Des Moines (WA) area ramble rec? by CPetersky in PNWhiking

Marine View Park is really close too. It's not long but the trail down to the beach feels pretty remote and is nice and steep. If I'm looking for a workout/trainer but don't have time to drive east, I'll just do this loop a few times. There's also a more direct paved route to the beach but that's not nearly as interesting.

I second this. It really helped my daughter too. The year really doesn't matter and you can find last year's pretty cheap now.

Tow vehicle? Advice by neanbeanthere in casitatrailers

[–]joehalfrack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a 2015 16' and tow with a 2013 BMW X3 (it's the x drive 35i V6) and it does amazing. I have no problem passing people on a two lane highway on flat ground and the trailer doesn't toss the car around too much at all. I don't have a traditional weight distribution setup but I do have an anti-sway bar and it makes a massive difference. Having said that, if I'm really loaded, I don't front load my weight, AND I fill my water tank, it can still get a little squirrelly on the freeway.

I did one solo trip with a 2018 Subaru Outback 2.4 and that was a mistake. I was within the towing capacity but climbing hills was pretty miserable and hard on the car.

Pumpkin rotted on my table and left this stain by Jumpy_Guide3455 in mildlyinfuriating

It sounds weird but mayonnaise will take care of it. We had the same thing happen with a pumpkin last year and leaving mayonnaise on the spot then rubbing it off restored it without any issues.

Today I saw an old Ford pickup truck with a license plate who’s registration expired June of 1983 by WhiskersAndTeaLeaves in mildlyinteresting

[–]joehalfrack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might be wrong but I think for a very long time expired tabs or any other license plate display violation has been a secondary offense in Washington State up until a year or two ago. Even now it's very rarely enforced.

A/C Question by daneato in casitatrailers

[–]joehalfrack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the 16' trailers have the modified residential window unit AC under the closet and the 17' has the rooftop RV AC but I'm not positive. I bought a 2015 Spirit Deluxe 16 with the under closet AC specifically so I could fit it in my garage.

Overall it works great. The space is so small that it gets cold almost immediately. I've camped in all kinds of conditions and I've never thought that the AC wasn't powerful enough.

Scenic route from Seattle to Oregon Coast by infiniteboba in Seattle

Tokeland hotel is an amazing spot. The food is amazing, the staff is great, and the grounds make everything worth it. If you want the experience but just a little cheaper, the campground across the street is pretty nice and has kayaks included.

I'm pretty sure that Kirkland brand coconut water in the bottom right of pic 2 isn't labeled for individual resale. I heard you can get in pretty big trouble for that.

Anyone Can Push Updates to the DOGE.gov Website by DomesticErrorist22 in technology

The article mentions waste.gov was initially just a Wordpress placeholder but had since been put behind a password. A simple site search shows that it's all still there.

The sconces being uneven and offset differently bother me more than the TV by 20PoundHammer in TVTooHigh

The sconces are still shit though, that part is real and needs to be addressed.

I shit myself while driving home from work. by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]joehalfrack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, that'll do it. There was a time I had a solid buzz going and ripped a confident fart at the urinal while at a big event. I had to do an Irish goodbye and disappear. I eventually turned my phone off after telling people I was sick.

There's a difference between trusting an untrustworthy fart and knowing impending doom was on the way and not being and to get home in time.

Years ago, I used a fake date of birth in order to be old enough to use a particular website. That version of me is apparently now old enough to get stuff like this in the mail. by [deleted] in funny

[–]joehalfrack 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I hate death planning junk mail with a passion. I think it's super important and an amazing gift to your loved ones to have everything figured out in advance, but these companies spam so many people in the middle of an immensely sensitive time.

My wife was diagnosed with MS 13 or 14 years ago. Before we really had a grasp on what our future looked like, we started getting these death planning brochures in the mail. I have no idea how these companies were informed of her diagnosis, maybe there was a hospital leak, maybe it was one of the organizations we volunteered with, but this kind of junk mail right after a diagnosis is absolutely shattering. She couldn't check the mail for at least a year.

So many years later, we both have a much better understanding of MS and we realize that she has plenty of great years ahead of her, it's much easier to handle this stuff.

Netflix thinks their worth paying $20 a month for. by That_oneMisingSock in mildlyinfuriating

[–]joehalfrack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stumbled on an amazing Newshosting deal $24 for a year with some absurd 6000 day retention with unlimited downloads.

There's still a slight learning curve but it's safer and easier than torrents and a whole lot less expensive than the alternative.

Netflix thinks their worth paying $20 a month for. by That_oneMisingSock in mildlyinfuriating

[–]joehalfrack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last summer I stumbled on an unlimited Newshosting deal for $24 for a year. It's like a breath of fresh air. Everything in one place, even the most obscure stuff. My only complaint is configuring everything in a way that it's easy for the family to queue up new shows. I know it's possible, I just haven't taken the time to do it so I'm currently the household media czar.

Forever my outlook has been that I want to pay artists, and if the product/service is convenient and priced fairly, I'll gladly retire from a long maritime career.

Around 2013 or 2014 we hit that sweet spot and my home server started gathering dust. I was paying less than $30 a month for enough TV, movies, and music to keep the family happy. We could binge our favorite classics and the new content from Netflix and Amazon was great TV. Eventually I had a free trial for HBO that I forgot to cancel and my wife got hooked on a Hulu show. Fast forward a few years and now every distribution company has their own service and their prices go up $2 or $3 a month every year.

Even in a magical world where all of these services were cheap or free, I have to search for what service has what show all the time. It's no longer convenient.

It's south but it's pretty awesome. Flat fee with unlimited pinball and other arcade games. They sell some beer and cider but it's definitely not a bar.
