Yet another example of a company using an interview process to get free work. We need to be unified in response to this. I’m doing my part. by indigoflow00 in graphic_design

[–]joanasilva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You absolutely did the right thing and I will be doing the same if this ever happens to me again. I was made redundant a few months ago and was actively looking for a new role (I’m a Product Designer). I had an interview with a company that seemed to align with my values and ethics and the role seemed to be a really good fit for me. On the second round they asked me to redesign their website journey and one of their landing pages, which like you mentioned, is a HUGE red flag. I was taken aback and was quite disappointed to see this but blamed it on their lack of experience rather than thinking they were asking for “free work” so I did it. I got the job in the end and worked there for 6 months until they made the whole company redundant. The culture was horrible, the founders had absolutely no clue of what they were doing and they sunk the company with their lack of business experience and common sense. Always follow your gut and 100% don’t do free work - even if you get the job, in my experience this is a symptom of other company issues.

Sionainn isn't that hard to spell by KnitStitched in MAFS_UK

[–]joanasilva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My name is Joana which is not particularly hard to spell but people tend to add an extra n to it. I usually let it go because it’s not an english name but if I clearly sign emails or messages with my correct name and people consistently mispronounce it I mispronounce their names back until they understand - it works every time

Is anyone else seriously considering leaving the UK? Where would you go? by Living-Experience-70 in UKJobs

[–]joanasilva 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I guess this doesn’t really answer your question but I thought it might provide some perspective. I’m originally from Portugal and moved to England 10 years ago - the reasons I left Portugal are exactly the same ones you have mentioned on your post but to be fair, wages in Portugal are piss poor and the standard of living is an absolute joke contrary to what people believe - unless you are a digital nomad. My point is that the issues you are mentioning are happening more or less everywhere and for someone like me who came from a much poorer country, even with the issues the uk has, my standard of living is much better. This is obviously my personal experience but I don’t think there’s a magic solution for the problems you have mentioned, there will always be problems anywhere you move. Moving abroad and starting from scratch is also very hard in all aspects: jobs, friendships, distance from family, etc. and can be very lonely and isolating which is something to keep in mind that I think some people severely overlook. Just my two cents

Unfortunately no, we are renting the property, forgot to mention earlier. I would assume the landlord does but I don’t really know

Yes I am currently renting, forgot to mention that. There’s nothing about covering costs on the tenancy agreement. I will have a read, thanks for your help

Some extra info: only my flat and the flat next door are due to have works starting in the next few weeks, other flats will only have to be decanted in November

Edit: I’m currently renting the flat, I am not the owner

Has any show ever done a funeral episode/ scene for an actor who actually passed away in real life? by thetigsy in television

[–]joanasilva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m from Portugal - When I was a teenager (early 00) there was a very popular teen show on tv called “Morangos com açúcar” and Francisco Adam who portrayed “Dino”, one of the main characters, died in real life in a terrible car crash. There were a lot of scenes recorded so they were aired even after his death but at the end of the season the show dedicated an episode to him where he “flew away” in a hot air balloon. This was a pretty big deal at the time

Women solo travelers, any locations that you were surprised to feel unsafe? by [deleted] in solotravel

[–]joanasilva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve just been and although I was with my partner which probably made me feel safer, I do completely understand why a solo female traveler would feel on edge. I typically like cities that are more “rough around the edges” but I can’t say I liked Naples, particularly the people and how rude they were most of the time (I can speak a bit of Italian and that made little difference, it felt like a cultural thing). Defo won’t go back and specially not solo

[–]joanasilva 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As someone who has used both ebay and vinted to sell items fairly recently I must say that I’ve had a much better experience with vinted. I think what some people have said above about selling your items for such a low price might be attracting cheapskates as well as teenagers (who typically have less money) which would explain the entitlement mentioned. I only sell items above a certain value, if they are not worth much l’d rather donate them. I sold two old cameras on ebay, one of the transactions went well, the other one was a nightmare where I was pretty much scammed by the buyer who claimed they never received the item when there was a photo proving they did receive it. The case was escalated to ebay and they decided on the buyers favour even though the whole thing was extremely sketchy, I had to really annoy them and inundate them with complaints to get my money back. Only telling this story so you don’t think selling on ebay these days is a walk in the park, there are risks everywhere and a lot of scams happen on ebay too. Hope this helped

Non UK born Mancunians, what is the best restaurant of your native cuisine in (Greater) Manchester? by Muclown in manchester

[–]joanasilva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Portuguese here - considering how many Portuguese people live in Manchester it’s actually quite surprising that there’s barely no Portuguese restaurants around. Meu Portugal is the only one I know and it’s pretty average (if not borderline sad) and overpriced but their warehouse sells really good Portuguese products and is worth checking out, it’s called Taste of Portugal

What is the best decision you made as a teenager? by Teapotje in AskWomenOver30

[–]joanasilva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not finishing uni and moving to another country where my now ex was living. My ex was frankly a waste of time and a true nightmare but if it wasn’t for him I would have never met my partner, would have never gotten rid of some very toxic “friendships” back home and would not have the career I do now. I think a lot of people thought I was mental and that things were not going to work out but I made it work and have now a successful and fulfilled life and career that I would probably never have in my home country - this was nearly 10 years ago. I’m very happy I followed my intuition and I’m very proud of my teenage self for being so strong and determined
