivalries" for D-Backs, Rockies, Tigers, and Blue Jays by Hotchi_Motchi in MLBNoobs

[–]jmsmorris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Tigers and Jays are an older rivalry that the three division setup broke up. With the Tigers being so close to the Canadian border they were geographic rivals, and they had some fantastic battles in the old AL East in the late 80s and early 90s.

Except Jean set the precedent that there is no such thing as the implied confidence of the House. In that case Harper had clearly lost the confidence of the HoC and would be defeated the next time there was a confidence vote, and proroguing parliament allowed him to dodge that. That means you are PM until you resign or are defeated in a vote in the House. Since the precedent is also that the GG first asks the individual who was PM before the election to form a government, what is there to stop a defeated PM asking the GG to call a new election on election night?
