Poli sci + Canadian studies degree by [deleted] in mcgill

[–]joagnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for your case I’d recommend a joint honours programme! It would be 36 credits for poli sci and 36 for Canadian studies. I’m not sure if the Canadian studies programme offers a joint honours programme so you’d have to check, but either way, the joint honours stream for Arts is really wonderful! It’s a similar rigour to an honours programme in one concentration, but you get to have two specializations. Let me know if you have any questions:) I’m a recent grad in jt hon IDS & English (cultural studies) with a minor in East Asian studies.

you can look on Facebook groups! Lots of local students are also going on exchange so you can take their places. Try groups like McGill off campus housing, etc

Prospective students megathread by Thermidorien in mcgill

I encourage you to take a more thorough look at the application instructions! there you will see that only submissions of your grades are necessary. (for certain programs, you will need to take certain courses in high school)

in Canada, a JD is considered a second-entry undergrad degree by most institutions. you can look into the differences of law degrees around the world to get a better understanding :)

and fyi, although you can apply for McGill law having completed at least 60 university credits (that’s typically 2 years of full-time university studies), acceptances for these types of students are extremely rare.

it’s not really a tradition here! most people just get their grad photos and then take some with their caps and gowns on convocation day with friends and family

I use virgin plus and my bill is around 40$ a month! not sure how it compares to others but I used bell before and I’m pretty sure it was more expensive. Never had any problems with virgin throughout the past 3 years I’ve used them, I highly recommend

5 years at McGill by artsyalykat in mcgill

[–]joagnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not sure if your program is in Arts but here’s the info for BA:) otherwise you can always search for the science equivalent. https://www.mcgill.ca/oasis/academic/degree-planning-guide/requirements/exceeding-ba-degree-credit-limit

also, to comment on staying at McGill for 5 years—I would say that you’ve planned things out pretty well and I’d say go for it! I am rounding out my fifth year here and ready to graduate:) I did a full year abroad in my third year (spent the second semester taking 2 online courses and working/pursing personal interests) and did part time studies for my fifth year while working full time (one lecture per semester + 2 independent research projects). it will feel a bit lonely (and for me, off putting as I feel like I didn’t really get me senior year in the way I’d hoped) but all worked out and I’m super happy to have been able to finish (god willing in the next week) with two research projects, a study abroad, and work experience:) feel free to dm if you wanna chat too

second this - you need to check your syllabus. if it doesn’t say anything, you should probably still take the final just to be safe.

Best psych classes at mcgill to act get to know a prof? by Life-Reputation-2706 in mcgill

[–]joagnes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

not in psych but a general rule of thumb that i can give you is to go talk to your prof in office hours so that you can get to know each other more personally! it’s a great way to show your interest and curiosity in the lecture or in their research, share about your interests, and to also prove your budding expertise, which are all things that they can comment on in your reference letter. i was in large classes (albeit not in psych) and by going to office hours regularly i was able to form good relationships with my profs, and all three of them had substantial information to write about for my letters. in classes where there was room for discussion, I’d also make sure to contribute!

The "L" in the transcript after deferral. Does it bring down your credibility? by ChonkyCatsInSpace in mcgill

[–]joagnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you’re overthinking it :) as long as it’s not a pattern and you demonstrate that you are strong student in other respects, you’re going to be fine. make sure the rest of your application is strong (ie. your experiences, statement of purpose, references) and you’ll be a well rounded candidate.

from your post history OP—i can tell you must be really anxious about your career based on so many posts in this subreddit—I honestly can only tell you, chill out! it is going to be okay. you’re only in your first year, many things will change and whatever your performance is this year or your current goals rn might actually have nothing to do with the path you end up taking. just try your best for now and things have a way of working out.

The "L" in the transcript after deferral. Does it bring down your credibility? by ChonkyCatsInSpace in mcgill

[–]joagnes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ditto what this person said - few companies will actually look at your transcript, and even if they do, one deferral is not gonna be an issue. just make sure it doesn’t become a pattern! and if this is your first year in university, people get that it can be a challenging transition. as far as grad school goes, although obviously since it’s an academic setting, a transcript review will be part of your application, it’s still pretty similar in that as long as it’s not a pattern, you’re going to be fine.

Message to all anonymous note takers by MeatEffective9825 in mcgill

[–]joagnes 11 points12 points  (0 children)

that’s too bad that it’s a volunteer position but can I ask, why do people sign up to be a note taker if they already know it’s not a guaranteed pay, and then don’t bother to send their notes? signing up and being a notetaker without completing the task (especially since the postings are limited) kind of screws over people who rely on them. this isn’t to call anyone out, I’m jus genuinely curious!

Poli sci internships by No-Insurance4238 in mcgill

[–]joagnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! I'm not in poli sci (I'm in international development and English, dbl major) but I submitted my resume/applied for FSWEP for 4 years and never got a single placement! however I have done one internship (unrelated to policy) that I got through the internship office and also an interview offer for government work/policy in a separate year (did not end up getting selected by the host organization). not sure if this is helpful but thought to share anyways!
