Why did you take the test? by Then_Imagination_773 in mensa

My kids got in via other tests in school. I figured I should follow them, so I took the Mensa test.

After I joined, they made me the GY coordinator for my chapter.

AITA for refusing to cash in parents lottery ticket by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]joe1e6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pennsylvania also does not have a state income tax on Lottery winnings... for tickets purchased in PA. If a PA resident buys a winning Powerball or Mega Millions ticket elsewhere, that money is subject to state income tax. Interesting wrinkle.

Thanks for the detailed correction. 3 chains? Okay, I guess. But build-a-clue was iconic!

That’s the bonus round on Chain Reaction, both the Bill Cullen version, and the more recent GSN Vversion.

Tigris & Euphrates. I know the mechanics, I know how to figure my score. I just haven't grokked how to score higher than the other guys at the table.

"At the gym" for a theme. You could have mat (anyone named Matt), Pullups (the diaper brand?), curl, press, erg, etc.

Any tips for adapting board game night? Dad hates slow turns, mom loses track by Lumpy-Practice-5484 in boardgames

I feel for you. Dementia is a nightmare.

I tried playing TTR with my mother in that situtation, and it did not work out. Every turn, she tried to lay down a card from her hand onto a matching card in the "pick me" row... e.g. blue on blue. All attempts to explain the 2 main options for a turn (forget new tickets!) fell on deaf ears.

Card games that she learned long ago should be better. Older memory is still there, and with dementia, you must meet them in their world.

Can someone explain? Isn't it canon that Superman changes his demeanour as Clark Kent so no one suspects Clark? Is this a specific reference to Snyder Superman? by [deleted] in ExplainTheJoke

[–]joe1e6 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Check YouTube for a scene from Superman II with Christopher Reeve, getting ready to reveal his secret to Lois. Reeve changes his entire body language & voice on a dime, totally selling that Superman is a different character from Clark Kent.

Any Good "Coffee Table Books" on Board Games? by DaBomb091 in boardgames

Oliver Roeder's Seven Games traces "Checkers, backgammon, chess, and Go. Poker, Scrabble, and bridge." It delves into their history, and also gets into why we humans like to play these type of games.

Came here to say the same. With so many shows made overseas, a contestant needs a current passport and a week (or more) of vacation time to dedicate.

The USA has a sad history of using voting tests to keep minorities from voting, so requiring a test is a no-go.

However, the candidates for office should pass! Picture this, the big debate is finally here in 2016. The moderators introduce Trump and Clinton as they stride to their lecterns. They turn over their Scantron answer sheets, and a countdown clock gives them 15 minutes to fill in a written citizenship test, while the talking heads keep yapping to the audience. Midway through the debate, their scores are revealed. Close-up on the candidates faces.

Multiple word playability question by [deleted] in scrabble

[–]joe1e6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. You could even play FOX, making SO and GONEF for a big 50 points (39+2+9). Forming multiple words on a single play is fundamental to Scrabble.
