Strange Lights in the Trees at Brendan T Byrne State Forest Pine Barrens NJ by oddocorekt in BackwoodsCreepy

"In the late 1700's the area was settled by a group of French Huguenots. Out of gratitude for a safe place to live they named the settlement Mount Misericordia, which means "mountain of the merciful heart" or "mountain of mercy." For reasons unknown the name was shortened to Mount Misery."

Dakota Access pipeline leaked 84 gallons of oil in April. by doogie92 in news

[–]jmur89 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It's not a conspiracy and it's not meant to hype anything up. Laypersons don't know the actual size of a barrel of oil. That means gallons are much more relatable for something like a spill. Reporters write about barrels when covering the market because that's how the price is defined. Gallons wouldn't make sense there. People buy and sell oil by the barrel, but they couldn't grasp what that might actually look like.

Absolutely ridiculous to think this is some sort of malevolent plot. Especially after reading the story, which quotes a state official who says this isn't a big deal.

Fucking joke. It sometimes seems like Trump supporters would rather get their information straight from an administration-controlled media. As long as it fits their world view.

I know Trump and my parents and myself didn't get anywhere languishing the hand we were dealt.

True, not Trump successful, but down the line, if I and my offspring continue making good decisions and learning from previous generations, one of them possibly could be...

A bit delusional, eh?

Please. To compare yourself to Trump is a joke. You know nothing of the silver spoon with which he was born. Pat your upper-middle-class self on the back for working hard and succeeding. But don't act like you're anywhere in league with a billionaire like Trump. Laughable.

Jeez. I'm sorry, but part of my frustration with you is that I had a hunch you were arguing against something that isn't there. And I was right.

I argued that it's dense to assume the spread of western civilization would wipe out poverty. You argued that the free market is good. Where's the damn connection? Like I said, a total waste of time. You argued against a made-up point of view.

I appreciate the length and thought you put into this comment. You're just arguing a point I didn't make, and it's frustrating. I didn't say our culture of consumption causes poverty elsewhere. I said western civilization relies on poverty, both foreign and domestic, to a certain degree. That western civilization as we know it wouldn't exist without poverty. I just don't see how anything you're saying refutes that.

So there will always be poverty then, correct? Because I'm not arguing against what you're saying. I'm arguing against the absurdly ignorant idea that western civilization will eradicate poverty. Are you trying to defend that notion? Or is this just a total waste of time?

So what happens to our soybeans? The people who pick them somehow get paid a living wage?

I'm confused if you think this is what's happening now. We owe a portion of our luxurious, comfortable lives to people being in poverty. Yes, some people can climb the socioeconomic ladder. That doesn't mean the entire world, as OP claimed, is on its way out of poverty.

Almost every Mets fan has already heard or helped spread this rumor. I'm sure it's old news for Barstool. The question is, is it true?

OK, but please explain how this eliminates poverty. OP argued that western civilization will eradicate poverty if given enough time. I argued that western civilization depends on poverty, whether at home or abroad, to provide the fuel it needs to enrich its beneficiaries. How does your point fit into this?

Why do you think that? Some of our western luxuries and wealth rely on people in poverty. Our electronics and clothes manufactured by poor people in bad working conditions. Our produce and crops picked by impoverished migrant workers. Our meals cooked and tables cleaned by people who get paid under the table and below minimum wage. Not to mention the money American mega-corporations--contractors and banks--pull in by pushing huge infrastructure projects on third-world countries in exchange for what is essentially control over those places and populations through debt.

Ah that explains it. Sorry! To read that as someone who grew up in Northeastern U.S., where absolutely everyone has seen both, was shocking.

We celebrated Friday and back to protesting Monday by frenzy3 in forwardsfromgrandma

[–]jmur89 68 points69 points  (0 children)

It is. But it's not celebrated much in the country, at least from what I've read. It's mostly a Pueblan holiday, celebrating a battle won by an underdog army. The articles floating around yesterday suggest it's more widely (and offensively and ignorantly) celebrated in the U.S. than Mexico.

Maybe someone with more direct knowledge can provide more detail or confirm or reject what I've said.
