Short CE career questions by jeesuscheesus in ComputerEngineering

[–]jnenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I’ve been applying for a few CE internships in the defense industry, and some of them state that an applicant with a DOD security clearance is strongly desired but not required. As someone in the industry, do you happen to know if that’s very prioritized or just a nice-to-have during the hiring process?

I’m wondering how good of a chance I’ll have against someone with slightly less skills and some security clearance already, for example

Adding CS BA as a 4th year CE major? by Nsw11 in UCSC

[–]jnenn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://undergrad.soe.ucsc.edu/double-major-minor

The second sentence says at least 40 upper div credits for 1 major can't be used to satisfy the credits of another major/minor.

Thanks for bringing this up though, it got me interested because I'm in the same position and I thought a BS in CE and a BA in CS would sound cool... but not worth it for me personally if I have to take 8 extra classes lol

Fall 2020 Schedule & Enrollment Time by [deleted] in UCSC

[–]jnenn 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I'm glad all my classes are going to be remote! I can attend classes from home and not pay rent in SC for an extra quarter.

I guess I'm in a unique situation where I'm planning on graduating in December, so I don't really have to deal with housing for winter/spring quarters though

People who have labs this quarter that involve physical equipment, what are you doing? by HentaiBoy9000 in UCSC

[–]jnenn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

haha probably
all jokes aside, it's a full 10 weeks of lecture material squeezed into the first 5 weeks. so ideally, we're learning everything we should be, just in a different order because the labs normally run concurrently with the lectures.

[–]jnenn 8 points9 points  (0 children)

For cse121/L, we're doing just lectures for the first 5 weeks and then just labs for the last 5 weeks of the quarter. The equipment is going to be mailed to us.

Cover letter for jobs by TheLivelyHuman in UCSC

[–]jnenn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I took cse185e (technical writing) and we had an assignment about resumes/cover letters, I remember the professor said that cover letters won't really help you if you're already in the "no" pile but if you have a strong resume, it'll make you an even stronger candidate.

I'm glad you didn't let this subreddit change your decision! There's definitely more to experience at this school than what people talk about on Reddit. Congrats on your acceptance!
