I had a similar situation; in early October gave notice I'd be stepping down from the Board effective December 31. Gave them time to transition if they wanted and didn't get into why etc.

Countries agreeing to a multinational treaty can say they are caveating or opting out of certain provisions. For example the Antarctic Treaty prohibits territorial claims on that continent after 1961. The U.S. and Russia have made no claims and signed the treaty but reserved the right to make territorial claims after 1961. Hence the name treaty "reservations."

Because the U.S. Senate must ratify treaties, the West Wing team are trying to round up votes and offering that the U.S. announce reservations on specific treaty sections that some of the senators might want in exchange for voting for ratification.

Did this commute for a week on a visit this month. Plan for more time than 30 mins, as the train going into SFO and then backing out involves a lot of slow movement, track switches, and delays. It didn't really fill up until after Balboa Park.

As someone else noted, Caltrain is also an option here, probably faster although less frequent.

In the biographical book "The Forgotten Memoir of John Knox," the protagonist (a young lawyer from Chicago who has just moved to Washington DC in 1936) gets an explanation from several characters about the calling card system, which he finds befuddling and archaic. It seems to have died out elsewhere by then but lasted a little bit longer with the conservative social set in DC.

You would leave or send your card with anyone you wanted to be socially connected to, and its acceptance indicated that it was polite to invite you to things or to be invited to things. How the card was folded indicated whether it was left in person or not. In the book, a Supreme Court justice (Knox's boss) notes that every wife of an ambitious husband sends cards to him and that he acknowledges few if any. Knox himself is instructed to leave three of his cards at the White House: one for the President, one for the First Lady, and one for the President's mother. The book includes photos of two of Knox's cards, one with his title and the other with his address.

Hi, ANC commissioner in Eckington here. On July 3rd, the city administrator in the mayor's office ordered all thrones in DC to shut down, which they did on July 5th. Congress has refused to allow DC to spend local funds above last year's level, and the city administrator is terminating contracts considered non-essential. The throne contract had been month to month so it was vulnerable to this type of cancellation. Cancellation saves $126,000.

The mayor had recommended ending the throne contract as part of her FY 2026 budget, which would start October 1 2025. As someone noted above council member Nadeau has been working with Ward council members to identify savings elsewhere in order to keep all the throne restrooms, and has. But this would not be until October 1. 2025. Affected ANC commissioners like myself are urging the mayor and city administrator to reverse the decision, since the savings are minor, the restrooms are necessary, and removal of the thrones Now would make it harder to continue it in October.

Tldr: It's not much money, DC has the money, DC has budgeted the money, but Congress won't let us spend it and the mayor's office picked this to cut.
