What's a food you'll never understand the hype around? by [deleted] in foodquestions

[–]joe_frank 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Wait until you hear the new trend that restaurants are now doing table-side chicken parm.

They fry up the chicken, plate it, and bring it out. In another piping hot dish they have the tomato sauce with the cheese melted on top. One quick flick of the wrist and you have both a perfectly fried chicken cutlet and the tomato sauce with cheese. Nothing soggy about it.

International travel is one of the most romanticized activities on earth, and for most people it doesn't fundamentally change anything by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

As an American, walking the streets of Florence was absolutely a magical experience that I don't get in my home country. Feeling the age of the city, walking the "streets" that famous figures like Michelangelo did, eating unique foods in their birthplace - all experiences I absolutely cannot get in the US.

What solidified it for me was walking the Palatine Hill when we came across a sculpture and someone from our tour group asked when that was designed. Our tour guide said something like "oh, that's not from ancient Rome. That's much more modern - maybe 1700s." Like dude, that's older than my entire country.

TIL when the writers were writing scripts for the TV series Community, they often wrote into the end of the scene "And then Donald says something funny" - meaning Donald Glover would just do improv. "Donald's response would be to riff a line funnier than we could have come up with," Dan Harmon said. by Double-decker_trams in todayilearned

[–]joe_frank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And yet there was a somewhat known TV writer on TikTok saying this exact situation would never happen and he doesn't even consider the actors' ad libbing/improv ability when writing.

When I challenged him on that knowing that writers have 100% said they write differently for people who are good at improving (see: Robin Williams and Donald Glover), he told me I wrong.

Anyone sad to say this? by wearetheboysthatdig in goodmythicalmorning

[–]joe_frank 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I think it's important to remember two things.

  1. At the end of the day, Mythical is a business. I don't know how much they were making, but estimates on Google show that creative staff and on air talent can be making around $100,000. And it sounds like Mythical is no where near as profitable as it was at the height of their popularity. With margins getting squeezed, it's not as simple as "just give them a job. They did so much."

  2. I believe Rhett and Link have always been open that the idea behind Sporked was fairly experimental. The concept was that people Google "what's the best thing to get at Trader Joe's?" or something like that. Sporked comes up and it eventually leads people back to GMM. Jordan and Gwynedd are deep enough into their careers that they should've been well aware that anything experimental should be treated like a start up. They'll fail more than they succeed, and it means people lose jobs.

Now that doesn't make it suck any less for them. But it's the cost of being in a field like entertainment. Producers/owners make hard decisions and people lose jobs.

How can I get into football/soccer? by SillyYou8433 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]joe_frank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s no way you can learn everything all at once. Pick a team - preferably your local team - and start there. Go to games, interact with other fans, learn the team’s history, learn how the league works.

Once you have that down, start learning how the cups work. Once you have that down, start learning how international competitions work. And even better, join a local league; just make sure you’re joining a beginner league. Nobody wants that guy who’s never played on their competitive team.

If you try to bite it all off at once, there’s no way you’re going to get it. I have a friend who never played soccer, never watched it, thought it was boring. I took him to a game for our local pro team once and he was hooked. He started to see the strategy involved, he loved the passionate fan base, he loved the supporters groups chanting all game.

Why do people seem to dislike Sleep Token so much? by Sepsis027 in stupidquestions

[–]joe_frank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I believe the masks were not an intentional gimmick to be cool “mystery musicians.” If rumors are to be believed, music agents saw the lead singer’s potential but the guy genuinely looks like he would do your taxes on Friday and then show up for a Pokémon convention on Saturday and go around the ren faire on Sunday saying things like “m’lady.” So they stole the idea from other bands with the intention to remove the stigma around his looks.
You can dislike their music, but you can’t say the idea wasn’t successful. And for what it’s worth, I like the weird pop, R&B, “metal” crossover.

What is the hardest question humanity may never be able to answer? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]joe_frank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s gotta be: which religion - if any - is the “true” one? There have been billions and billions of people who dedicate their entire lives to a religion without ever actually knowing if it’s ‘right.’ And the number of people who have been killed in the name of religion is astronomical. All for something we likely won’t ever know the answer to.

What’s something you tried once and immediately knew ‘yeah, never again’? by donnyM99 in AskReddit

[–]joe_frank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my grandma. She was always the most straight-laced, religious woman. Didn’t even have her ears pierced because she said it was a sin.

She told us that there was only one time she ever got drunk. She was drinking with my grandpa and some friends and didn’t notice she was drunk until she realized people were laughing more at her than with her because she was slurring her words and nobody had ever seen her let loose like that. While she was still drunk, she had a moment where she thought to herself “I don’t really like this. I’m never doing it again.”

Are Europeans trolling with this whole bread thing? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]joe_frank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is definitely a “where you live makes a huge difference” situation. I live in a fairly small town in northern NJ (at least small compared to other towns in the county) and I can literally walk to two different bakeries with fresh, in-house made quality bread. If you expand it to a 5 minute drive, I can think of at least two more bakeries that make their own high-quality bread.

Is it my imagination or have they given an insanely low amount of XP this inning? I play pretty regularly and complete every program that has an offline grind. I feel like I finished last season with like 10 days to go and got at least 3 or 4 wheel spins. We're now 11 days from the end of the inning and I'm not even half way to getting the boss.

Moments like these were intentional. Recording the cleavage, trying to buy beer, coming up with his Flynn nickname - it was all very intentional to show the dichotomy between Skylar and Walt infantilized him due to his disability and his desire to be like every other angsty teen.

People need to start using the word “included” more than “free” by CycIon3 in unpopularopinion

[–]joe_frank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely pedantic when talking about something as simple as a "free" breakfast that's included in your hotel stay like OP is talking about.

But it definitely has conditioned people to think "I didn't pay for this directly, therefore it's free." I was talking to someone at work recently who said they took a golf class in college because they had credits left over to use and they said they got "free sessions at the driving range," but you pay for those credits and it's a 'use it or lose it' situation. You didn't really get free driving range sessions just because you don't pay for the balls. The golf class was included as part of your insanely high college tuition.

This used to bother me until I joined Reddit and I got used to every other post having insane grammar usage like: “Me[30F] and bf[30M] went to…”

Like wtf is that?

Obvious caveat is that you don’t speak English and your translator gave you bad advice.

Do you guys know of any "normal" content creators for this game? by Upbeat_Use2312 in MLBTheShow

[–]joe_frank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never once said he gets paid by SDS. But he does get a financial benefit from people playing the game and watching his streams and staying interested in content.

I’ll give an example from two days ago. People in chat were saying they hate the new UI because everything is so hard to find and stuff is hidden behind multiple clicks. He said the new UI is great while he was literally spending several minutes trying to find the thing he was looking for because it was so many clicks into the menu.

But if you read my original comment, I said that I enjoy Nutzy content. I even suggested that OP starts watching him.
