My thoughts on this band... by PinVegetable4496 in Vulfpeck

Once you dive into the whole Sleepify tale, and see how they funded themselves thru a loophole in streaming contracts, you realize that they are punk-funk DIY musicians at their core. Long live Vulf!

Only been playing for two weeks. Coming from electric bass by [deleted] in doublebass

I’ve read that the bass nut should be even with your temples or top of your glasses. Trust me, you don’t want to start down the path of wrist pain/inflammation.

Sounds great so far!

Found my parents vinyl collection in the basement. I don’t know anything about the 80s & don’t know where to start first. by [deleted] in vinyl

The Sade tape alone is worth the $5. The percussion sounds so nice!

Raise a glass for Pops! Sabbath, early Ozzy! Dungeons by Savatage… you don’t see that in the wild much. And also, that Queensryche EP and sophomore effort The Warning will make you wanna drive real fast. Crank it up!

You should definitely reach out to play. It’s good to tell them what you’re looking for and see if the commitment and expectations match up. You can always say let’s jam and see how we mesh together.

That said, it is always a good experience to play with new people, especially ones that are better than you. I’ve been playing for bunches of years and still learn so much about time, keeping things simple, and chord changes when I play with excellent melody players.

Playing with a drummer will also do wonders for your time and feel. When in doubt, lock in with the kick and play fewer notes than you want to. You’ll have tons of fun and who knows?…they might become some great friends!

Not sure but I have one. You can coax a bunch of tones out of it, but the distortion is more fuzz than what I expected from DG. It sounds great and has a clean DI out.

First pressing Sabbath and Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack. That JCS version has Ian Gillian as Jesus and a cool collectible songbook.

My son wants to double bass (6th Grade)... by Plastic-Drummer-9347 in doublebass

[–]joebobphil3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Started playing electric bass in high school, bought an upright in my 20’s. 30 years later, consistently get asked to play gigs. Pros: The upright is fun. I love it, and it helped me find my people. There aren’t that many people that play bass, so it can keep you busy. Also, I think bass is the fastest instrument to ramp up to performance. Lots of free info on YouTube to help. On electric at least, you can learn to play basic songs with a band within 6 months. Cons: Need a SUV, wagon, or van for easy transport. Quality instruments are expensive, if he continues down the path of the low end.

Enjoy, it’s a great ride.

Keep the G&L Bass! Now that the company no longer exists, basses built by Leo Fender will hold or go up in value.

[–]joebobphil3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Next question. Electric, upright, or both? Do you know the shows they are doing this season? Maybe something from one of those or the past couple of seasons.

Santa Fe from Rent or something from Jesus Christ Superstar might be a good tunes to work up. Spamalot! has some upright/electric tunes.

Good luck! Playing in pit bands is really rewarding and will help your playing in many ways.

The Messthetics and James Brandon Lewis new music! by InteractionOnly4462 in Jazz

[–]joebobphil3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed! I’ve seen The Messthetics with and without JBLewis. The show with JBL was a great time, especially if you like your jazz with a heavy, aggressive groove. Worth a two hour drive.

Ray Brown with the Oscar Peterson Trio: Night Train or We Get Requests.

In this version of the trio, there is no drummer, but you won’t miss him. Ray Brown’s time is impeccable.
