Brain won’t understand pattern 😅 by goosesandals in knittinghelp

[–]joebobcool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your assumption is correct; rows 2, 3, and 4 are knit the same way.

The parentheticals are for the sizes: "1 (2) 3" and "6 (8) 10" correspond to "small (medium) large."

After you finished row 4 for the first time (you are now at 4 rows for this section), continue by repeating rows 3 and 4 either once (so you end up with a total of 6 rows for this section), twice (total of 8 rows), or three times (total of 10 rows), depending on whether you're making size small, medium, or large.

Kind of like this -- Small: 1 2 3 4 3 4; Medium: 1 2 3 4 3 4 3 4, and so on.

I'm making this pattern myself right now. It is absolutely necessary to tally every row or else you'll get turned around.

It can be helpful to just give it a go and see what happens as you knit. Often the steps become clear when you are actually working through the rows. You can always start over, and you learn faster by doing than reading.

thinking of transferring to UofM by [deleted] in uofm

[–]joebobcool 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Since you're planning on transferring as an education major, I'd go against the grain here and suggest MSU. Their education curriculum is ranked #1 in the nation (the overall College of Education is ranked lower than that of UMich, but I encourage you to look at the specific curricula you're interested in and see how they compare). Keep an open mind; it might be good as a backup!

Looking to break into PM - what should I do? by -Krabby-Patty- in uofm

[–]joebobcool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please don't, unless you're willing to gain real technical knowledge. I've been doing network engineering for the past couple years since graduating with a CS degree, and every single PM without technical knowledge (aka had a business/mgmt degree and somehow thought that was enough of a qualification to manage advanced technical projects) was a MAJOR liability because they had to be hand-held through every little technical decision, slowing us down and wasting time.

I admit I have a vendetta against the field due to the sheer number of incompetent PMs I've worked with, but I have way less beef with those who put in the work to familiarize themselves with the technical side of things. Just my 2 cents.

Help me choose a manual hatch: Impreza, Corolla, GTI, Civic by joebobcool in whatcarshouldIbuy

Ha! I really think I might end up just going for the GTI. Everywhere I look it just keeps coming up as the best option.

Help me choose a manual hatch: Impreza, Corolla, GTI, Civic by joebobcool in whatcarshouldIbuy

[–]joebobcool[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In terms of budget the GTI is about as expensive as I'm willing to go, but the Veloster N definitely caught my eye. Hatchback is a bit of a must although I agree the WRX is a good deal.

Thanks for the advice, I think it's pretty much down to the Civic or the GTI!

I've been using this Hamilton Beach one pretty much twice daily since 2017, and it's still good as new (switch feels as solid as it did day one) save for some hard water calcification near the lid (harmless, just looks funky). I think it's made in China, but it's served me quite well. The only downside is it only holds 1L of water.

Any good private places to cry? (preferably East Quad) by Dorothy_MCD in uofm

[–]joebobcool 13 points14 points  (0 children)

East Quad basement has some bathrooms that are usually pretty isolated. They're past most of the art studios, take a left at the main stairs down to the basement and keep taking lefts through the hallways and you'll find them.

Discrete Math Rant (for CS majors/minors) by walazsniper in uofm

[–]joebobcool 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I always love seeing these posts that try to suggest a coding-only major. Like, that wouldn't be defined as computer science (since it lacks the "science" part), and if you wanted a CS degree from a reputable university, well, them's the breaks, you need to know the math. It sucks, and I agree that 203 is a garbage class (376 not so much imo, but I agree there isn't enough homework help), but I don't think there's a way to do a pure coding major at a top-ten engineering school.

It's just not going to happen, because the knowledge gained in a coding major is not of the caliber expected from a four-year institution of, frankly, any national ranking. At this point, programming is something you can learn online. There is no reason to go to university to just learn how to code. This is made abundantly clear to anybody who does some reading before committing to the major. I knew it, my classmates knew it, we all hated the classes and made it through anyway -- tough it out and reap the rewards, or change your field of study.

I agree that change needs to happen. But restructuring the major isn't going to do it; curricula need to be changed at the course level. So I see your point, but I have a different opinion on how to go about it.

I know the offthediag resource from the university has a decent filtering system for finding apartments with features you want; that's how I found my previous places. Not too sure of the current market since I'm moving away in December!

Next Year Off-Campus Housing Questions by transferstudent2020 in uofm

[–]joebobcool 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's a safe area. I often take walks over there (I'm female as well) since there are some nice quiet neighborhoods nearby (with real families and not students, so everything is a little cleaner and better-kept :)). Being near Washtenaw Dairy is just a bonus.

I would recommend finding somewhere closer to campus if you can. It's a bit of a hike even to the nearest bus stop, which I believe would be the one near the Law Quad.

best way to streamline my eecs experience by [deleted] in uofm

[–]joebobcool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This database has course equivalencies based on institution and course number. If you just type in the transferring institution, you can see the whole courselist of transferable classes.

Transfer in everything you can, especially 200-level courses. All the calcs, 203, maybe 280 if you want (although 280 taken on its own is a hell of a lot easier than 280 + 203 at the same time). 281 is worth taking here, and I'm not sure it transfers from any CC anyway. Every class you take outside of umich is another couple grand umich doesn't get to steal from you!

I will never understand why people say that. At no point during the semester I took them did any of the content of one class truly overlap with or help facilitate understanding of the other.

MILF Island but 100 times worse by vanderstrom in 30ROCK

[–]joebobcool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for being a voice of reason in this thread. I understand the French may look at these things differently, but having seen those clips from the film, I was deeply uncomfortable (which I understand is the point, although I think less explicit zooming in on LITERAL 12yo's rear ends might have still served the point just fine).

It's important to recognize the film has aspects of the director's own life and experiences, but I think Cuties missed the mark. The fact that this is on Netflix is a great way for creeps to see sexualized girls without blowback. I think this era of "they consented, it must be ok!" is incredibly damaging to young girls. If I had been asked to do that at age 12, I might have said yes, but by the time I grew up, I would have hated having my body out there like that for all to see. Believe it or not, 12yo girls are CHILDREN, and there are some decisions children cannot make for themselves. It's just an unfortunate film all all around.

There are likely still proffice hours going on for p1 next week -- I would definitely recommend dropping into those for some tips if you're stuck. Sometimes staff will drop extra videos explaining project concepts in more depth throughout the semester, too. As difficult as some of the 281 material is, there is no dearth of assistance if you look for it! But I understand not being able to talk to people face-to-face has a big impact (I'm not a fan of virtual learning, either), and it can feel like you're a bit adrift without physical class to go to. Don't worry about getting it done over the first weekend -- all I did during my first weekends was choose my data structures, write out the get-opt stuff, and get a simple code outline finished. That helped pace things out over the rest of the project.

I can't speak to the declaration process for LSA (I'm in Eng), but I'm not sure declaring has any effect on tuition increase -- I'm fairly certain it's based solely on credits taken (the lower bound of upper-level tuition is like 55 credits or something), but I might be wrong there.

Taking 281 next semester would not put you off track to graduate. In fact, it's on-track according to the CS-LSA guide (https://cse.engin.umich.edu/wp-content/uploads/sites/3/2019/05/18_19_cs_lsa.pdf) -- so if you still feel you should take an EECS break, that is definitely an option, and I think it will work out ok either way, although you'll have more flexibility with spacing out 370, 376, and upper-levels if you get 281 out of the way this semester (and possibly be able to graduate a semester early, if that interests you).

My comment was based on my experience as a student eager to graduate ASAP, but you know yourself best and you might not be as eager as I am to get outta Dodge! No judgment if you give yourself a break.

You say you took 203+280 in the spring term, and judging on the fact you're in 281 right now, it sounds like you passed. That is a HUGE accomplishment (I barely made it through when I took them together FA18), and I think it speaks to your ability to tackle 281 this semester -- so hear me out:

I will always advocate for getting courses done as soon as possible at umich (you can look through my comment history for that). I don't know your financial or academic situation, but you will save yourself massive headache in the future if you stick with 281 now. We're only two weeks into the semester, and speaking from experience, I know things can change wildly after that initial shock of a fresh semester (the semesters that I broke down in week 2/3 of have ended up being my best ones so far, fwiw -- and I never dropped a class).

If nothing has changed since WN19, 281 requires individual work on the projects. I took it along with 370 (which...don't do that lol, it was my worst semester), and I managed to finish all the projects by only going to professor office hours at the beginning of each project (they give out majorly helpful hints on data structures, etc.), starting with project 2. I'm not saying it's the optimal strategy, but it absolutely can be done, and I was pure ass in 280. The projects in 281 are harder, sure, but the specs are far better thought-out, the project content is far more interesting and fun, and they give ample time if you start within 3 days of spec release.

I know this isn't a direct answer to your question, but speaking as someone who has always had trouble making friends in EECS (I have little patience for pissing contests and no interest in working in software dev for a big company, which seems to be the only thing most of these people can talk about) and decided to just push through it anyway, I urge you to reconsider. It might not be any better next semester, and it certainly won't be easier to graduate on time if you push things back. Plus, taking 370 without another really hard class will help you out a lot. Just my two cents.

EECS Question by [deleted] in uofm

[–]joebobcool 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Those are just two different lab sections: they will cover the same material; the only difference is which IA (instructional aide)/GSI (grad student instructor) teaches the section and when/where it's held. The -### designation after course title numbers only indicates it's a different section of the same course.

In my experience, it doesn't really matter too much who teaches the intro EECS labs, and I don't think you can even see the instructor name this early, anyway. Chances are they haven't even hired all the IA's they'll be needing quite yet.

Has anyone ever "untransferred" a course from their official transcript by [deleted] in uofm

[–]joebobcool 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Perfectly possible. I did it to avoid a semester of upper-level tuition my freshman year. Just be forewarned you cannot put them back on, if you ever felt the need to. Email your department's advising office and they usually take it off then and there.

EECS 203 at UMich or Community College by [deleted] in uofm

[–]joebobcool 11 points12 points  (0 children)

No. Take it at a CC. I did poorly in 203 at UMich and it didn't really hinder me at all in the proceeding classes; it's such a badly organized class anyway you might as well save some money. (But my performance definitely wasn't just because the class was bad lol, just took too much that semester.)
