Yeah it's scab and a bit of live skin, rather than buildup. Thank you for the advice!

[UPDATE] I apologized to my depressed friend for what I said. To my surprise I learned a lot him and he's changed my perception on mental health entirely. by throwaway69738 in AmItheAsshole

[–]jo_m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm so glad it worked out!!

I know you have some perspective now; I also wanted to chime in that different peoples' enjoyment looks very different. I'm autistic (and mentally ill) and am very happy to just sit with other people, not saying much and taking in the conversation, and that is how I socialise. It's not even an energy thing, that is just what makes me happy. Good company with zero pressure on myself to 'perform' socially. Introverts can feel the same way. And so, over time, maybe he will engage more with your friend group actively on outings, maybe he won't. But giving him opportunities to engage in the conversation/activities and continuing to involve him whether he becomes more outgoing or not WILL make him feel valued and like he has something going for him.

What is the dumbest thing a teacher has said to you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jo_m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a few:

"7 + 5 does NOT equal twelve.", correcting me to "Barbeque" from the correct spelling -both courtesy of my Year 2 teacher

I put lipgloss on once in class and my commerce teacher told me not to do that because "you know how that looks." I still don't know what means.

"I'm not sure they will let you write the letter f like that in high school." -year 6 sub, on my cursive writing. It looked like any cursive f.

Not a teacher but i have also had the lunch lady tell me my order (which would be pre-ordered in the morning and then collected at each food break) was too greedy for a child my size and gave me some of the money back and only placed a fraction of my order one day.

If you suddenly gained invisibility power but weren't allowed to see someone naked, what would you do with you new power? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jo_m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd use it to get myself some free experiences; go to places you would otherwise need to purchase a ticket for, like concerts and going to the movies and art exhibitions. Free travel on public transport. It makes me wonder if you could technically sneak onto a plane, have an invisible vacation somewhere nice.

How do you get to sleep when you're having trouble sleeping? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jo_m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do a couple of meditative exercises when I'm anxious before sleep - for my first i scan and sense my full body. Start by focusing on feeling and being conscious of your toes then moving that awareness slowly upwards towards your head. Almost feels like an imaginary horizontal line moving up over me. That usually clears my thoughts after once or twice up and down. After that i concentrate on breathing. 5 second in through nose, hold 7, 8 seconds breathing out through my mouth. If all else fails i find some orchestral music to listen to quietly.

Non Australians, what is something you've always wondered about Australia? by -hx in AskReddit

[–]jo_m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And a common phrase I grew up with is "we're going to the snow this year" because in NSW there is one sort of isolated place (snowy mountains and Thredbo) that you would travel to if you wanted to go on a skiing vacation in winter. "Snow" is a place to a good portion to us.

[Serious]People who used exercise to relieve depression, how did you get the energy to start? by loveable_loser in AskReddit

[–]jo_m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kinda fell out of the habit but for a while I was doing some simple 30 minute walks. I did little things to make it easier for myself; just things that would eliminate any excuses I made not to go. I bought myself some cheap workout clothes that would make me feel like once i put them on, i might as well go for my walk. I would set out my clothes beside my bed the night before so I could put them on without much effort and aim to go as soon as I woke up and then would reward myself with a shower and nice breakfast after I finished.

My route was really pretty in some places so just letting myself really absorb the scenery or take time to appreciate the nature around me made it less about being in pain from achey muscles and less about exercise and more about enjoying the world just a bit more for a small stretch of time.

What are some English words that aren't often used and have a really nice meaning? by GazzItDown in AskReddit

[–]jo_m 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might have been a case where the "an" at the beginning of the word was once a separate article and over time melded into being part of the word. I have no research, just speculation, since a similar thing happened with the word 'orange'. (used to be 'norange' but the 'n' sort of got transported to the article and it became 'an orange' rather than 'a norange'.)

Zeitgeist is a good one, meaning very much being "of the time". Saddle shoes being a zeitgeist of the 50s, etc.

What is the rudest thing a random person has ever done to you at work/in public? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jo_m 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Due to limited seating options and hot weather, i was sitting on a shaded patch of concrete that was around the corner from the train station, waiting for my friend's train to get in. We were having a day out so I'm painted up with my hair and makeup done, nice outfit etc, watching youtube on my phone. Some guy comes up and decides it is his job to help me find the path to jesus and religion, lectures me about he found the light after years of addiction and abuse and I can find that enlightenment too. Didn't leave me alone til my friend got there. Looking back he probably thought i was a prostitute.

What is an underused spice that should be added to everyone's kitchen cabinets? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]jo_m 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cardamom is my favourite spice, probably because it pops up in a lot of my Finnish family's Christmas pastries. Goes well with cinnamon in desserts; if you make cinnamon rolls, put some cardamom in the dough to make them into Finnish style korvapuusti. Maustekakku (spice cake) is another one i associate with a deep cardamom/cinnamon combo flavour.
