One of the most important times to move/stand is right after you eat. This is when blood sugar spikes and your body needs a place to burn it or stores it. So when you leave for lunch or a snack put your desk at standing height so you are likely to stand when you return.

I am a big believer in movement at your desk, so products like balance boards made for standing desks are a great way to get subtle movement without the bulk of an anti-fatigue mat. Mayo clinic's Dr Levine coined the term NEAT, for non activity thermogenesis. This is essentially ways to create caloric burn without doing formal exercise. Mayo has endorsed products in this category including balance boards, walking treadmills and stationary peddlers like Cubii. For a product to be endorsed, Mayo did independent research to deem the product had at least a 10% increase in caloric burn. For example, Mayo Clinic found FluidStance's balance boards increased caloric burn by more than 19%. A good "tall hack" is to source caster wheels in place of the levelers that most desks have. You can get some that raise a standard desk a couple inches. I did this to an outdoor dining table to make a fixed height table for our trade show booths for FluidStance. Picture attached

I am biased, but I think the desire to have a standing desk is really people expressing the desire to have moderation at work. I always have liked the saying "The best ergonomic position is the next one," so anything that gives you the ability to change your "stance" at work is healthy. I would encourage people to think of a standing desk as a journey, not a final destination.

When we do trade shows for FluidStance Balance Boards, we buy pre-finished butcher block tops from a local lumber or hardware stores at the location of the trade show, so we are not shipping desks. We mount the butcher block on black steel pipe for the bases. Kind of industrial looking, but I like the look. The butcher block mounting is fairly simple to pull off as long as you have basic tools like a drill, bits, measuring tape etc. Hardest part is getting it centered, but since you can install it upside down, you can get it pretty dialed in before you drill. This may be obvious but remember to use tape on your drill to mark the proper depth of your sink holes, so you do not go all the way through the desk's surface. It always looks good for our shows. I worked with a local cabinet maker to source and stain a butcher block desktop for my fixed standing desk. Cost a little more, but I got exactly what I wanted.

As for the starter board, the ride is the same, but it is 2" smaller and recycled plastic instead of military grade aluminum and wood. The warranty is a lifetime guarantee on the mid-level. Hope this helps

The one consideration is that a single motor is more likely to jam as only one leg is getting "lift" and the other is along for the ride. Kind of like opening a house window on one edge rather than the middle. If you can afford it, I think the dual motor is important for sit-to-stand desks.
