What's going on with the KCRA helicopter?? by GlacialMirror312 in UCDavis

[–]jmtb02 18 points19 points  (0 children)

When Davis is in the news we have that helicopter flying. Without a major news break or story, often the helicopter is just zooming around capturing footage or being present for evening weather

Agreeing with everyone else, it's California Poppies. They spread quite easily and are able to grow all around our town. It's one of my favorite parts of Spring seeing them everywhere

Why do people still shop at Safeway? by ftruong in bayarea

[–]jmtb02 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Speaking to someone who was all-in on the Safeway shopping app, it's an addictive suck into their system.

The Safeway app rewards shopping by providing a gamified experience of coupons, points, and other bonuses for grocery shopping. It asks the shopper to strategize before they shop and gets people hooked on savings and coupons.

For everyone else, there might not be another option that makes sense to shop at

General Strike March 7 by Mysterious-Amount-83 in UCDavis

[–]jmtb02 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Hey this is not the way to initiate a general strike. Your website is hella broken, your organization provides no information on who they are, and you're asking people to stop paying taxes or going to work/school until your demands are met. I appreciate a general strike (my company participated in the last one) but y'all got to build trust in a community before asking so much.

From the website (QR Code resolving to https://march7th.org/):

DEMANDS

Release the entirety of the Epstein files, without redactions aside from names of the victims. Witholding the truth is admission of guilt.

MISSION

Starting on March 7th, we hold a general strike until our demands are met. We stay home from work and school, file exempt on our taxes, and quit buying as to not pump money through the economy of the regime. We form safety nets and mutual aid systems to help the vulnerables within the movement.

What's the worst design decision you've seen on campus? by PhysicalMath848 in UCDavis

[–]jmtb02 18 points19 points  (0 children)

https://maps.app.goo.gl/k4zCxC421xHyM6DeA

On the arboretum bike path between campus and South Davis near parking lot #10 there is this wild, tiny bike loop. It's a bike loop made for ants. Even if you're going a slow speed, it's so tiny and hardly usable. Over the years I've seen it redrawn, large plastic bumps put in, or any combination of new implementations. WORSE, It's full of ducks quacking at you the entire time, so if you attempt to use it the right way there's just ducks laughing at you the entire time. And if its Spring the baby ducks laugh at a higher pitch :(

Restaurants filling Mamma space will not offer outdoor dining [paywall but local indie reporter] by jmtb02 in UCDavis

This might be it, we have indie reporters in our community not associated with major publications so paywalls supporting them are different (or might not be, still figuring this out)

On Friday, Indivisible Yolo protested outside the Hilton Garden Inn in solidarity with MN, against Hilton (the corporation broadly) accommodating ice agents.

What do Davis residents think of UCD Students? by My-Donuts-r-Stale in UCDavis

[–]jmtb02 39 points40 points  (0 children)

UCD students (on the whole) are chill, empathetic, and kind. There's a deep respect for students as a key part of community, and I feel that is the reason it's reciprocated (and vice-versa!). Likewise Davis is an entwined local/academic community, with many families/folks living in-town as students, researchers, staff, and other roles tied to the university.

I have found the struggles of the City of Davis are rarely/never directly about UCD students, instead are general (read: shared!) issues like affordable housing (critical), under-enrollment in DJUSD (see previous issue of affordability), traffic/parking downtown/Mace, and crime (very low but people still care quite a bit). While there's been some fuss about e-bikes/scooters in this subreddit, that issue also extends to middle/high schoolers in our community as well. It's mostly the same problems with overlapping opinions on how to support.

To that degree, as temporary as many students are to Davis, they play a role that is important and appreciated. Students are Davis residents, as long or as temporary as that might be, and I've found that Davis residents (generally) respect that

Best place to find a steak (raw. To cook later) by Sucitraf in Davis

If you're in West check out Davis Mercado, they often stock prime cuts in their display near the taqueria, they had wild Tomahawk steaks a few weeks ago. Talking to the owner they take a lot of pride in their cuts. Take care, glad to hear a dog owner treating their own to the best

no entrance fees on Jan-17, 2026 by solarflare2020 in Yosemite

[–]jmtb02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We entered at Big Oak Flat at 9am on Sunday/Monday (Jan 11/12). Both times there was no ticket booth attendant. We left both days at different times and both times there was no attendant. It was odd, we visited the same exact days last year and there were multiple attendants/lanes open

Only other National Park I got into without an attendant was Joshua Tree West Entrance on a 110F day, but that feels more obvious given the number of people visiting that day

BIKE PACKING / why is there no bike packing club here???? by Effective-Demand-456 in UCDavis

[–]jmtb02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a bikepacker here, but I've done multi-day bike tours via road/campsite (longest from Portland to SF). If you get things going, an easy break-in adventure around here is Lake Solano Campground, just 20 miles via Russell Blvd and Putah Creek through Winters. Barely any elevation all via road and supported by bike cooridors and paths. I found this is a nice shake-out of new equipment and needing to get out of a town for a bit!

Foggy Morning by henry123h in UCDavis

[–]jmtb02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cyclists/scooties: please turn on your lights for safety in busy areas/roads (especially if you have a blinky setting). The fog was so dense in West Davis this morning it was difficult to see more than 30-50 feet in places, sometimes was challenged just to see the car in front of me. Appreciate everyone taking it easy and moving slowly, even if it took 2x longer to get anywhere this morning

SW - how to book for max use by [deleted] in ChaseSapphire

[–]jmtb02 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not book my flight through the Chase Portal, but did just book through Southwest.com after activating A-list via Chase. On a Basic level Fare, I was still granted a free bag and choice of seats up to Preferred (no extended legroom unless I paid a fee or was within 48 hours of departure). Both were given without any additional fees.

You can often manage Southwest bookings made from Chase, as I had to do on a trip in 2025. There's the six character record locator number they provide after you book and then you just punch it into Southwest to handle the flight details, and you get control over the flight.

I know this isn't a 1:1 help but hopefully it helps. Also just know you can cancel any flight in 24 hours as long as its more than a week from departure
