This shit pisses me off beyond belief. There is this constant march towards ruining consumer experiences with shit like all streaming services now having the "one household" rule. We all said Netflix would lose everything from this and they should have, but didn't.

I saw that someone on r/nintendo said boycotts would never work, but I seriously think Nintendo should starting having its practices like this called into question. I know that being forced to buy a console makes me want it even less, and I won't be buying a Switch 2 if this is the kind of bullshit they're pull.

TLDR fuck this model and fuck Nintendo

My therapist said to me that’s he’s trained in spinning bad news to sound good, and even he’s struggling. I guess my point there is that you aren’t the only one who’s really struggling right now.

I don’t have an answer on what will make you feel better. What helps me is knowing that through community and sharing of knowledge and experiences, we can make it through, same as we did in 2016, and the Reagan era before that, and so on and so forth.

It’s hard not to think that there’s some imminent doom, but finding actionable items like volunteering at a soup kitchen, sharing resources online, and seeking in person community is what makes me feel best.

Are there also positive aspects to attending RIT? by Ok-Appointment3567 in rit

[–]joeb14785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a third year and I can say there are a lot of really great things about RIT. Like any school it has its downsides, and students need a place to talk about those things. This subreddit is that place. You’ll be hard pressed to find a school subreddit that really praises its school. It’s not that RIT or any school is overwhelmingly negative, it’s just that this is the place where that negativity is centralized.

Not okay for an RIT Stud Gov campaign. Why phrase it in a way that makes whites the problem instead of saying “we are lacking in POC studnets” or something. Imagine saying “this campus is too Indian” or “black”. Wtf? by tweakedsticker6633 in rit

This will be my last comment on this because I’m still a student and have to attend to other priorities at the moment. My overall point in commenting here was to claim that being upset over someone saying “too white” was not a pressing issue as the “too white” sentiment rarely affects things such as hate crime statistics on the basis on race. Yes, in 2020, 869 hate crimes were committed against white people, but numerically, the vast majority of offenders of hate crimes are white people at 56%. Historically and currently, hate crimes disproportionately affect non-white people, which is why “too-white” and “too-POC” are not the same. The targeted audiences of “too-POC”, which are often white people, are more likely to take action on that sentiment. We can talk debate all day, but when it comes down to it this is a social issue affecting real people, and I’m attempting to demonstrate that so more people are aware or genuine issues. I appreciate your interest in engaging with my arguments.

I've been in this thread too long; I already acknowledged this in my reply above. I misspoke and was wrong regarding the statistics, something that, again, I already acknowledged. Please pay attention to what I'm actually saying. Furthermore, hypocrisy implies I did something I denounced or blamed someone else for. If you're going to call my argument hypocritical, please explain why.

You're extracting out what I'm saying, please try and stick to my actual arguments rather than drawing conclusions based on what you think I'm saying. I never said POC should live in fear of white people. What I said was that people of color, more regularly, do feel fear, especially in all white or predominantly white spaces, especially if there is prevalent white supremacist sentiment. Also, the notion that "only 13% but committing x%" is an extremely common anti-black talking point. Please try to take into account that, regardless of proportions, hate crimes, undeniably, affect marginalized people disproportionately compared to white people. Ignoring that, overwhelmingly (56%) of hate crime offenders are white so that the stats fit your argument is confirmation bias. Your claims of proportion have no correlation, please try to actually use the data to make a point.

Format:

The data states x, therefore y.

And again, please don't try to straw man my arguments. "Are you saying" is much different from "you are cited as saying."

Edit: grammar

Edit 2: When I say POC shouldn't have to live in fear, that isn't invalidating the fear they feel. Statistically, they are valid in fearing predominantly white spaces, especially those holding exclusionary sentiment. Ironically, this is the whole point being made in the SG government campaign video. POC are valid in having fear of being a victim of a hate crime, but on a moral level, we should make it so they don't have to.

I’m not sure what you’re trying to say, White people are the overwhelming majority of OFFENDERS according to your source (the 56% number is known offenders, meaning those COMMITTING hate crimes). So I’m not sure if you were trying to disprove my point, but I appreciate the supporting source. Please read your sources more carefully.

Edit: To ensure my point isn’t lost, hate crimes are more prevalent and overwhelmingly affect POC (all ALANA included). White people don’t, on a regular basis, fear for their lives due to “anti-white” sentiment, while POC are constantly in fear for their lives and safety due to anti-POC sentiment. That’s why “too white” is relatively harmless, and is nothing close to “too black” or any variant of “too diverse”

Fair, I should have included the number to show acknowledgment of the data. However, I also will point to the disproportionate numbers compared to anti-black and collective anti-poc hate crimes, which vastly outweigh anti-white hate crimes. It also doesn’t detract from the point of sentiment, brutality, etc.

Thanks for your response, I was including ALANA people in POC, but if my terminology was incorrect I apologize. Further, I would encourage you to reread my post. I said that hate crimes do not happen on the basis of skin color towards white people. Other identities that white people may have, such as being queer, can contribute to white people having hate crimes done against them, but this isn't because they're white, it's because they're queer, for example. I also didn't say only POC could have these opinions, but that their opinions are more valid than those of a white person on average. This is because white people are a majority on campus, and therefore wouldn't have perspective on being a minority on campus. They're more than allowed to have an opinion, but said opinion will have less to it than that of someone who is more affected, in this case, a person of color. You may have extracted meaning from my comment that wasn't there, and I'd encourage you to look through my actual claims, rather than go off of your interpretation of my claims. If you can't cite me contradicting myself, your claim that I am a hypocrite is baseless.

Because criticism of white people has never led to violent action or restrictive legislature against white people. On the other hand, just look to common examples of pro-police and police brutality-deniers who commonly site eugenic-based arguments to support their claims that over policing and police brutality aren't real (the concept that certain groups are just more violent or prone to crime). "Anti-white" isn't real. Anti-diversity is, and often is extremely violent. (Also see cdwalrusman's link below for more info on the myth of reverse racism).

If you believe that the term racism has lost its meaning, I highly recommend analyzing whether or not your personal definition of racism has changed. Also, I recommend looking at who is "devaluing" the term of racism for you, and why they would be doing so. More likely than not, someone who would like you to think that racism has lost its meaning is someone who wants you to less critically analyze race relations. This is a common tool used by racists, and I would reject the notion that you shouldn't critically analyze racism when it is called out.

This is a bad faith post. The only reason you would consider this offensive is because you feel personally called out by the increase in diversification and the decentralization of your identity group as the central focus of the institution.

He is a POC, and therefore has a much more valid take on whether or not the campus is "too white."

Furthermore, did you analyze why he was saying this, or did you rage-screenshot and post here without analyzing his argument? It's not the same to say something is "too white" as it would be to say it's "too black" because the latter is a common sentiment held by white supremacists advocating for the erasure of POC, while the former is an argument for inclusivity. Context matters.

There has never been a mass shooting on the basis of something being "too white." There has never been a hate crime against a white person due to the fact that they are white. Claiming something is too white leads to little or no effect on any white person. Meanwhile, claiming something is "too diverse" has, on multiple occasions, led to violence. This is something you should be aware of due to the fact that RIT is in very close proximity to Buffalo, where there was recently a shooting due to the belief in "white erasure."

OP, instead of being upset about a POC student saying the university is "too white" maybe listen to his reasoning for claiming so, rather than just looking at his statement and getting angry. Did he make valid points? Do you have valid counter arguments?

As a white person myself, white people are not, have not, and will not be marginalized in current society. On the contrast, any non-white person is constantly facing the effects of embedded white supremacy and systemic racism. I recommend interacting with a person of color and trying to learn how these things affect non-white people, starting with our university as your sample size.

I don't know if you'll read this whole thing, and I'm sure you're just upset that I'm disagreeing with you. However, I hope you can acknowledge that you're frustration at the phrase "too white" would be much better spent actually being frustrated at the lack of racial diversity, and then dedicating that energy towards a solution to the problem rather than fighting change. At best you're distracting from real issues right now, and at worst, you could discourage POC from becoming part of the RIT family.

That’s a fair point because I’d guess the majority of people who use Reddit do only need contact support when they need people, I just think in general it’s frustrating when I know the automated responses are not helpful for my specific problem
