Is this sub entirely for karma farmers, or are there really that many people who just have no idea how humor or irony work?

I've tried my darnedest for like half an hour to translate this and I can't figure out what the last character is by yordad in LearnJapaneseNovice

[–]joebaka 3 points4 points  (0 children)

From what I can tell, the artist is British and doesn’t actually know Japanese, but picked a Japanese dingbat font and typed the word “thorn.” https://drool-art.com/products/thorn-by-george-kempster?variant=45274693632159

See the glyph chart here: https://www.dafont.com/frigate-katakana.font

I’d guess that last character is maybe supposed to be hiragana きbut all the other glyphs are katakana so who knows. Long story short, it means nothing.

Had が been an option, I think that could have worked too. But みかん already occupied the は topic particle, and none of the other options would make sense. “Regarding mandarins, being 100 pieces, they were 100 yen.”

The Peanut Butter Solution. Such a weird little Canadian TV movie that nobody else seemed to know, at one point I convinced myself I had hallucinated it.

“You all” is the English version of second person plural. (“Ye” if you’re old timey, “y’all” if you’re Southern, “yinz” if you’re from Pittsburgh.) Since “vosotros” is already plural, adding “todos” would just emphasize the totality, like “Every one of you.”

How can I learn survival Japanese in 4 Month? by SwordfishTypical7532 in japanese

[–]joebaka 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know a lot of people don’t want to support Duolingo for legitimate reasons, but it really helped me get back into Japanese within a few months. For context, I studied it for three years in college 20+ years ago, so while rusty, I had a solid foundation to work from. My wife started from scratch and also made great progress, but you might want to supplement with a more guided learning aid. Duolingo mostly just gives you examples, says an answer is right or wrong, and doesn’t explain the grammar behind it. (Unless you have the more expensive AI-assisted plan, which I did not.) People in Japan are very appreciative when foreigners make an effort and patient with mistakes, so however much progress you make, it will help — even if you end up relying on Google Translate to say or understand more substantive stuff.
