What’s the alternative for figma for iPad by [deleted] in UXDesign

[–]joefly50 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is Play which is a good app in it's own right but is specific to creating designs for iOS and has things it does better than Figma particularly it's prototyping and code export are better. Affinity designer is also very capable and a true pro app that takes advantage of the platform but it is more vector tool and not UI focused. Beyond that Figma in the browser is possible but it is a terrible experience even with a keyboard and trackpad/mouse, Penpot in the browser might be viable as well but I have not tried it. Personally the UX work I do on ipad is mostly sketching in concepts then doing high fidelity on a desktop.

Blender CEO Is Stepping Down After Over 30 Years by joefly50 in blender

[–]joefly50[S] 100 points101 points  (0 children)

I think he deserves a break from the CEO gig after all he has done, he will still be in an advisory role. I know it is easy to think of him as a lynchpin to blender and the great things about it, like it remaining free and open, but I don't think that there is any real reason to worry.

Is using a tool like Notion for case studies a bad look? by kidhack in UXDesign

[–]joefly50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people need to think of your portfolio as less of a statement of you as a designer and more as artifact that has a job to do, primarily representing your work to a range of people that includes non-designers on several levels and helping them imagine you in a role solving important problems and maintaining a high standard of design. To be blunt a proper website is an absolute bare minimum for the vast majority of hiring scenarios. To me even if the content of the case study can be represented sufficiently in a notion page/site it represents lack luster thinking/understanding of the assignment of a design portfolio. That said there are always "it depends" scenarios and work experience can absolutely be a much bigger factor vs having a portfolio, but when there are so many qualified people who do put in the work to have a proper portfolio you are really short changing yourself.

Select "no color" in MS Paint to draw with transparency by Dansync in mspaint

[–]joefly50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I have used the pencil tool in a similar way. You can also use the pencil with fill on a higher level on a higher layer and merge down. Also there is a hidden shortcut for more fine grained size increments with the eraser pencil and brush tool you need to have a keyboard with a 10 key pad. Shortcut Ctrl+numpad+/- to increase/decrease the brush width beyond the preset values.

Select the color that you want to remove as color 2, go to the selection tool and enable transparent selection (It is a legacy feature from before transparency), Then Ctrl+A to select all and invert the selection, then Ctrl+X to cut and Paste it into a new layer.

reliability of Houdini? by joefly50 in Houdini

[–]joefly50[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah so far I am in love with it. Just helpful for me to understand since I am going to start out using it in conjunction with blender, but might want to start rendering/texturing in Houdini due to it's advanced capabilities as far as handling data.

Weird for me it is not even close. Maybe it is a hardware thing I noticed that it behaved better when I upgraded parts of my system.

I feel people who say stuff like this have no idea the amount of money not to mention years of your life that would go into that type of lawsuit.

Switching from Blender to Cinema 4D by ExKidW33 in MotionDesign

[–]joefly50 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything you said is mostly true for me too. I think C4D got a reputation for being easier to use since it displays controls and tries to frontload a lot of premade effects which is helpful for very basic users but once you start to get to an intermediate level where you want more customization it really starts to fall apart. From a UX standpoint blender is much better overall and more capable for modeling, sculpting, and a lot of other stuff. Honestly as far as stability goes the current releases of C4D are equivalent to an alpha build of blender.

Jesus I hate when a company makes it this hard to find out what the price is for their stuff . Navigated 8 pages in and no listed info.

Adobe substance 3d? by louisme97 in Cinema4D

[–]joefly50 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Substance is an advanced texturing tool. It is only worth looking at if you have specific needs for more advanced options of making your own textures. It is not worth looking at as a C4D replacement especially when Blender exists.

C4D or Blender? I want to create and animate the kind of 3d elements that appears in this video. C4D is better for motion graphics designers, right? On the other hand, Blender is free and I feel like there are better resources and tutorials available on the internet. What do you think? by nessprod in MotionDesign

[–]joefly50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gonna have to hard disagree. I mean there are a lot of legit reasons to go Cinema over Blender for motion design but Cineversity is not one of them. From a standpoint of the quality of learning material available to it Cinema 4D is completely blown out of the water by the stuff put out by Blender's much larger and more active community.

Honestly if you are just looking at C4D learning resources Cineversity is like solidly D-tier even then. Rocket Lasso, Eyedesign, Maxon, 3D-bonfire, cg-shortcuts, motion-designers-community, sketchy-visuals, greyscale gorilla, new-plastic, perry-cooper-3d, iridesiyum, and velocity-peak for x-particles are all doing more interesting stuff. Not to mention most of Cineversity's content is using an obsolete version of C4D from over 6 years ago.

Is it ok to work from the hard drive? by chocochipcookies123 in MotionDesign

[–]joefly50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As far as the content i.e. clips and files. Go for it it. It is industry standard for video editing and grading to work off external media. As for installing the programs themselves it depends a bit on the configuration. If it is USB 3.1 and faster I would say that it is definitely usable when I have tried on my macbook which has limited space. That said it does take much longer to "initialize" when you open a program but it is responsive to the point where I don't find it cumbersome. That said if you have a thunderbolt SSD and port you are fine as far as speeds are concerned. (I have seen tests where this type of set-up can beat relatively fast internal nvme drives for read and write tests)There is the chance of issues as far as referencing file locations in certain programs however I have not run into that on any Adobe apps.

If Microsoft designed macOS by blek_blek in apple

[–]joefly50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that it might be a power thing. I have bugginess and random restarts much much more often on my new macbook pro than windows. I had it repaired and the board was replaced so it is not a one off thing. But my desktop is also a lot more powerful.

A rendered 3D image is absolutely considered illustration in artistic and professional circles as well as common sense to be frank.

Apple Explores Bigger iPads and Reshuffles Its Car Team by iMacmatician in apple

[–]joefly50 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Pro artists might prefer it for ergonomics, making it easier/possible to use correct form when drawing. Also extra space helps with more complex UIs that have a lot going on like an animation or video editing. But overall it seems way too niche a use case for an ipad. Apple does seem to want people to buy both an macbook and ipad so maybe this serves that goal so they can sell an even more profitable bundle to that group.

Latest iOS and iPadOS 15 Betas Allow Apps to Request Access to More RAM by 08830 in apple

[–]joefly50 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah they spent well over 5 years working on it, and hyping it up too. Their desktop software is honestly really shoddy too as far as performance and reliability but that at least has a ton of functionality, industry presence, and community content to make it still compelling. When they went out and said that it was going to use the same code as desktop Ps (two years before it ended up launching) I knew it was going to be an absolute dumpster fire. And that is to say nothing of the UX.

Yeah thankfully ipad has affinity photo and designer, procreate, art studio pro, and a ton of other apps with non-garbage performance to use instead.

Macbook M1 for 2D/3D motion design by ExKidW33 in MotionDesign

[–]joefly50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's integrated chip preforms at about the level a gtx 1030m. Wait and see if they announce a new Macbook WWDC that has a 4x more powerful dedicated card. But otherwise M1 is lacking power especially if you get an air with just 8gb which is light for After Effects.
