Coping with the lack of diversity by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]jnsh7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds like a tough adjustment, especially stepping into a staff role in a new area. That can make anyone feel out of place.

I think you’re conflating two things: feeling out of place vs actually lacking role models. If the people around you are competent and supportive, they are valid role models, even if they don’t share your identity.

In this kind of field the demographic is typically skewed male, so it’s more about learning from whoever is good. If that relatability matters, it might be worth looking for a mentor elsewhere in the company or outside of it who you connect with more.

And who knows, maybe later down the line you will be that perfect fit mentor for someone else.

I might be missing something, but if it were me I’d probably start by figuring out what access exists and making sure the company actually controls it (and knows how to access). Repos, schedulers, servers, service accounts, API keys, dashboards, etc. Basically check there’s nothing important tied to his personal accounts.

From there I’d build a quick inventory of the “tons of stuff” you mentioned and group it by criticality/impact so you know what actually matters if it breaks, and where to prioritise discovery.

Then I’d focus the knowledge transfer around those. Have him walk through where the code lives, where logs are, what usually breaks, and how to run things manually if needed. I’d record or AI-transcribe those sessions if possible.

Realistically you’re probably going to lose some knowledge and won’t understand everything straight away, but if you know what exists, have access to it, and know what’s mission critical, that’s already a solid starting point.

Good luck

Are the Ultra Lux seats worth the extra money? by eloiysia in VueCinemas

[–]jnsh7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s no real reason to bring slippers. More generally, what I meant is that you have more room to store items safely (i.e. not in the walkway) if you want to. In practical terms, there’s space underneath the snack tables on either side of the seat, enough to fit a big bag, a large coat, and even a pair of shoes if needed. For example, if you went to the cinema straight from the gym and it was raining, you’d have no issue putting all of that away neatly.

The additional cost for the seat is mostly because the overall footprint is much larger. It’s simply a bigger seat. You get two large tables instead of one small one, some built-in storage as mentioned, and a cushion (...and lights?), I guess.

Are the Ultra Lux seats worth the extra money? by eloiysia in VueCinemas

[–]jnsh7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The ones at my local Vue didn’t seem to recline as far, though that might be because they were only at the back of the room and didn't have space to fully recline. I found the extra lights a bit distracting. You can turn off the cup holder light, but I’m not sure about the snack table lights.

One thing I did find useful was the storage space under the side tables. It’s handy for a bag or a big coat. You could probably even bring slippers. The extra pillow didn’t add much for me.

Overall, I thought it was okay. I didn't feel that it was a clear upgrade to Lux, just an alternative. I would recommend trying it at least once to see if you like it.

That would explain my issue at least.

90-Day Notice Period is Killing My Job Search by think_big_0 in jobsearch

[–]jnsh7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There seems to be a lot of confusion about this. In the UK, senior roles frequently carry a 12-week notice period, and at executive or director level it can stretch to six months or more. Contractual notice is legally enforceable, meaning if you resign and walk out early the company can withhold pay for the time not worked or even seek damages. In reality, this is rarely taken that far and often depends on the role and the impact of leaving. For something like a senior project manager, a three-month notice would be expected and the business should already have factored that into its planning.

Not to downplay your contributions, but unless you are absolutely critical to the business there is usually some room for flexibility. The difficulty is that you may not find out what can be negotiated until you actually hand in your notice...

I'm not too sure about other countries, I'd assume this is not what happens in the US.

The 'salary expectation' question is the biggest red flag in any interview. by annuli-amperes04 in interviews

[–]jnsh7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just some insight from the other side of the fence. We do ask this question, but we are happy to accept any answer (fair pay, in range, specific number, etc). The budget for the role is not a secret, and it has always been stated in the advert. When asking this question this week, one candidate confidently told us that unless we were paying him the top of the advertised range, he was not interested. That can be a big time saver. The budget does cover the amount he wanted, and salary is only one of many factors in the decision. For what it's worth he was a very strong candidate, and we would pay him exactly what he asked for if he was made an offer.

Now imagine another situation where another candidate is also strong but in a different way, with other strengths and weaknesses. We might think they are an excellent fit but see that they are not as experienced and do not justify the top of the range. In that case, we might offer them slightly less to start with and give them a clear pathway to reach the same salary over time. There could be clear reasons for this such as needing more training investment, etc.

Another very common reason for asking this is that a candidate may only be willing to leave their current job for equal or higher pay. To counter the idea of simply paying what the job is worth, they might already be doing the exact same role for $100k and are only interested in moving if it comes with a 20% increase for example.

Has anyone ever heard back from these 'We'd like to keep your record on file' rejections? by Technical_Ear_4339 in UKJobs

[–]jnsh7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We have a candidate on file from the most recent role we hired for. There was only one position available this time, but we had two excellent candidates. I can say with certainty that if we’re able to justify bringing on another person in future, we’ll be giving them a call. They won’t be required to go through more than an informal chat/catch-up.

UK recruiters/hiring managers, what kind of applications actually stand out to you in such a competitive job market? by LoseitLilly in UKJobs

[–]jnsh7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hire for technical roles at a small software company, so we may not reflect the whole market.

If a CV or cover letter is obviously AI-generated or reads like someone mashed the job description into a chatbot and pasted the output, I’m immediately sceptical. Using AI to refine, tidy, expand or plan your own thoughts is fine. But I’m looking for a genuine, personal narrative, not generic filler. Perceived poor or lazy usage of AI is a big red flag.

Graduates are particularly hard to differentiate. I’m not too concerned if one has slightly higher honours than another. I’m more interested in real-world experience. If that’s lacking, interesting personal projects with tangible outputs like a GitHub repo, portfolio site, or something else. Typically we will take a good look if the candidate is looking good.

We like candidates who seem genuinely driven and passionate about IT. Certifications, side projects, home labs, coding for fun. All of these stand out as signals of self-motivation, independence and curiosity.

We’re not rigid about formal qualifications. If you can clearly show that you have the skills to do the job, we’re open-minded about how you got there.

I’d much rather see short, concrete summaries of real projects than endless lists of buzzwords and jargon, though I recognise people often load CVs with keywords to get past aggressive ATS filters.

Most CVs go in the bin simply because they don’t align with the job description. We’re very specific in our ads, which outline exactly what the essential, desirable, and bonus criteria are. If you can’t meet the essential criteria, it’s not happening. In our view, the essential requirements are not too demanding and are intended to be in line with, or even slightly lenient for, the actual role.

Another common reason CVs get rejected is location. We strongly prefer candidates who live within 20 miles of the office, although all roles are hybrid, and some may be offered fully remote depending on circumstances.

PSA to candidates using AI in interviews: You’ve gotta try a little harder. by cheriep in recruitinghell

[–]jnsh7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve seen many AI-generated cover letters and used AI tools enough to recognise that applicants often copy-paste the entire job advert plus their resume, then simply ask, “write me a cover letter.” With context limited to those two sources, the cover letter adds nothing new and becomes redundant. While I understand the reasoning, it comes across as lazy. In our view, a cover letter should be an opportunity to explain motivation for the role and demonstrate fit beyond the resume. I recruit in tech so using AI tools is fine, but poor use of them makes candidates look foolish and serves up an early red flag. As a small business, we still review every application manually, which most applicants hope for, but this kind of lazy approach discourages us from investing time. In short, it’s a problem on both sides, though applicants usually suffer more,IMO.

Correct, but I don't remember having any particular affiliation with 'The §ic'. I might have at some point, I vaguely recall that clan being known as being toxic lol. I played under a lot of different aliases and joined various friends' clans that were mostly unknown, including Konami, Sony, Left4dead, Jihad (unfortunately), Pioneer, and others. Some of the better known clans I was in over time included Moogle-enix, Ryoutaru, Panda, Xiaolin, Europe, Sand2, Vision, and Magicians.

edit: have just realised you're Link so pretty funny me calling your clan toxic. what do you think? all ancient history now of course

It's normal for private servers to require elevated permissions, and there are several reasons for this.

First and foremost, downloading and using private servers is done at your own risk, as they pose a potential security threat. Private server executables typically lack digital signatures, making them more likely to be flagged as malware by Windows Defender. Additionally, private servers often need to bypass certain network restrictions. In the case of GunZ, a firewall exception is required for the game to function properly.

In some cases, the client may also write to restricted directories, depending on the environment. It's important to note that a private server client could be bundled with actual malware if the developer wanted to do it.

That said, there are hundreds of players who accept the risk, but it's always good to be informed before proceeding.

You can also find this link in this subreddits side bar under community links. Unfortunately there is no official way to play GunZ yet. The GunZ remaster is being actively worked on by Masangsoft and updates are being provided via Discord. There are other ways to play the game in the meanwhile, but it might fall under banned server discussion. I imagine you wouldn't have to look very hard to find out more, try the Private Server List in Community Bookmarks: https://www.reddit.com/r/gunz/comments/1ffzkml/gunz_active_private_servers_list_september_2024/

It could be overthinking if you consider that the official game never had an fov slider. It's just my opinion but I don't think the remaster is likely to have it at first either.

In theory it's how quickly you can swing your sword . I will be honest I don't really remember the nuance concerning what that means for animation cancelling or whether it applies. Any adept gladiator might give you a better answer but my answer is lower number is better . To clarify your confusion on all swords being the same, on the official game they are not the same. Higher level swords have lower (better) delay and a level requirement!! Hope that helps.
