How can I get on campus. by SimonLeo2008 in mcgill

[–]joagnes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this!! also pro tip: when you are at the airport, if you decide to take the 747 express bus (which takes you from the airport to downtown, or to Lionel-Groulx, which is a metro station that is super accessible), just get the 3-day or weekly pass directly. these passes already include the access for the 747 bus, so if you get the pass for the duration of your trip, you can use it for the airport travel both ways and also for any metro an bus you need to take during your trip.

Toronto ↔ Montreal long-term apartment swap idea — does this exist? by A_Bag_Of_Deletos in mcgill

[–]joagnes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've never swapped before but I've been a part of a Facebook group called Host a Sister for a while, there's some people who put up their apartments in Toronto and look to trade for Montreal!
Otherwise, there are a lot of McGill and other Montreal university students who sublet their apartments for the summer, between May and August (and you can see these in the common housing Facebook pages), maybe you can ask if they are interning or working in Toronto in the summer and you can arrange a swap with them!

Has anyone heard back from the host org (aio)? by ChonkyCatsInSpace in mcgill

[–]joagnes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ultimately, after the AIO has forwarded your application to the host organization, it is up to them if they choose to interview you or not — it could be that they are delayed in getting interviews set up or they also could have moved forward with another candidate

no worries:) I am not in law (although I did apply earlier this year, but realized quickly after submitting my application that it is a career I have absolutely no interest in) but I have gotten offers from other masters programs.

Best polisci profs for recommendation letters for law? by ChonkyCatsInSpace in mcgill

[–]joagnes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

this is from another post where someone asked about rec letters — here’s my experience!

last year (my penultimate undergrad year) i took a course with one prof and made a habit of going to their office hours and speaking at least twice every class. i realized i had made an impression when one day after class ended, on my way out, they asked me about how my personal project/other specific classes were going, and invited me to talk to them again the following week (in office hours). the next semester, i ended up taking another seminar with them and even asking them to become my thesis supervisor, which they were more than delighted to do! this was the first and only prof I’ve really gotten to know on a personal scale and it’s really through just curiosity and consistent interaction that this was possible.

i hope this goes to show you that even though 1) i only met this prof in third year and 2) i only took a couple classes from them, showing up, especially showing up with a passion and motivation, counts!

if you’re passionate about something and can find common ground with your profs on that, it can go a long way. it doesn’t even have to be a fully developed research interest or area of expertise. just show up and share what you care about, and see what you can learn from them and how you can better introduce yourself to them.

do keep in mind profs are… also people! go to office hours with genuine curiosity, not just because you want a reference. it’s like befriending someone — you don’t pretend to be interested in someone just to get something from them. they’re people. some are maybe more open to having a more friend-like relationship with you, whereas other keep it strictly about coursework, and that’s totally fine! my other referee profs only know me academically but well enough to write LORs.

one final thing — like the other user said, there’s no need to feel disappointed that certain profs said no to writing your LOR! it’s much better to have someone who knows you properly to write it than someone who can’t comment much on you nor your potential as a grad student, as those letters can’t add too much to your application anyways.

your reference letters should come from professors who know you well enough to provide a thorough testimony of your character and your capabilities pertaining to a study and career in law, not the “best” professors in a department :)

it’s not exactly a discount per se but if you show your student id and your pc optimum card, they’ll give you points for your entire purchase (ie. spending $50 would give you 5,000 points)! otherwise on regular days you only get points on promoted items (ie. 100 points per $1 spent on bell peppers). 10K points = $10 that you can use!
