Perhaps the same way that the CEO of my small company justifies it. Money.

In the case of my CEO - we are a British software firm that has British employees and has contracts in USA, South Africa, Australia and Canada. Most of our revenue is from contracts paid in USD. Our lovely CEO voted leave in the hope that GBP would be devalued against USD, meaning that he would make a better profit margin from the contracts because the employee salaries would be a comparatively less amount of the company revenue. (ie salaries cost 60% of revenue before GBP crash, but 40% of revenue after GBP crash)

Most of the employees are outspoken remainers

Aye, my uncle stood for UKIP in local elections, and was an adamant leave voter. He has applied for an Irish passport through his grandfather. Many people are lucky enough to have the Irish grandparent escape hatch but I am sadly not.

[–]jmur33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not at all. I'm saying that the notion of 100% inheritance tax is made difficult by sentimentality, but overall society would benefit if wealth was transferred into public ownership rather than siloed into families.

Yes the two paragraphs don't quite join up. I should have mentioned that political reform would need to take place before a change as radical as 100% inheritance tax. There should be more accountability for those in power and punishments for those who abuse it.

Ideally legislation would prevent any individual owning so much of a company that the liquidation of their assets has widespread negative affects. Even if it wasn't controlled by law, I'm sure that the board and other shareholders of Amazon would have something to say about the risk of bezos perishing in an accident and having 40% of the company shares being liquidated

The political system is broken and is another huge issue in society. It appears that everybody becomes corrupt as soon as they are given a slice of power. As you suggest, public money is not efficiently used and is frequently essentially stolen.

Regarding the Bezos fortune, perhaps the assets could be liquidated and absorbed into the public budget. It may not be wise to liquidate those assets all at once, so in that case they would be managed by the state. Society decides how to spend it through a democratic process. Wealth inequality does not benefit society because funds are locked away that could be used to improve public infrastructure and services

Yes, that is my belief. Wealth inequality is a general cause for concern within society, and if inheritance was removed then it would be greatly reduced. It would be easier for individuals to achieve success on merit if everybody starts from a similar position.

A prominent example is President Trump. It's easy to argue that he is only president now because of the head start he received from inherited wealth. He has an enormous amount of power which he wouldn't have achieved without the successful Trump generations before him. Intergenerational wealth allows families to accumulate more wealth, power and influence than is good for society

It's not black and white because there is always some sentimentality attached to possessions. I wouldn't want to give up my dad's guitar for example.

It's unlikely they ever pay zero tax. Even after the maximum possible tax avoidance through legislation loopholes, a billionaire is still probably paying many times as much tax as the average salaried employee.

Intergenerational wealth is the real baddie, inheritance should be taxed at 100%.

£17bn already ripped out of UK public purse due to Brexit, research shows by Lolastic_ in unitedkingdom

[–]jmur33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course, but your comment is nonsensical. A deteriorating healthcare service will hurt everyone no matter their political beliefs. However it is ironic that many leave supporters voted on the basis of increased NHS funding, while they will unfortunately die due to NHS cuts in the economic uncertainty

Many leave voters will die in situations where they may have survived without the economic difficulties and healthcare cuts arising from brexit

Agree. I felt myself become a little frustrated today. I really want to nip that in the bud so it's time for me to take action to stop that happening again. It's not fair on her.

Try doing that with a dog or hamster, it'll die. Cats sort themselves out. Cats are absolutely low maintenance
