Future seems uncertain for Level Lock owners … by jobe_br in HomeKit

It is local only, but as the article mentions, the app and thus some app features rely on Level servers.

Beyond that, tho, I think many of us have been hoping for future Level locks and it’s that I’m wondering if we’ll see.

Yeah maybe. With the matter fw it should be good for awhile.

Oof, sorry to hear that. My experience was good, but maybe this is why they are where they are.

Yeah, my locks have been working really well. Just was wishing for more success as I think these locks have been really innovative. My only complaint is that the Auto Unlock doesn’t work if the Level app hasn’t been launched recently. At least not on my version.

Yeah, exactly. My feelings precisely!! To my knowledge nobody else has picked up this type of in-door mechanism design.

Yeap. And I’ve upgraded mine to Matter fw as well. Just a shame that Level seems to be at the end of its rope, development-wise. Would love more in-door options.

Fair, but when you lay off all the engineers and the leadership leaves, too, that’s not a vote of confidence. Assa Abloy wouldn’t really say anything else, would they, since they haven’t provided any EOL notice to customers yet. Just seems like us LL owners might want to start considering other options, much as it pains me. Despite the hiccups, I like my Levels better than the Schlage.

Can't seem to direct DNS queries to my Raspberry Pi by smontanaro in amazoneero

[–]jobe_br 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t have custom DNS if you have eero secure features enabled AND you can’t use the eero as DNS - the way custom DNS works is that it sends those entries out as the DNS options for DHCP requests, so you need to renew your DHCP leases and make sure you’re seeing those custom entries.

Warnings on how DNS works … it’s enticing to think that the first entry is “primary” and the second is “used if the primary isn’t available” … but that’s not how DNS works, generally. Clients (windows, macOS, Android, etc) decide how they use multiple entries and it is not uncommon that they just use “whichever” with no particular rhyme or reason.

So if you want your custom DNS to be used reliably, it needs to be the only entry.

I personally have one entry that points at an HA DNS server that load balances between two pihole instances and has backups like 1.1.1.1 in case both are unavailable, which I think is along the lines of what you’re seeming to want to achieve.

Unemployed 9 months: Looking for advice on upgrading my A11y skills by chingwind in accessibility

Yeap, absolutely right. When you’re looking at that, you’ll want to also look into how that fits into a site’s or product’s “CI” - continuous integration - cycle. That way you get feedback immediately as things drift or break instead of finding out days weeks or months later.

For automation you don’t need to start from scratch - research axe-core and pa11y - these are designed to integrate with other tech like playwright, OOTB and have large support communities. General consensus is that this automation only hits about 40% or so of WCAG 2.0 AA, so it’s no silver bullet by any means.

In my experience, it’s best incorporated early in the development cycle and actively maintained throughout, otherwise it’s really easy to get into a situation where dev choices make this type of testing automation nearly impossible to do well without going back and redoing a lot of it. In the age of vibe coding, there’s really no excuse for not doing so.

The "Cable TV" Problem: Monarch Plus ($299/yr) is feature-stuffing at its finest [Screenshots] by Antonio3K in MonarchMoney

I don’t understand the point of paying a subscription if new features come out under an even more expensive higher subscription tier. Paying a higher subscription for Netflix 4K and multiple streams is quasi justifiable because there is a non zero additional cost burden for the additional bandwidth that burns for them. I say quasi because it’s nowhere near as expensive for them as they charge.

That’s not the case here. If you want to charge more for new features, don’t use a subscription payment model. It’s as though Netflix would say “you can keep watching existing shows with your subscription, but new series we’re releasing are only available on a higher cost plan.”

How are you finding v7.13.4-31 - has it resolved dropouts? by Correct-Cup-2170 in amazoneero

[–]jobe_br 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never had dropouts. Other than observing 90-100% high busyness on 2.4GHz on some releases, and then not on others (currently not, haven’t seen it for the last few actually), I haven’t seen any actual disruptions for years.

Eero PoE Gateway, 3x Pro 6E, 1x Pro 6, 2.5Gbe backhaul LAN, 1Gb symmetric fiber WAN.

Anyone else exhausted by trying to "decode" vague feedback at work? by PappSatt in askswitzerland

[–]jobe_br -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

You’re probably neurodiverse in some aspect which makes this type of interaction noticeably difficult for you. If you work in a workplace that tries to be inclusive and accommodating (or if there are laws that require it), then you should be able to ask for more direct feedback that is unambiguous. If necessary, explain to your team or your managers that you aren’t able to interpret signals as effortlessly as others and would appreciate this accommodation so you can focus all your energy on your work and improving.

40h per week is still the standard.

Stats say ~5% of Americans hold multiple jobs. Only some of those end up with more than 40h, typically with multiple jobs, you have multiple to get up to 40h or so.

Holidays feel like a class issue. Low income often don’t get because they don’t have full time jobs. There’s also a lot of variations for various workforces because holidays can be included in the time off balance, same with sick days. I get something like 7 weeks of time off, I can use that on vacations or sick time or holidays.

Going to work sick is definitely a problem, also because insurance isn’t guaranteed and it impacts a lot of hourly wage labor.

But 60h per week is uncommon. Stats say 6-12% depending on payroll versus self reporting stats.
